If you are someone who drives down a slip road towards a busy dual carriageway with no intention of stopping ….

Where do you think the cars are going to go if they is no space to go into the outside lane?

There is a really bad junction I’m currently dealing with every day. He cars come down the slip road in convoy. No ability for me to slot inbetween and they show absolutely no sign of slowing down to wait to join the trunk road. If I have a car on my right, where do these people think I’m going to avoid a collision?

I may be misunderstanding but in these situations it should be zipper merging. If you’re in the left lane and can’t move to the right, you adjust your speed to let a car in, as does the car behind, etc. The slip road shouldn’t have to stop to join a busy road.

SirChenjins · 30/10/2024 14:53

Oh watching with interest...I see so many drivers do this, and then they have the cheek to get angry when the person already on the dual carriageway or motorway doesn't immediately stamp on the brakes to let them in. I believe braking is exactly what they expect the other driver to do though.

Timeforabiscuit · 30/10/2024 14:54

Is the convoy an official one i.e. army? Or a regular route for funerals?

If it's a regular local problem I'd ask on the local community Facebook pages to see what the local "rules" are.

This. Adjust your speed and distance to make room for a car to merge in front of you.

If I am aware of a junction like this I move into the right hand lane well in advance.

SweetSakura · 30/10/2024 14:55

Surely you should be moving into the outside lane? That's what I do? Or adjusting to let people filter in between?

No, the person joining adjusts their speed upwards or downwards to join without causing the person on the motorway to have to brake. Drivers on the motorway have priority - Highway Code 259. If you know the road and can move over into the right lane in time then great, but drivers joining shouldn't expect this - but many do apparently.

TorroFerney · 30/10/2024 15:01

Pull out in advance, that’s what driving is all about surely anticipation. Or as others have said if it’s really busy then slow down and merge in turn.

Theonlywayisuptoyou · 30/10/2024 15:03

Look there’s “should have, would have, could have” ideas of what’s right and wrong then there’s the pragmatic approach. If you are facing this every day just move lanes ahead of the slip road junction and don’t let it impact on your day.

Coconutter24 · 30/10/2024 15:04

So where do you go or do they stop?

Just one car after another. Say a group of four cars coming down the slip with no real tangible gap inbetween.

This time I managed to accelerate hard and get infront of the first car.

It is very dangerous to stop. You must merge and the approaching traffic needs to adjust their speed to accommodate their merge

But it doesn't - the speed adjustment should come from the driver merging.

MistyMountainTop · 30/10/2024 15:06

I once got flashed at by the police and messaged to move back over (one of those digital in car message boards) when I moved in anticipation to let traffic join from a slip road 🤷‍♀️

SensibleSigma · 30/10/2024 15:06

It’s new, apparently. As in, I was taught that the cars joining must match and merge. Now they are taught the cars already on must make space.

It would really help if they publicise changes to what new drivers are taught.

SensibleSigma · 30/10/2024 15:07

And was taught not to pull out out to make space (but do anyway).

Honestly I've never really experienced this because if I see cars on a slip road then I'm already adjusting my speed and distance to car in front to allow them to merge in if the right hand lane is totally full. If you are doggedly sticking to 70 and causing a car to come to a full stop on a slip road, then that's just as dangerous. Slip roads are so they can join the road at an appropriate speed.

uhOhOP · 30/10/2024 15:08

If you can't move over to allow a car to join the road, you slow down. What is the alternative? That they slow down and end up joining the road at a speed lower than the traffic they are merging with?

What if they slow down to allow you to pass and then the cars behind you also don't let them in? Should they just run out of slip road and stop at the end...?

Editing to add that I think the first option is for the cars on the road to move over, the second option is for the cars on the slip road to adjust their speed accordingly if they can see the cars don't have the option to move over, and the final option is that the cars on the road should slow down to actively allow the cars on the slip road to merge.

Ozanj · 30/10/2024 15:08

You should be moving to the right hand lane well before that junction. If you’ve failed to plan then of course you need to slow down so the cars can merge. Stopping on a slip road is dangerous.
