What to eat after food poisoning?

buffyspikefaith · 28/10/2024 12:26

I'm not hungry but I've lost 16lbs and haven't really eaten in a week

Managed half a pack of plain hula hoops, a rusk and I can suck on chewy sweets. Been drinking full sugar coke and rehydration drinks
Not sure what to go for next. Avoiding dairy and anything acidic maybe?
The antibiotics have left an awful mouth taste hence the sweets!

I've had it op. Awful.
Once well enough I went to the shop and looked for what I fancied. I remember getting some ready meals to avoid cooking due to fatigue

Mynewnameis · 28/10/2024 13:25

And don't go back to work!

shellyleppard · 28/10/2024 13:26

Op your body is probably trying to recover after the illness. Could you manage scrambled or poached eggs??? Get some nutrients back in the system??

I'd make a broth with some veg stock and potatoes in. Maybe some carrot/ leek/ onion if I was feeling adventurous. Or noodles instead of the potato.
A very kindly Indonesian lady made me similar when I'd had a terrible stomach bug when travelling 20 years ago, and I still remember it fondly!

I would be careful with bullion. They can be quite salty and nkt gut healthy. If you do food order, get some actual broth (not full of Es). It's protein bomb and very good for belly.
You can make yours easily too.

After that when you can, get probiotics into diet

Amazing! So glad you actually enjoyed it, too, sometimes it can be a bloody drag! Let's hope that's you on the mend going forward - you'll be scoffing all the good stuff again before you know it.

Pasta with olive oil and pepper was always my first meal after toast, crackers and biscuits. Chicken broth with little pastas in also fab. It literally cures all ills.

wavingfuriously · 28/10/2024 15:19

Got the same or bacterial infection going on...eaten bananas, v weak tea, water...that's about it!

wavingfuriously · 28/10/2024 15:26

my bottom hurts from all the activity, my ears ache from any noise, stomach pains, headache in case anyone got it!

I had a temp of 40c for a couple of days then horrendous diarrhoea which just didn't stop for 6 days, headache and felt sick but no vomiting

Sounds horrible. I'm glad you enjoyed your meal. sometimes after being ill, basic stuff tastes like manna from heaven.

GidgetGirl · 28/10/2024 15:38

My partner had a campylobacter infection last year, sounds very similar. It sounds grim!

Anyway I second miso soup - my partner got through loads of this after his bout. It's full of nutrients and will help replace all the good bacteria in your gut which you have no doubt lost. It can also be tarted up with protein (egg works really well), rice noodles and whatever veg and extra flavouring you like when you're ready.

murasaki · 28/10/2024 15:43

I stick a handful of baby spinach in the mug with the itsu sachet, it wilts well.

Doing an online Sainsbury's order now

You're all more helpful than my dad who suggested chicken soup and nearly got puked on

Tofu is a nice exchange for chicken if you don't mind it, too. Works lovely in miso soup if you get the firm silken one, and if you're not fancying eggs you can also "scramble" it with a little bit of turmeric!

DeanElderberry · 28/10/2024 16:15

Dry toast, flat seven up, rice pudding, cooking apples 'stewed' in the microwave - peel, chop, zap for a few minutes in the bowl you'll eat them from.

When you're a little better, canned tomato soup. Better again, scrambled eggs.

Then get some blue cheese, preferably several sorts, put them on a plate together in the fridge, and eat a tiny piece of each three times a day to help reinstate your gut flora.

Sheknowsaboutme · 28/10/2024 16:16

Oh mash! Simple mash with some salted butter

GiddyRobin · 28/10/2024 16:18

Also, have you tried kombucha? I've got an awful belly from coeliac, and if I ever accidentally get glutened then this really helps. I prefer the ones in the glass bottles, it's got some yucky looking stuff in called a "scoby", but I genuinely feel like it helps me recover.

Not entirely sure of the truth of it, maybe it's a placebo effect, but even if not they're really tasty.

DeanElderberry · 28/10/2024 16:19

And to rehydrate, a pint of boiled, cooled, water, a teaspoonful of sugar, or glucose if you can get it, a qusrter teaspoonful of salt, and the juice of an orange (for the potassium). Sip tiny quantities frequently - it should relieve the dehydration headache.

When you're a bit better, zap a banana in milk (enough to bring the quantity up to a pint) with a stick blender - again, for the potassium.

Goatblu · 28/10/2024 16:29

White rice and arrowroot biscuits.

wavingfuriously · 28/10/2024 17:11

Just ate some scrambled eggs w limited milk and butter. Came out the other end 2 hours later..🙄💣🗯🛀 give up!

DeanElderberry · 28/10/2024 17:18

If it's all at that end maybe taking Imodium or something similar for a couple of days would be a good idea. Ask your pharmacist in case there's some reason not to, and don't take them longer than absolutely necessary or you could get bunged up instead. And the blue cheese.
