Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

To be honest I find the vast majority of dogs behave much better in shops, restaurants and cafes than most of the entitled brats that pass for children these days.

Totally agree 👍.

Yesterday I went to a pharmacy for a Covid jab. It's a large place with an area set aside for vaccinations, 2 consulting rooms, clinical room, etc. Five of us sitting side by side in the waiting area including a woman with a large dog.

Totally inappropriate in a clinical setting.

I seriously admire the dedication dog owners require. As far as I can tell a dog literally controls an owners life. This plus the general expense & the fact they must pick up dog poo often twice a day & worse if they have the runs. Holidays abroad are only achievable if there is a dog sitter & even then people are reluctant to leave them. To my mind they are far harder work than children. There again I've never owned a dog apart from in childhood when my parents had to give away a dog after trying for a year. It would eat every shoe in the house.I did love it though so I understand the feeling. My assumptions as an adult are purely based on what I perceive to be true hence I have no desire to own a dog now or in the future.

Yes dogs require looking after and can be hard work, however, all of that pales into insignificance when measured against the sheer joy and pleasure they bring.
I have no doubt numerous people will disagree but I feel sorry for them. I wish humans had hearts as big as dogs, the world would be a much nicer place if they did.

It is so, so simple l have a dog and I visit dog friendly cafes with him. There are numerous non dog friendly cafes where we can't go. If you don't like dogs go to the cafes which aren't dog friendly (and there are plenty of them). It really is this simple.

Exactly. They just like moaning about it. Dog haters just like to froth!

So which train should I get if I am allergic to dogs?

(And "froth"- really? This is a discussion board. Stop trying to wind people up).

The one without a dog on?

No where is completely dog free anyway. It's the law.

As others have pointed out, if only service dogs are allowed you are unlikely to find yourself in close contact with a dog. If all dogs are allowed, it makes it difficult for allergy-sufferers to use public transport. You cannot specify that you do not want to be next to a dog when you book a train. My son is allergic to cats and dogs and if he were on a long train journey with one next to him, it would cause serious problems. So what is the answer?

I would move if asked.

I am disabled, don't drive and rely on public transport when my dp can't take me. Sometimes I have my dog with me. What would you say I should do? Not go on planned journeys? A service dog could have been on a train or a bus minutes before your DS got on

Freemanhardyandwillis · 29/10/2024 17:59

I agree that service dogs should be allowed of course. But there are now so many dogs that it can be difficult to avoid them. Public services have to work for everyone, not just dog owners.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 29/10/2024 17:59

And not everyone would move if asked! Especially if the seats are reserved for a long journey.

Then what are you doing on Mumsnet?
Next you'll be claiming that your au pair has to clean her own alloy wheels...

😂😂😂

You need to give your head a wobble.

Firstly humans belong to animals Kingdom. We are primates but also mammals.

Secondly, we are the only stupid species on this planet who actually pay to be able to live. No other species pay rent, food or bills.

Thirdly, please ban your children and yourself from entering the forest then as it's not your habitat. Do they same for the lakes and the seas, etc, or do you think those belong to humans too and we have priority?

As much as I agree that there should be dog friendly and non friendly places to accommodate those who don't like them, you cannot ban dogs from everywhere. Don't like a cafe that's dog friendly ? Don't go. If I want to be away from children, I choose child free places 🤷‍♀️ Human or no human, I am just as entitled to keep away from people's badly behaved children as you are from dogs.

You’re the sort of person I sincerely hope keeps far, far away from any of my grandchildren.

Reversing in to my parking space last night after discussing the amount of dog shit all over the quaint holiday town, I noticed a black bag in my mirror just as my rear wheel went over it.

Yes, it was a discarded bag full of poo, which is now all over my rear tyre and the car park. Such considerate owners those of you who scoop, but then as soon as you’re out of view, discard in private like this.

Dogs are everywhere?!
rocketgal · 29/10/2024 18:28

@DBD1975 that would be the obvious solution if people weren't taking dogs to the pharmacy, John Lewis, university open days...

My answer is dog friendly carriages
(or areas) dog free carriages or areas. This will definitely happen in the future due to so many people with allergies & it appears far more so today.

So many posters on mumsnet absolutely abhor children. They should do a survey on it, it’s fascinating.

Bring on Dogsnet: The Threadworm Thread.

Tapthisscreen · 29/10/2024 12:21

Agreed. So if dog haters stop weaponising their minor interactions with dogs, dog owners won’t retaliate and we can avoid 24 pages of nonsense because someone saw two dogs.

Well said, I sometimes wonder where these people live who seem to open their front doors, then in Hitchcock like fashion, thousands of dogs all look up and charge towards them. Dog haters could just sod off and leave dog owners the fuck alone or maybe we should sit in our homes with our dogs on their leads in case one of these unfortunate flowers accidentally walks through our lounge and is near a dog!

AnnieSnap · 29/10/2024 19:18

WhatASadLittleLifeJayne · 27/10/2024 19:41

Ugh. I hate how you’re expected to fawn over them too. Dog owners looking at you expecting an interaction when you walk past their cafe table and their dog sniffs you…. 😄 I am v antisocial when it comes to dogs.

No, most owners don’t! 🙄

Zanatdy · 29/10/2024 19:20

Imagine a life where you hate dogs? Its like my worse nightmare. I mean as many have said, most much better behaved that many children

In the the past, I asked why men were on Mumsnet. I was shouted down by lots of members, saying these days MN is a general discussion forum. On that basis, posters don’t need to like children! I don’t dislike them, so long as they are not near me, running, screaming, or messing about on the back of my seat.

CrazyGoatLady · 29/10/2024 19:58

AnnieSnap · 29/10/2024 19:18

No, most owners don’t! 🙄

I have never actively sought out interactions with random people while sat minding my own business at a cafe or pub with my dogs. If anything, I have to more often fend off kids who run up to them wanting to stroke them, especially the Samoyed because she is so fluffy. I don't mind, but ask first and gentle hands and all that.

It's mad, there were no fewer than 10 dogs at the firework display I went to on Saturday for Halloween

Anyone who thinks that’s an appropriate place to take a dog - regardless of whether it’s technically allowed - shouldn’t be allowed to have one. It’s just unfair on the dog to expose them to that environment.

Edited

our German Shepherd when I was growing up LOVED fireworks. so he used to come to the displays with us. yes, that's really weird, I know, but if he heard them, he'd run to the window and watch them. he always had a lovely time.
that said, most dogs I don't think would enjoy it at all! another dog we had, a lurcher, so not exactly small enough for it to not be difficult, used to practically climb on our shoulders and pant in a panic when there were fireworks.
I definitely think they should keep them to organised displays, or only specific dates. that way you can plan for it, but they seem to be all over the place at the latter end of the year.
