Speaking to my mum today and she told me this isn't normal

I never really thought about it because its something that has always happened to me, Didn't really think anything of it until my mum brought it up today..

Say I start to feel hungry, it will get to a certain point where if I don't eat something pretty much straight away i will start to feel so sick and ill, that when i actually do eat it makes me feel more sick, it doesn't take away the hunger. so basically I will then have to force down the meal feeling sick, it just sort of gets to a certain point then once that point passes it wouldn't matter if I ate 3 plate fulls of food it wouldn't take away my hunger.

So basically I go from 'I could do with getting something to eat' to 'I feel so sick with hunger that its making me feel ill' within a few minutes then i eat something and feel really sick throughout the meal and it feels like I have to force it down, then once the meal is gone I just feel sick and hungry..

Been like this my entire life.. I remember years ago getting home from work feeling so hungry, then the sickness started when I was waiting for a food delivery, by the time it arrived i couldn't eat it at all and just felt sick the rest of the night.

Mum thinks i need to go to the doctors but its not a recent thing at all so would i be wasting their time? anyone else out there have this?

This is a recognised thing in teens and young adults - I had it myself unit well into my 30s. Had to eat before I got too hungry or would have to force food down, as pretty much gagging.

There was no treatment available back then, just behavioural accommodation, ie eat sooner rather than later. No harm in asking your GP. I'd just make sure you have healthy snacks around to tide you over until meal time if you can't eat when you want to.

Ooo this is me. I always thought it’s a blood sugar thing.

MsCactus · 25/10/2024 19:04

I've always had this too

MsCactus · 25/10/2024 19:05

I also get faint after eating a big meal - not sure if the two are related?

sparemeatyre · 25/10/2024 19:07

She’s right. Not normal.
Talk to your GP.

My friend suffers similar to this, is some kind of reflux, stomach acid splashing up esophagus. She was gagging and vomiting on road one day as we walked to get lunch. We didn’t get lunch … she needed to get home. Per Dr, she change diet, did lose weight, but ultimately eats 6 small meals a day. Needs to prevent stomach from getting too acidic (worse empty stomach but lot of acid)

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 25/10/2024 19:08

I was like this when I was younger- i thought it was down to having a fast metabolism or blood sugar.
Now I make sure to snack between meals (healthy filling snacks like nuts /bananas). And i cant eat sweets/cakes on their own- that makes me feel ill- always has to be after a balanced meal.
Veggies and protein seem to help the most.

EllieQ · 25/10/2024 19:09

i have something similar - if I start feeling hungry but don’t eat anything straight away, I’ll start feeling a bit faint/ dizzy and nauseous. However, once I start eating the nausea goes away, and I feel better after a short while. I’ve always assumed it’s something related to blood sugars and make sure that I eat frequent snacks so I never ‘drop’ to that level of hunger.

Malvala · 25/10/2024 19:10

Definitely not normal.

Get your blood sugar checked.

PuddingAunt · 25/10/2024 19:11

Have you ever tried eating something sweet first? I know a few people who get this (they are related) and two sweet biscuits seems to help. Obviously ideal is frequent savoury snacks but when it's gone too far a little sugar is needed.

Yes, me too!
I'm 45, thought it was anxiety. I had that all my adult life.
😳

Not quite the same, but if I get too hungry I get stomach pains that don't go away even if I eat. It's linked to time of day. I can be ravenous in the morning and be fine but mod afternoon it is terrible. I have to have snacks at work for 3/4pm. I assumed it was something to do with stomach acid etc but just manage it via snacks.

Wonderballs · 25/10/2024 19:40

I have this, but it goes away if I take omazeprole so I assume it’s acid

WhatTheFudges · 25/10/2024 19:42

Not normal at all and you should speak to a GP.

I imagine the way I am is normal (although maybe everyone thinks they’re normal?) but mines is like traffic lights,
Green light- feel peckish, I could eat.
Amber light- starving, maybe hunger pangs.
Red light- gone so long without food I feel sick and need to eat right now. Then once I do eat feel complete fine.

To be honest I normally eat at green light stage, I’m a grazer rather than a meal eater.

gillefc82 · 25/10/2024 19:48

I suffer from heartburn and acid reflux and used to regularly experience similar, as well as reflux and heartburn so bad I couldn’t sleep.

I’m meant to take 2x lansoprazole daily but find if I miss a day or two (my own fault), the issues, including the nausea will start popping up again.

Go to your GP @anyoneelseorjustme they will be able to help you.

Me too!! I'm delighted to hear I'm not the only one (sorry).
Mine started when I was 23, immediately after a fortnight when I ate no food at all (I was unwell with a non-related issue). Ever since that two week empty period, my stomach has got really sore if it is allowed to growl with hunger too long. I have around 30 minutes to get something into it, otherwise I get the pain which lasts a couple of hours even after I eat. But it does only happen later in the day, never in the morning. How strange that it's just like yours! Was yours also triggered by an period where you didn't eat, or have you always had it?

Frozensnow · 25/10/2024 19:52

I think it’s quite normal. I get it after a while but my mum gets it quite quickly like you op. She deals with it by eating regularly. She thinks it happens if her blood sugar drops

TinyTeachr · 25/10/2024 19:54

I had this until I got pregnant. I assume something hormonal? I would get sharp horrible pain in my stomach that would be agony when I ate, but the longer I left it the worse it would get so I had to sort of hunch over and force myself to eat. I usually just made sure I never got to that stage.

I don't remember when it started particularly. I think it became more of an issue once I was an adult and my routine changed. At school I would generally come home and have a snack at 4ish. At work I often have lunch around 12ish and then get hungry. Growing up we had a phrase 'emergency cereal bar'. My mum always had a cereal bar or similar on her for periods of hunger. (My brother got very hangry too). So I probably generally ate quick enough.

I'm fascinated by gut health and how it impacts our body. I wonder if you not eating somehow changed that or maybe your body somehow decided it needed to send more urgent signals to make sure you ate after going without. This is all complete speculation though!

DH often rolls his eyes and says it's fine to be hungry but I will basically have stomach pains until bedtime. Weirdly I have done periods of intermittent fasting and gone from 6pm until 10/11am and been fine!

Moonlightdust · 25/10/2024 20:06

My 11 year old DD is exactly the same. She’s had blood tests and been to the Drs who can’t find an answer. Tbh since she was a baby she’s always had a small stomach and would bring up milk if she over fed. To this day she can’t eat big meals but has to graze during the day and eat little and often as she will get hunger pains and feel sick from hunger. Then like yourself if too hungry will feel sick even whilst eating and afterwards.

snowbellsundersnow · 25/10/2024 20:09

Interesting thread! I don’t get this but if I go too long without eating I will get a migraine, which includes nausea and vomiting.

Jewnicorn · 25/10/2024 20:12

Me and 3/5 of my children are like this. We’ve all had various investigations and nothing untoward has ever been found. The worst for them is if they’ve rejected dinner and don’t have something carby before bed they will vomit in the night or before breakfast.

The absolute weirdest part for me though is that several times a year I will fast for 25 hours and am absolutely fine which suggests it’s somewhat psychosomatic, yet my kids’ symptoms suggest it very much isn’t. On a normal day I eat four small meals and dinner rather than three bigger meals which seems to help.

BaronessBomburst · 25/10/2024 20:14

Teen DS gets this, as does DM. I've always presumed it was due to blood sugar levels dropping. I have a different twist; if I get over-hungry I start to feel fluey, even down to the achey neck. It goes shortly after I've eaten or had a glass of juice.
So, it may not be normal, but it's certainly common.

Justcallmebebes · 25/10/2024 20:19

I have a DD in her 30's who does this. It's not healthy and the older she gets the worse it is getting. She is underweight and looks unhealthy. I have no answer though as this is the way she is and there's no talking to her about it

Bitdemented · 25/10/2024 20:31

Maybe get tested for Helicobacter Pylori ...it's a breath test. Symptoms sound v similar to mine. Bacteria in stomach. Lots of people have it but no symptoms. Intense course of antibiotics for 2 wks. I m not a doctor but look up symptoms & ask your doctor if it could be it.

TheDandyLion · 25/10/2024 20:35
