I couldn't find a thread on today's budget. Anyone watching live?

Thanks for the people who said its still free of Inheirtance tax HOWEVER the devil will be in the detail. Pension pots have always been looked at seperately. They were attractive because you could leave your pot to your children for example and they wouldnt pay any tax. That ability has now gone.

You needed to pass away before 75 years old for this to be allowed. That is clearly not controlled by anyone.

It was attractive and a way to pass on considerable amounts of money to others as opposed to your spouse. I know my DH wont live to 75. My Financial Advisor said to watch out for this one..

So it might not be as clear cut as others have said.

I'm just glad MIL's probate was approved yesterday and we won't be affected by this. She left us a lot in her pensions.

The business about farms is going to be interesting and potentially going to change land ownership in the countryside a lot. I'm going to be curious to see more details.

Selfish ask (not been able to watch) has FE been mentioned? I know olthat over 150 colleges collectively asked for ££ to try to match thr school teachers pay rise

Yes, further education was directly mentioned. I'll edit in the figure they said if I can find it!

Edit: £300 million

well many vet practices in the uk are being investigated watched a documentary how many charge far to much. Fees are very high that’s why I use animal trust they don’t charge consultation fees and yet still must make enough to run as a business

And yet, you implied these qualified staff would be made unemployed and disposed of by your business owning husband?

Perhaps he could take a reduced profit.

Showing her utter lack of class by constant cheap jibes against Sunak and Hunt.

They all do it, every budget. Hunt and Sunak were as bad when they were Chancellors.

I know there are aspects to the budget that worry people and I don't want to diminish those worries. But, for me, it was a well balanced budget that was nowhere near as harsh for 'normal' people as I thought it might be. And I thought it was delivered well.

If by normal people you mean a working person on averge income then you are very likely to be worse off by around £1k a year. I agree, it could have been worse!

Barney16 · 30/10/2024 13:53

I hope the NHS plan works. I missed the bit, if there was a section on social care. Fixing social care is really important for the NHS and no government has been able to tackle it effectively. Understandably because it's a very knotty problem.

How do you work this out?

crumblingschools · 30/10/2024 13:53

@NorthernGirlie £300m for further education.

Poffy · 30/10/2024 13:54

Not sure how I feel about making the point about being a female chancellor.
It smacks of look at me, a little woman doing difficult man work.

I'm pretty happy overall.
Ending the freeze on tax allowances in 2 years time will still mean lots of moderately paid people pay 40% tax meanwhile.
We'll lose out of the inherited pension pots thing. It's a fairly painless way to raise taxes.
I missed the bit about RTB? A huge mistake if they open that up further without making it mandatory to replace and increase social housing.

FriendOrNo · 30/10/2024 13:54

I will not be happy with any budget until public sector employees are treated the same as other employees, ie scrap the defined benefit pensions...I object to being taxed more to provide a gilded pension for public sector whilst also being taxed more for receiving a crappier pension

BellyPork · 30/10/2024 13:55

Really Rishi? You had your chance and you blew it.

Apparently he doesn't make any profit. Once he's paid everyone including himself there's nothing left. Unless I'm missing something.

Windchimesandsong · 30/10/2024 13:55

Poffy · 30/10/2024 13:47

This is to recover money from fraudsters.

The likes of Michelle Mone? She doesn't receive benefits though.

I also assume that MPs will have their bank accounts accessed - to prevent & recover money from expenses fraud.

Separately though, I'll give them a kudos for cutting RTB - although I agree with a pp that it should be scrapped completely. There's a serious affordable housing crisis (not helped by the fact that 40% of former RTBs are now expensive private rentals).

Re IHT. The fairest option would be to tax it on the income/wealth of the beneficiaries. And special exemptions for farms. Concerning if farms end up in ownership of just a few very large organisations.

AllstarFacilier · 30/10/2024 13:56

Aren’t they all so annoying. One side does something and the other side jumps in to say it’s crap. Would be nicer to see them say they’re all in it together to serve the public rather than it being tit for tat between them all.

NorthernGirlie · 30/10/2024 13:56

crumblingschools · 30/10/2024 13:53

Thank you - doubtful we'll get a decent payrise. Staff are leaving in droves at the minute

Wonder who will staff these diagnostic centres. Nursing applicants down 40%.

Well hopefully the rises in nurse wages agreed will attract more applicants. And it’s not necessarily nurses who staff these places. It’s clerical staff, radiographers etc.

mydaughterisademon · 30/10/2024 13:56

No mention of the first time buyer stamp duty!

crumblingschools · 30/10/2024 13:56

The increase in SEN funding is welcome but doesn't come anywhere near what is required

timetodecide2345 · 30/10/2024 13:56

He's pitching his speech at daily mail readers.

JosieRay · 30/10/2024 13:57

Think he made that up!!!

ilovesooty · 30/10/2024 13:57

This Deputy Speaker isn't very authoritative

Agree.

Webbb · 30/10/2024 13:57

I think RR did a great job of being the first female chancellor, up against that room full of braying men.

Figgygal · 30/10/2024 13:57

I hate all this braying and yelling it's ghastly behaviour and undermines the seriousness of what's being discussed.

Rishi just said it had gone up, but u hadn’t heard it either
