What to eat after food poisoning?

buffyspikefaith · 28/10/2024 12:26

I'm not hungry but I've lost 16lbs and haven't really eaten in a week

Managed half a pack of plain hula hoops, a rusk and I can suck on chewy sweets. Been drinking full sugar coke and rehydration drinks
Not sure what to go for next. Avoiding dairy and anything acidic maybe?
The antibiotics have left an awful mouth taste hence the sweets!

Makes sense!

My food shop arrived so I have
TUC biscuits
Jelly
Itsu broth
Sourdough for toast
Jelly sweets
Plain mash
Carrot and swede mash
Ham for a plain sandwich
Plain rice
Some tarka dal pouches which I've had before and were really nice

That should do me until I feel more like eating my normal food minus any chicken whatsoever

The carrot and swede mash will be lovely. I remember getting a bowl of that one Christmas Day when I'd had a stomach bug. Curled on the couch, that with a dollop of butter on top. Ambrosia.

Yeah I'm not eating chicken! That's what I got food poisoning from

In my experience it can take decades before the body stops saying a loud 'NO' to the brain when presented with a food that caused (or is just suspected of having caused) serious illness. Presumably a survival mechanism hard-wired into us when our remote ancestors were learning which foods were safe to eat and which were not.

I couldn't eat egg salad sandwiches or cheesecake for at least 20 years after I got 'flu shortly after meeting two friends for lunch back in the mid 80s. I knew perfectly well the 'flu was a virus unrelated to the food, that didn't matter.

BRAT - bananas, rice, apples, toast.

TheNoonBell · 30/10/2024 09:05

Plain pasta, maybe a bit of olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper to taste.

sounds like you're improving but aren't those tarla dal pouches full of spices?!

buffyspikefaith · 30/10/2024 12:48

They're quite mild and I've eaten them before so more for next week onwards (they're long life so handy to have in)

I've not tried the broth yet, still on plain rice

👍 be warned those ready mash sides can contain dairy even cream used as cheap filler. tried idaho mash from sachet yest and it must've had dried milk powder in it..awful reaction !🛀

If anyone is still out there..I'm still suffering 😔 this really is a long haul thing. Phoned GP yesterday and she said it can last 2 weeks! still can't eat properly although this morning had my first hot cup of tea☕️ which tasted great!
need a butler, cook and bottle-washer at times like these😄

If anyone interested GP said half apple juice & half water is ideal drink👍

JellyComb · 05/11/2024 15:10

Ahhh i sympathise so much @wavingfuriously Like i said upthread it took me 3 or 4 weeks for my stomach to feel kind of normal after Champylobacter. My poo was runny or weeks. You'll get there. Lots of toast and bananas!!

I've been given the bottle, got to take it to doctors b4 midday tomo. think they hesitate to prescribe antibiotics now. so will have to wait till Monday 🙄

Your illness can't have been food poisoning rather a bacterial infection ?🤔

buffyspikefaith · 07/11/2024 18:41

@wavingfuriously no it was swabbed and confirmed campylobacter food poisoning
It can be treated with clarithromycin which they did as I'm immunocompromised
