What to eat after food poisoning?

buffyspikefaith · 28/10/2024 12:26

I'm not hungry but I've lost 16lbs and haven't really eaten in a week

Managed half a pack of plain hula hoops, a rusk and I can suck on chewy sweets. Been drinking full sugar coke and rehydration drinks
Not sure what to go for next. Avoiding dairy and anything acidic maybe?
The antibiotics have left an awful mouth taste hence the sweets!

Dry toast? That's always my go-to. With a cup of tea. Or a dry biscuit (digestives/rich tea/malted milk) and cup of tea.

dementedpixie · 28/10/2024 12:30

Anything carby and not too greasy or spicy
Toast, pasta, noodles, potatoes, rice, soup, etc

GiddyRobin · 28/10/2024 12:36

Definitely dry toast. Can you/anyone you know make you a broth? DH makes this thing when we've had upset stomachs:

Water from boiled veg, veg removed.
Fries onion, celery, carrot, ginger. Tomatoes.
Adds the stock and some paprika and the smallest bit of turmeric.
He also adds nutritional yeast but you don't need to.
Lets it all bubble until it tastes nice, strains it and then serves the broth in cups.

It's a faff but it's so easy to drink and really soothing.

Outside of that, how are you with porridge or even Ready Brek? Or maybe even a Cup-A-Soup? You could strain any of the bits out. Knorr packet spring veg is also good. I know they're probably not the healthiest but sod it, it's food and it'll be gentle on your stomach.

White rice, white fish, chicken, and mashed potato are all good.

Lyannaa · 28/10/2024 12:41

Poor you - I had food poisoning once and I was ill for about 10 days. It was awful and I felt absolutely weak.

Flat coke is good. And refined carbs like white toast. Chicken soup, maybe?

T4phage · 28/10/2024 12:47

I always eat full sugar jelly pots when I'm like this because it gives you some energy, is gentle on the digestive system and it rehydrates you as well.

Wtfdude · 28/10/2024 12:49

Banana, apples - good easy fibre
White rice, potatoes
Simple easy proteins as pps said
Easy on seasoning

Bone broth. Magic in a cup/bowl

TTPDTS · 28/10/2024 12:51

I use the BRAT - bananas, plain cooked rice, applesauce and toast. Never failed me yet!

Radiatorvalves · 28/10/2024 12:54

Bananas were recommended to me after some hideous puking when pregnant. Think it was food poisoning not morning sickness.

buffyspikefaith · 28/10/2024 13:00

I have bananas, marigold bouillon, microwave plain rice, apples, pitta bread, eggs

They suspect chicken as it was campylobacter so I'm not touching any meat for a while!

No bread. I did a big shop just beforehand and everything went out of date Angry

Mishmashs · 28/10/2024 13:03

The BRAT diet as someone unthread mentioned. I like sprite and plainish biscuits like rich teas.

I'd make a cup of weak bouillon and a bowl of some plain rice with a little bit of butter in there. Maybe avoid the eggs for now, they can go either way after an upset stomach. Possibly a pitta bread on the side if just scooping up rice gets a bit boring to eat?

JellyComb · 28/10/2024 13:08

Urgh I had campylobacter a few years ago, from poor chopping board hygiene when cooking chicken. My own fault.

I feel for you. My poo did not go back to normal for almost 4 weeks after. I was so weak and dizzy. I followed the BRAT diet and basically ate a lot of toast.

AdoraBell · 28/10/2024 13:10

I second what GiddyRobin said, also for the bad taste I would use mints, Polo or mint imperials etc, as well as the sweets.

Hope you feel better soon.

It started last sat with a temp so I thought it was flu then the diarrhoea on Monday
I worked Wednesday and Thursday (no idea how) and gave up on Friday and ended up in a&e

I think people often say food poisoning for a bit of an upset stomach but this has been wild

Mint imperials are a great shout - when my dad was poorly the nurses kept bringing them to him.

Also, don't worry if you can't finish it. Even if you just manage a few mouthfuls and a few sips of the bouillon, doesn't matter. Just remind your stomach that it needs food in there, let it wake up a bit.

It's really shitty, absolutely nothing worse. Hope it starts to pass for you soon, OP.

SummerInSun · 28/10/2024 13:15

Dry cornflakes or dry rice krisppies are my go to.

buffyspikefaith · 28/10/2024 13:17

Thankfully the upset stomach seems to have stopped for now although I still have cramps and growling plus a banging headache

I took today off work but feel like I should be back tomorrow as I WFH

I was always taught that after any stomach upset stick to clear liquids and BRAT Foods
B=banana
R=rice
A=apple sauce (or any cooked apple)
T=toast

I tend to start with plain rice cooked in a little chicken consomme (clear soup)
If I (or the patient if not me) can digest that without getting ill again I will try the other items one by one. Don't try any non BRAT foods until 48hrs on BRAT with no illness.

dementedpixie · 28/10/2024 13:18

Scrambled egg and some toasted pitta bread maybe

MidnightPatrol · 28/10/2024 13:18

I’d also probably take some rehydration salts.

You can buy these in the supermarket.

dementedpixie · 28/10/2024 13:19

There no need to limit to BRAT.

shellyleppard · 28/10/2024 13:21

Dry toast and water. If that stays down after a few hours more dry toast and.....a cup of tea!! Sending sympathy it's horrible to be ill

I'd wait the extra day if I were you. WFH is still work and if your head is banging and you're feeling weak (and cramps are hideous, I really feel for you), even just an extra day to rest will be good for you. If you can manage a bit of food today and tomorrow you might feel a bit stronger come Wednesday so concentrating won't be as harsh.

Cups of tea have been ok, I would have to be unconscious not to drink tea and even then I would somehow demand it IV
Been having sugar in it which I don't normally do
