Speaking to my mum today and she told me this isn't normal

I never really thought about it because its something that has always happened to me, Didn't really think anything of it until my mum brought it up today..

Say I start to feel hungry, it will get to a certain point where if I don't eat something pretty much straight away i will start to feel so sick and ill, that when i actually do eat it makes me feel more sick, it doesn't take away the hunger. so basically I will then have to force down the meal feeling sick, it just sort of gets to a certain point then once that point passes it wouldn't matter if I ate 3 plate fulls of food it wouldn't take away my hunger.

So basically I go from 'I could do with getting something to eat' to 'I feel so sick with hunger that its making me feel ill' within a few minutes then i eat something and feel really sick throughout the meal and it feels like I have to force it down, then once the meal is gone I just feel sick and hungry..

Been like this my entire life.. I remember years ago getting home from work feeling so hungry, then the sickness started when I was waiting for a food delivery, by the time it arrived i couldn't eat it at all and just felt sick the rest of the night.

Mum thinks i need to go to the doctors but its not a recent thing at all so would i be wasting their time? anyone else out there have this?

I've not had that, but since my 50s I notice if I leave too long before I eat I feel unwell. I assume low blood sugar.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 25/10/2024 20:42

Only ever had this when I was pregnant.

Jingleballs2 · 25/10/2024 20:47

Om guessing not normal, but I had this in early pregnancy! Od go from fine to starving in 2 minutes and if I didn't eat it fast enough it would have me dizzy/sweating/gagging and having to force food in 🤢

Craftycorvid · 25/10/2024 20:48

There’s a very unpleasant phenomena called ‘dumping syndrome’ whereby if you suddenly eat after going a bit too long without food, the rapid rise in blood sugar can make you feel quite ill: hot, dizzy, racing heart and nauseous.

HidingFromDD · 25/10/2024 20:51

I had similar (not quite as bad) most of my adult life. Post menopause (or maybe post divorce?) it’s gone the other way and I can frequently skip meals as I don’t notice I’m hungry, or just get past it. I def think it’s liked to stomach acid which may be linked to stress generally

BendingSpoons · 25/10/2024 19:37

Not quite the same, but if I get too hungry I get stomach pains that don't go away even if I eat. It's linked to time of day. I can be ravenous in the morning and be fine but mod afternoon it is terrible. I have to have snacks at work for 3/4pm. I assumed it was something to do with stomach acid etc but just manage it via snacks.

I used to get something similar now and again when I was younger. It started in childhood. I wouldn't feel hungry, but when I did finally eat I would get stomach pains and would need to lie down on my front until they passed. Don't think it's happened for years now.

i have something similar - if I start feeling hungry but don’t eat anything straight away, I’ll start feeling a bit faint/ dizzy and nauseous. However, once I start eating the nausea goes away, and I feel better after a short while. I’ve always assumed it’s something related to blood sugars and make sure that I eat frequent snacks so I never ‘drop’ to that level of hunger.

That's normal and not what the OP is describing.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 25/10/2024 20:55

Had similar when I had a stomach ulcer (from taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach - don’t do it) took a while to go even after the ulcer treatment, so I think a little psychological/stress related too. Complicated things, guts!

DazedAndConfused321 · 25/10/2024 21:02

I have that- not linked to acid reflux or blood sugar issue for me. I think my digestive system prefers to be stimulated consistently. So 5 small meals rather than 3 main meals works for me. Get it checked though

Choosenandenough · 25/10/2024 21:05

I get this - I thought it was hypoglycaemia or thereabouts.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 25/10/2024 21:10

I felt like that - hungry, faint, then nauseous (and often shaky afterwards ) once I ate.

I was diagnosed with Coeliac a couple of years ago and haven't felt it since.

Franjipanl8r · 25/10/2024 21:18

See your GP.

Newsenmum · 25/10/2024 21:19

I think this is more a case of making sure this doesn’t happen? In this day and age, we have so much good about (and more people overeating if anything) so isn’t normally an issue. Always keep a snack on you! Humans are supposed to eat regular small meals.

MrsW9 · 25/10/2024 21:42

Yeah, I have something very similar. Also have an issue PP mentioned where I feel sick and sometimes dizzy if I have something very sweet on an empty stomach. I just have to snack when necessary! It was worse when I was a teenager, but I guess also I now have more control over when I eat rather than having really regulated snack and meal times.

Grmumpy · 25/10/2024 21:43

I can’t go without food. I have to nibble if I am waiting for a meal and am very h7ngry or I won’t be able to eat the meal. I wondered whether I had been fed to a schedule as a baby so think hunger is threatening. I know people who won’t eat during the day if they are going out for an evening meal. I could never do that.

JustWorryingABit · 25/10/2024 21:44

I need to eat when hungry and I used to carry some things called "chocolate power bars" when I was travelling for if there wasn't something immediately available. They were great. I can't seem to get them any more and I think it's possible that they were mainly in america. They were mostly protein and also added vitamins. They really were a lifesaver for me

JustWorryingABit · 25/10/2024 21:46

My inlaws aren't like this and I used to find it hilarious when they and my family would get together and they would say "shall we have lunch at 1.30 or 2pm?". Then there would be a shrill squeak from somewhere as one of my family members said "12!". It always had to be 12 noon in my family. No wiggle room whatsoever.

Octavia64 · 25/10/2024 21:46

Yes I have this.

I don't force the food down any more, I just drink very sugary tea. Or complan.

Eyeballpaula · 25/10/2024 21:49

Are you recognising hunger cues? We have a sense called interoception which is the awareness of what is happening within our body - like hunger/ thirst/ sleep signals.

Are you missing the early cues?

TheWholeShackShimmies · 25/10/2024 21:54

I've had this for decades too but I do have IBS and functional dyspepsia.
It has been so much worse during perimenopause.

Normallynumb · 25/10/2024 21:56

My DS2 GF has this exactly.
She's 26. She has to eat regularly because if she gets hungry she becomes too sick to eat
I guessed blood sugar and / or fast metabolism

Sia8899 · 25/10/2024 21:56

I don’t think there’s anything a GP could do, but it sounds like something you need to manage though as otherwise you’ll end up feeling ill a lot and it’ll interfere with your life. Sometimes after being very hungry I’ll get sweaty and lightheaded after eating but the feeling of hunger goes away. If I were you I would eat on a schedule and take snacks everywhere.

I read something recently that non ND people have quite a lot of hunger cues before getting to the stage of stomach cramping and nausea but some ND people don’t realise they’re hungry until they’re feeling ill or in pain

Me too!! I'm delighted to hear I'm not the only one (sorry).
Mine started when I was 23, immediately after a fortnight when I ate no food at all (I was unwell with a non-related issue). Ever since that two week empty period, my stomach has got really sore if it is allowed to growl with hunger too long. I have around 30 minutes to get something into it, otherwise I get the pain which lasts a couple of hours even after I eat. But it does only happen later in the day, never in the morning. How strange that it's just like yours! Was yours also triggered by an period where you didn't eat, or have you always had it?

I also get exactly this! And it only ever happens in the late afternoon as well, never in the morning. It’s also usually worse if I’ve been sitting down the whole day eg sitting qr my desk working all afternoon. I’m even more curious why this happens now!

This is 100% me! I have asked Drs and never had any help.

I call it my Unfillable Hunger.

Can I ask where you feel hunger please? As I feel it in the back of my throat, not my stomach...

BobbyBiscuits · 25/10/2024 22:02

You can lose your appetite if you don't get to eat regularly. I get a thing where the hungrier I get, the more fussy I am. I feel I need a specific food and other things are useless and tasteless.
I think you just need to eat smaller more regular meals. And regular small snacks. Like having nuts, crisps, even sweets or dried fruit in your bag to nibble in between meals?
Or having something like a milkshake, protein shake in between meals?
