How do you do it?

Just say you’d love to see her another time, and you appreciate the invitation, but it’s been a busy year, and this year you’re planning to celebrate Christmas alone together.

Since it started being a mad festival of obligation towards insensitive social bludgeoners

Nothing makes me happier than getting lots of invitations to fun things over Christmas, I’d feel a bit disappointed not having lots of plans and social engagements.

I also understand that other people don’t feel the same and think it’s absolutely fine for OP to be honest and say they fancy a quiet one. No one should feel like they have to lie - if someone is put out at someone else’s honesty, that’s on them.

Just say thanks for the invite, we really loved the stress of not having to travel and just having a quiet one so decided we are going to stick to this going forward.
