If you do a job you love, what do you do?

Just that really. On SAHM vs working mum threads on here I consistently see people talking about how much they love their jobs and I always wonder what they do. I'm on mat leave at the moment with my second baby and, as with my first, I can't say I miss work at all. I'm in a pretty senior role and seem to spend 90% of my time sitting through incredibly tedious meetings. I'm in my mid thirties and never really enjoyed working tbh, despite a range of sectors and different roles. Thinking of possibly rethinking my career after this baby and would love to hear what those who actually enjoy their jobs do.

Software developer. If people ask me what I like about my job I always say “I get payed to do Sudokus all day😉”

LionWings · 01/11/2024 09:30

I'm a systems administrator for a learning management system. It's an organisation with really interesting leaning content, and is a great mix of day to day stuff, bigger projects, working with/helping people and system management. Always busy and every day is varied. There are definitely some tedious bits but overall I love it.

Fadedchintz · 01/11/2024 09:33

I'm a counsellor

Penelope1703 · 01/11/2024 09:33

I'm a GP and I love it

I work with males who have served a Custodial sentence, or on Probation, and are in the community. Our focus is family and relationships but under the umbrella of emotional wellbeing, We deliver interventions or provide a listening ear, whichever feels more appropriate (or a bit of both). Our support is part of their rehabilitation.

I have worked with murderers, sex offenders, perpetrators of domestic violence and many more.

It’s THE best job I could ever wish for!

That sounds amazing.

outdooryone · 01/11/2024 09:40

I have done very few jobs I was not happy with.
I have had a career in outdoor education and teaching, and now am senior manager in a wonderful national charity with a wonderful team of people doing some blummin' brilliant things.

NonStopMoaning · 01/11/2024 09:44

I work with data and I just love it, it's my passion. Plus a great team of people and a lovely boss.

Itsalwaysfools · 01/11/2024 09:44

Housekeeper. I used to be part of the leadership team in a huge global business, which I loved but my ambition just deserted me overnight after many years of scaling the career ladder. Had a total career change, drifted into cleaning, discovered I was very good at it and am very much in demand. I keep a small client list and cherry pick who I work for. I have a huge amount of variety in my role and am trusted to just get on with it. It has its tedious moments and having no colleagues is both a blessing and a curse but all jobs have their down sides and I get genuine satisfaction from doing a good job and helping to keep the show on the road for the very busy (very wealthy!) people I work for!

I'm a stage manager. I love it, but the pay is shit.

Letsgotitans · 01/11/2024 09:58

Speech and language therapist but I'm self employed, don't think I'd enjoy working for the NHS. And also part time so that helps!

Bifflepants · 01/11/2024 10:03

I'm a specialist speech language therapist working with children and adults who need to use AAC (alternative communication). I love every minute of it.

eish · 01/11/2024 10:06

Primary Teacher (KS2). It is not for everyone but I love helping the children I teach flourish.

GC5 · 01/11/2024 10:09

Human rights solicitor. It’s very badly paid but the work is intellectually stimulating, I love working with and interacting with clients, and no feeling in the world beats getting justice for a client who has been failed by the state.

I just retrained in a new career and spent 10 weeks doing on-the-job training building a seaplane and I absolutely loved it so I got a job there and start on Monday and seriously cannot wait, I've been missing it the last 3 weeks while I've been finishing my schooling.

user1471556818 · 01/11/2024 10:32

Retired nurse and overall yep I really enjoyed my job.Yeah some absolute crap cos of poor manager but I do look back and think I did make a difference to a lot of people and it was different every shift , never boring .

Zippidydoodah · 01/11/2024 10:34

I’m a portage home visitor for children with SEND. No two days are the same, and the difference my team and I make is huge.

I haven’t counted or anything, but I feel that many of the posts on here of people who love their jobs are people who make a difference to others. That’s always been my mindset and ethos. I want to help other people, and selfishly, get an enormous amount of job satisfaction from it.

Executive Assistant for a high profile person.

Love it, but definitely not 9-5, which I don't mind at all as the job is so interesting.

Igmum · 01/11/2024 10:51

Academic - professor in a RG university. I love it. I love the variety, the colleagues, teaching and research. I even enjoy admin though hate being in jobs where this utterly takes over my life. Emails can be overwhelming but in general this is the best job in the world (would be better if there were a bit less of it).

I've been an EA and it was beyond awful 🤣

Wow what do you do now?! I'd be shit at anything that involved building, I can't even do my 6 year old's lego 🤣

I trained as an aircraft mechanic, originally intending to go into line maintenance but I got a job at a company that is building a prototype seaplane so I'm doing the mechanic work and learning the building side of things too. Its fascinating to me, and I love doing hands-on work and seeing the results of what I do, gives me a real sense of accomplishment.

MessyNeate · 01/11/2024 12:42

Also a nurse. Neonatal intensive care. I'm part time though which helps with the work life balance. I hate the politics of it. But taking care of parents tiny baby's is such a privilege

Miley1967 · 01/11/2024 12:46

I can't say I love my job all the time but some days I really do. I am a benefits advisor and there is nothing more satisfying than helping people who are really struggling to get the help they need. I have had two such cases this week where people were really desperate and I have helped them to navigate the system and get help. The downside is that we also get a lot of people quite frankly taking the pee and trying to pull the wool over our eyes and that just makes me want to have a change of career !

Skibadeedoo · 01/11/2024 12:49

I work with young elite athletes. It’s awesome.

ManchesterLu · 01/11/2024 12:50

I have a YouTube/TikTok/Instagram for my art work, so I spend all my time doing art, and then uploading the videos/photos of me doing it. It is amazing. It takes a long time to build up, but the bigger channels can make thousands a week (and I'm not a big channel yet, by the way, but the earnings are still decent!)
