If you do a job you love, what do you do?

Just that really. On SAHM vs working mum threads on here I consistently see people talking about how much they love their jobs and I always wonder what they do. I'm on mat leave at the moment with my second baby and, as with my first, I can't say I miss work at all. I'm in a pretty senior role and seem to spend 90% of my time sitting through incredibly tedious meetings. I'm in my mid thirties and never really enjoyed working tbh, despite a range of sectors and different roles. Thinking of possibly rethinking my career after this baby and would love to hear what those who actually enjoy their jobs do.

I'm a marketing manager but with a speciality, in that I go into small companies that haven't had a marketing function for a while. Perhaps their previous marketing manager left or they've relied on external agencies to get them through.

I sort their social media, set up regular marketing campaigns, generate leads, clean & dedupe their data, create their reporting, manage a rebrand or a product launch, basically get it all working.

Then I hand over to someone else and move on.

@Meadowfinch - I’m looking for someone to do this! Where are you based??

ilovetomatoes · 01/11/2024 07:45

Cybersecurity. It’s so incredibly interesting and I love that I have to continuously learn to keep on top of the latest developments. Colleagues are great and I don’t work long hours.

Yourinmyspot · 01/11/2024 07:46

Lollipop lady, I do enjoy it.

That does indeed sound like a brilliant job and I'm a bit jealous. All the cuteness but less of the poo, sounds great!

I work at a small niche specialist learning company. It was just me and the founder for a bit, I went with him to start up when we left a bigger place. There’s a handful of us now - all wonderful people that enjoy I spending time with. What we offer is the best out there so it’s a joy to work with.

I have shaped my job to suit me over the years and now my DC are at uni and I have more headspace , I’ve created a role that covers my interests and adds value to the business. My boss is wonderful - supportive, flexible, appreciative and believes in my potential to create/ solve anything.

I'm a senior claims manager in a central government department. I love it as the work is super varied and interesting. I get to work with solicitors and barristers regularly in a wide range of cases. I also provide policy advice to ministers. Fell into it by chance but really pleased I did.

Sepoctnov · 01/11/2024 07:54

Senior role in the public sector.

Honestly after DC I just enjoy my salary and flexibility at work. All jobs become pretty tedious in the end.

I am an Occupational therapist. Been one for 35 years. Loved every position I have ever worked in. Mainly management now but spent a day on the wards this week and still love the patient contact and the ability to make a difference to people's lives at the most stressful times for them.

LunaTheCat · 01/11/2024 07:58

I am a GP. I have been in same practice 15 years.I love feeling part of community and making a difference.

Same here. Actually I really love my work (policy), but my department is completely toxic. I’ve been looking for another job for a year but have recently switched my mindset. I now do a 40 hour week and leave the rest until I return.

FrazzledHippy · 01/11/2024 08:02

I run a care home kitchen, I love it. I'd never go back to the restaurant industry now

coffeesaveslives · 01/11/2024 08:15

I run my own dog walking business.

nzeire · 01/11/2024 08:18

Goodness what a brainy and interesting lot you are!!!

I work on the front line(office) in a primary school and just LOVE it. So. Much. Drama!!!

HowManySunflowers · 01/11/2024 08:22

I'm a university lecturer - not research active, teaching only. I used to work in financial consulting before having DC. I enjoyed both jobs, my current one is paid a lot less but is less stressful.

MrsE · 01/11/2024 08:23

Head of VAT for an American company. Done VAT for 30+ years in various guises. Absolutely love it as it has given me the opportunity to travel the world, meet amazing people and be involved with some fantastic brands

FinallyHere · 01/11/2024 08:27

Project Manager in a large international corporate. Never had the same project twice, get to work with a varied group of really brilliant people, trusted to get on with it and supported when I need it.

Joke that I'd pay to do this. Not joking.

PaperRing · 01/11/2024 08:32

I'm a secondary school teacher (Maths) and head of department. I can't imagine ever not teaching- despite all the usual grumbles it is the best job in the world.

I'm.a speech therapist and I do love my job but it's still a job with all the associated crapola and I've still got a chart on the wall of 'months until retirement' Grin. It is true though that I'm pretty happy staying at a lower clinical level because there aren't many meetings and the ones we have are there to improve care.

Me too!
I've been working as a SLT for 25 years and I still love my job.
I've moved into working for a social enterprise and it's a great work-life balance.

MadamDicey · 01/11/2024 08:35

I'm a massage and somatic therapist. I have a small studio where clients come and spend a few hrs on a weekly/monthly basis, and we work on healing body and mind with different therapies.
Couldn't imagine doing anything else. I have been qualified for 20 years now, and I love the fact that I can keep learning new things

borntobequiet · 01/11/2024 08:37

I teach. I retired from secondary at 60, worked part time in FE for eight years and have now worked in HE for three. I still miss the buzz, challenges and fun of the secondary classroom, but I wouldn’t be up to it, physically or emotionally, now.

mummabubs · 01/11/2024 08:40

Another Clinical Psychologist here, although I work in neuropsychology as opposed to mental health. Definitely a challenging job, but also really rewarding and there's nothing else I'd rather do.

Can you tell me a bit more about this (happy to dm!) as as this sounds really interesting.

I work with males who have served a Custodial sentence, or on Probation, and are in the community. Our focus is family and relationships but under the umbrella of emotional wellbeing, We deliver interventions or provide a listening ear, whichever feels more appropriate (or a bit of both). Our support is part of their rehabilitation.

I have worked with murderers, sex offenders, perpetrators of domestic violence and many more.

It’s THE best job I could ever wish for!

Notellinganyone · 01/11/2024 09:00

English Teacher in secondary school. In my 30th year. Absolutely love it. My department are brilliant and there is a strong sense of community in the school. It’s tiring but never boring.
