Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

Couldn't think of anything worse, than taking my dogs shopping or to places to eat.

@TheKhakiBiscuit

some people treat them like babies. Most people just treat them like a loved part of the family. It's not 1950, most people don't treat them like a garden security dog. We have alarms & cameras for that now. They are part of the family/companion animals, no longer outside security, but inside pets.

retailers look after their business & will do what's more profitable 🤷🏻‍♀️. If it's more profitable to allow customers to bring their dogs in, then that's how it is!

I'd suggest not eating their poo!

henlake7 · 29/10/2024 08:51

As a PP said its the 'shitty selfish dog owners' that are the problem IMO, not the dogs. Dogs really dont need to come to every event in your life and they def dont need to be in shops or pubs unless they are actually doing a job.

TBH though I have the opposite problem owning 3 tiny, cutesy looking dogs. I dont want grubby, filthy little rugrats manhandling my dogs. I dont feel any need for strangers to meet and greet them.
and yet I often find myself literally running away from kids in parks or telling people to leave them alone as they bite (I mean technically they could....even though 1 has no teeth!). Other peoples dogs are not toys or amusements for other peoples kids and just because a dog is in public doesnt make it public property.

I guess Im saying for every person who feels dogs are a blight on society is a person who is convinced that 'all dogs love me' and wont leave them alone!

I love dogs always had them. But agree dogs everywhere is ridiculous. At an event last night thousands of people walking round Albert docks and pier head in the dark. Small dogs getting drop kicked by accident as under everyone's feet.. why anyone would take a dog to a crowded event beggers belief.

I take my dog everywhere!

(except pharmacies, supermarkets etc).

good dog owners don’t leave their dogs alone for hours on end.

he’s very well behaved. And I don’t take him into places where they say no dogs.

ive always lived in dog friendly places and most shops have dog treats. He’s normally served with a bowl of water before I’m served at cafes/pubs.

lots of studies on how dogs lower humans stress….

Dogs like yours don't. Dogs should not be taken everywhere. Good dog owners don't take their dog shopping; the poor dog.

Ugh. I hate how you’re expected to fawn over them too. Dog owners looking at you expecting an interaction when you walk past their cafe table and their dog sniffs you…. 😄 I am v antisocial when it comes to dogs.

Hell, yes....you are expected to fawn. My neighbours have a dog, their first...no idea how to train it. It barks all the time they're out, poor thing; I feel sorry for it. When they are walking it, they allow it to jump up....all over clothes, and it can hurt. They look on fondly, expectantly. If you tell the dog to 'get down', they look at you as if you have all the warmth of Stalin. I grew up with dogs, dogs are fine, but now, they are EVERYWHERE, and often badly behaved.

Don’t moan about dogs approaching people uninvited and then moan about not being able to approach dogs uninvited.

I am objecting to owners who who cannot control their dogs (while still insisting their behaviour is friendly) and owners who take their dogs into situations the dog can’t cope well with…and expecting everyone around to learn about dogs to accommodate their own lack of good judgement

i think it’s fine to ‘complain’ about a dog chasing you and biting you while an owner does nothing to stop it. But I am fully aware that there are people who will somehow find a reason that I was actually the problem and a little dog literacy on my part (maybe don’t run in parks?) could have prevented the whole thing

RelativePitch · 29/10/2024 09:40

I really love dogs, so I don't mind seeing so many of them out and about. But if you're not so fond it must be a nightmare because they are everywhere! My dog stays at home when we go out because she appreciates the time away from us. We're quite a loud household.

Fireworks are more extreme these days, around here people are letting them off randomly every night since the clocks went back. Some of them are like bombs going off. As for dogs being tougher years ago- people are more aware of how animals are affected by fireworks these days and are perhaps more worried about how their pets will suffer. HTH

Dogs were nervous about fireworks back then. No one had local Facebook groups to vent their anger about how it was affecting their animals. I think that's why we hear about it more.

Forwhatitsworth18 · 29/10/2024 10:09

I think it's wrong & unfair to call people 'animal haters' because they have a dislike of dogs in shops, bars & restaurants. I am of this opinion & I love animals, admittedly from a distance. I also love watching David Attenborough documentaries.

I can't believe the John Lewis stance on this now. Can you imagine how the store would be if every single dog owner who frequents John Lewis decided to take their dog on the same day. It would be chaos with people trying to look at rails of clothes while trying to navigate avoiding bumping into dogs. This is without considering possible accidents with staff having to clean it up. Absolute madness again with the exception of assistance dogs.

What's wrong with bringing your dog's along? They are part of the family too.
Never trust someone who doesn't like dogs.

To be frank, it's utter rubbish to base trusting a person on their feelings about dogs. 🫣

You do not get to dictate to other people who or what they refer to as their family.
My dog is my family (it is just the two of us), and that has absolutely nothing to do with you whatsoever.
For some people, their dog is the only family they have.
There is no need to be so spiteful about such people. no need at all.

But the post which started this particular linre of chat refered to not trusting people who don't like dogs. 🫣

You often see dogs on campuses. Our Uni has therapy dogs. There are guide dogs and hearing dogs. Guide dogs in training are brought in to be socialised.

Does the dog on hatred here extend to working dogs, or is just confined to family dogs? Or dogs that have been let down by humans and aren't well trained/socialised?

I don't get the general 'dog' hatred. It's so uninformed. It's also so predictable and miserable.

Cue the predictable, miserable responses.

Also cue the not understanding why everyone doesn't feel tje same as you type of posts. 🫣

Freemanhardyandwillis · 29/10/2024 11:08

When I was pregnant, a dog jumped up at me and scratched me through my clothes - you could see the red claw marks on my skin. Apparently I was being ridiculous to object because the dog was "friendly". Unfortunately these sorts of owners are far from rare.

Tbf my colleagues eye me with suspicion for not being ecstatic about dogs, not drinking and preferring cats. 🤣

Agreed. So if dog haters stop weaponising their minor interactions with dogs, dog owners won’t retaliate and we can avoid 24 pages of nonsense because someone saw two dogs.

CrowleyKitten · 29/10/2024 14:59

Flossflower · 27/10/2024 22:51

There were far fewer dogs then. I am old and I just don’t remember loads of dog poo about. What I do remember is lying down and rolling down hills. You couldn’t do that now. You would get covered in dog poo. In my youth people didn’t have such large or aggressive dogs.

I'm in my 40s, and there was definitely more dog poo around in my childhood than now. seemed like we were always having to scrape it off our shoes.
and, of course, there was infamous white dog poo.

yes, there are still inconsiderate dog owners now, but back then a pooper scooper or poo bag was still quite a novelty. most people just hoped the dog wouldn't poo until you got them somewhere appropriate for them to poo.

the ones that bother me most though, are the ones that DO bag it if someone is around, then when nobody is looking, they chuck it in a hedge or hang it on a fence or something. better to find a stick and flick it into a hedge or something rather than encase it in plastic, then turn it into litter containing poo.

Children are HUMANS.

They have a right to be where other humans are, unlike dogs which are ANIMALS.

I feel exhausted having to explain this.

You need to give your head a wobble.

Firstly humans belong to animals Kingdom. We are primates but also mammals.

Secondly, we are the only stupid species on this planet who actually pay to be able to live. No other species pay rent, food or bills.

Thirdly, please ban your children and yourself from entering the forest then as it's not your habitat. Do they same for the lakes and the seas, etc, or do you think those belong to humans too and we have priority?

As much as I agree that there should be dog friendly and non friendly places to accommodate those who don't like them, you cannot ban dogs from everywhere. Don't like a cafe that's dog friendly ? Don't go. If I want to be away from children, I choose child free places 🤷‍♀️ Human or no human, I am just as entitled to keep away from people's badly behaved children as you are from dogs.

Dogs allowed in the office on certain job adverts, puts people off. Dream job, cannot apply as there will be dogs stinking, barking and dog-talk. Taking away choices from people automatically because one employee asks for their dog to come to work. Worse for allergy sufferers.

WhatNoRaisins · 29/10/2024 16:07

It never occured to me that when applying for jobs I'd have to consider whether or not I'd be sharing office space with a dog. I mean that one really is quite batshit.
