I couldn't find a thread on today's budget. Anyone watching live?

New office for value for money? How much is that going to cost?

I’ve just been reading Dickens. Reminds me of the Office of circumlocution!

Covid Corruption Commissioner! They're coming for you Rishi

Yes. And minimum wage increase

Looking at you Baroness Malone. Hopefully some corrupt people will be prosecuted and some money recovered.

LadyofRutshire · 30/10/2024 12:58

£240 million to get people back into work. So far all she has said is setting up a lot of new (old) things that are costing a lot.

Cutting tax avoidance is rhetoric. The places they target just aren’t where the money is seeping out but it looks better to go after big business.

and HMRC are just not capable - they need an overhaul and streamlining

BellyPork · 30/10/2024 12:58

Good news with the increase in carers allowance

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 30/10/2024 12:58

Brilliant news re carer's allowance.

the80sweregreat · 30/10/2024 12:59

I won't hold my breath that Michelle Mone will pay back even half of the 60 million she ( reportedly ) was given.
Be very surprised if she does

JudyKing · 30/10/2024 12:59

From the BBC:

’’Rachel Reeves instantly said that “any chancellor standing here today” would have to do the same if they wanted to be “responsible” and “rebuild public services”.

Such a twat thing to say IMO. Basically still trying to say how amazing they are and that the Conservatives are shit and would have done this anyway. Easy to say when you’re in power 🙄

Direct access to bank accounts!!! Slippery slope

Just what I was thinking

CaveMum · 30/10/2024 12:59

Wish they wouldn't refer to each other as "the member for x" - most of us have no bloody clue who they mean! Just use their blinking name!

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 30/10/2024 12:59

Thumbs up to a review of the various overpayment processes also.

Shangrilalala · 30/10/2024 13:00

The braying aside, she is a desperate speaker. So disappointing.

A criminal charge would be preferable.

You couldn’t be more wrong about HMRC. Cutbacks over 20 years has left them unable to do the job properly. Don’t need more streamlining. Need the opposite.

Load of baloney so far, just laying the groundwork so she can be excused for fleecing us.

Exactly my feelings.

Sorry I didn’t mean cutting staff but they are like 3 organisations on one that don’t seem capable of talking to each other. If they actually talked to each other they would become a lot more efficient and their staff could actually focus on the important things

Phineyj · 30/10/2024 13:02

I must be watching a different broadcast as I'm finding her delivery quite clear and a good pace.

The MPs are putting me strongly in mind of my largest year 12 Economics class though! Honestly.

SallyForf · 30/10/2024 13:02

here we go...

I think her delivery is fine but the important thing is the message, surely?

So far, so expected.

SallyForf · 30/10/2024 13:03

Fuel duty not increased.

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 30/10/2024 13:03

Freezing fuel duty surprises me tbh

Lifelover16 · 30/10/2024 13:03

No increase on fuel duties!

SallyForf · 30/10/2024 13:04

Now for NICs...

Jowak1 · 30/10/2024 13:04

It's like a chimps tea party 🎉 😂
