Speaking to my mum today and she told me this isn't normal

I never really thought about it because its something that has always happened to me, Didn't really think anything of it until my mum brought it up today..

Say I start to feel hungry, it will get to a certain point where if I don't eat something pretty much straight away i will start to feel so sick and ill, that when i actually do eat it makes me feel more sick, it doesn't take away the hunger. so basically I will then have to force down the meal feeling sick, it just sort of gets to a certain point then once that point passes it wouldn't matter if I ate 3 plate fulls of food it wouldn't take away my hunger.

So basically I go from 'I could do with getting something to eat' to 'I feel so sick with hunger that its making me feel ill' within a few minutes then i eat something and feel really sick throughout the meal and it feels like I have to force it down, then once the meal is gone I just feel sick and hungry..

Been like this my entire life.. I remember years ago getting home from work feeling so hungry, then the sickness started when I was waiting for a food delivery, by the time it arrived i couldn't eat it at all and just felt sick the rest of the night.

Mum thinks i need to go to the doctors but its not a recent thing at all so would i be wasting their time? anyone else out there have this?

I have had this for as long as I can remember. Except if I leave it too long I actually am sick, even if I have finally eaten. It's like if I go pass a certain amount of hunger that's it, too late. Whenever I Google it it says that acids build up in the stomach the longer it's empty which causes nausea and vomiting so I assume it is normal. If I went to the GP they would probably say make sure you eat!

justasking111 · 25/10/2024 22:14

I get this but also get acid reflux. Ate too late tonight because husband was out. Been feeling blah since eating.

Maybe get tested for Helicobacter Pylori ...it's a breath test. Symptoms sound v similar to mine. Bacteria in stomach. Lots of people have it but no symptoms. Intense course of antibiotics for 2 wks. I m not a doctor but look up symptoms & ask your doctor if it could be it.

Edited to say....Bacterial infection in stomach.

It caused me years of unexplained pain when "hungry" but worse after eating ( sometimes debilitating.... but at its worst after 3 yrs i had to lie down to ease the pain....excruciating)

.
One GP said it was anxiety.. but a year later I went in again and tested positive for Helicopter bacter ...Again I m not a GP, but a lot of symptoms described by posters are similar. I m fine since, v intense course of antibiotics & anti antacids worked ( a lot of meds ) .
Please just ask GP

Helicobacter pylori ( sorry autocorrect in above post )

RamonaRamirez · 25/10/2024 22:46

I have this, my dad has this, my brother and one of my sons had it too

so am assuming it is a genetic thing. We all have “sensitive stomachs” and are prone to reflux/acudity/car sickness etc

i don’t just fell sick, I get hot and a bit sweaty and then it is too late to eat as I feel nauseous.

i have seen the GP and they said it is not a sickness that needs medication but just how some people are and to just always carry some crackers it plain carbs with me as emergency snack… and that does the job

cream crackers are my stand by snack of choice

ffsfindmeausername · 25/10/2024 22:48

I had this during my first pregnancy with dd I had to eat to keep the sickness at bay. it went away as soon as she was born so I'm assuming it was hormonal. never had it in my second pregnancy the which was a ds. I have been told it was the high levels of female hormones in my body that caused it.

I was going to suggest the same.
For a very very long time I had the same as pps. Then one day it must have flared up or gotten worse. Went to GP and he tested for H.pylori. two kinds of antibiotics for a month cured me.

Doodleflips · 25/10/2024 22:52

I’d suggest sorting out your gut health.
take a decent probiotic (at least 10billion per day), possibly L-glutamine too.
i used it have terrible stomach issues, reflux, acid, hiatus hernia, gastritis, I’d constantly be taking buscopan.
i now rarely take that, and my stomach is pretty good.
i sitting out my diet, and worked out what I should and shouldn’t be eating (I.e. glucose fructose - v bad, clean foods good).
I take a probiotic, wild oregano oil capsule and L-glutamine, plus I have kefir yogurt for breakfast and a glass of kombucha a day.
Plus, make sure you’re eating at sensible times.

I need to eat when hungry and I used to carry some things called "chocolate power bars" when I was travelling for if there wasn't something immediately available. They were great. I can't seem to get them any more and I think it's possible that they were mainly in america. They were mostly protein and also added vitamins. They really were a lifesaver for me

Do you have a brand name or exact flavor? There are so many different kinds with high protein. Luna, Cliff, Kind, Power Bar......too many to mention.

i "function"on tummy burn(stomach thinks my throats cut) is a very short window where i NEED food.
if i miss it i cnt eat, literally require self to force feed.(lick spoon dipped in soup)
its gotta be disorder/dysfunction.... i sometimes "sneak" myself 2 digestives with butter when i wake at this time of night. even when im not hungry/think bout it

Pancake1203 · 26/10/2024 05:51

I get this too! I end up with a migraine and actually being sick if I push it too far. I assumed it was to do with blood sugar and stomach acid or something? Like you, once I’m past the point of no return, eating won’t even fix it. I try to make sure I always have snacks with me to avoid it.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 26/10/2024 18:15

I’ve often felt like that over the years. I’m diagnosed type 2 diabetic , now, and if I get over hungry it makes me feel dizzy and sick, and when I do eat, I will feel a bit dizzy for a short time. It’s not good for me to feel that hungry…😬

She’s right. Not normal.
Talk to your GP.

My friend suffers similar to this, is some kind of reflux, stomach acid splashing up esophagus. She was gagging and vomiting on road one day as we walked to get lunch. We didn’t get lunch … she needed to get home. Per Dr, she change diet, did lose weight, but ultimately eats 6 small meals a day. Needs to prevent stomach from getting too acidic (worse empty stomach but lot of acid)

Yes, needs investigating Op

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 26/10/2024 19:39

I would see a doc.

I can feel hungry and still not be too worried about getting food (have never been ‘desperate’ to eat) and if I am busy I just don’t think about it at all and can skip meals without a second thought. Interestingly I had a mother very much like me.

DH gets really hangry, he was my first experience of someone being truly arsey when hungry 😂, but if he gets fed he’s fine straight away, I call him my little gremlin. Interestingly DH had an alcoholic mum and his dad worked away a lot when he was real young g (until dad worked out what was happening and removed him from the situation) so food was sparse and infrequent.

Have never come across your situation, but, as demonstrated above, we are all different, but think it’s worth getting it checked out although might be a throw over from genetics or past situation maybe? Worth getting it checked out though.

User100000000000 · 26/10/2024 19:53

This is a really unhealthy relationship with food. Why are you delaying eating for that long to begin with? It sounds like there could be a mental health issue at the root of it

BooBooDoodle · 26/10/2024 20:11

Could be blood sugar levels. I would start carrying bananas, nuts, seeds and bottled water around with you so you stay hydrated and nourished. I get up and don’t eat until dinner time. If I eat breakfast it makes me feel ill, just not hungry at all until my dinner. I’ll snack in between then have a substantial tea which carries me through. I usually carry bananas, apples and oranges in my bag with water when I’m on the go. My kids and DH religiously have to eat breakfast, lunch and tea with snacking in between. They get angry and tetchy when they don’t eat and it’s a bloody nightmare.

Bubbe57 · 26/10/2024 20:34

Yom Kippur is a 26 hour total fast (which also means no water). I can’t fast like I used to when I was younger. But when I did that fast it I didn’t get doubling over abdominal pain that on other days I would get if I didn’t eat dinner on time because I was rushing around. That must have been gas. Not sure why I didn’t suffer as much during a total fast…

Hallowbeflashed · 26/10/2024 21:28

I’ve got this. I also get hiccups if I leave it too long between eating. It’s acid reflux in my case.

Psychoticbreak · 26/10/2024 21:45

I have this and it is a symptom of my adhd. The transitters from my brain dont tell me I getting hungry I am basically not hungry at all and then sick to the stomach because I am ravenous. I also have asd on top of the ocd and it is a common symptom.

BlindBat · 26/10/2024 21:52

This is me too. Glad to see so many other people experience similar symptoms, I also suffer with really bad acid reflux. Eating bland food, crackers, digestives, plain popcorn as a snack helps.
This is a really helpful thread OP been suffering dreadfully the last couple of weeks.

Christwosheds · 26/10/2024 21:55

DPotter · 25/10/2024 18:34

This is a recognised thing in teens and young adults - I had it myself unit well into my 30s. Had to eat before I got too hungry or would have to force food down, as pretty much gagging.

There was no treatment available back then, just behavioural accommodation, ie eat sooner rather than later. No harm in asking your GP. I'd just make sure you have healthy snacks around to tide you over until meal time if you can't eat when you want to.

That’s interesting as my dd (19) has had this for a few years. If she doesn’t eat regularly it gets worse.

VivianLea · 26/10/2024 21:55

Go to the DR OP this isn't normal.

Fern95 · 26/10/2024 21:59

People forget that your blood pressure is low if you haven't eaten anything not just your blood sugar.

FlipFlopVibe · 26/10/2024 22:11

I get something very similar but with added spasms and cramps across my stomach when I start eating. Diagnosed with IBS. Yoi need to eat lityle and often. Always have snacks around. If I left too long between meals, I’d have a small biscuit about 20 minutes before the meal to avoid the cramping from ‘too much too quick’

H0mEredward · 26/10/2024 22:24

I have this. I have strategies to work round it. Hormones played a huge part in this so when I was going through different stages in my life, some strategies would need to be tweaked.

It's quite challenging to block out the noise of others when I let them know I am having an episode. Most of them can make my symptoms worse very quickly.

Some are utterly convinced I have bulimia or another eating disorder and as a kid would try pushing this narrative until my mum would shut them down.

I dreaded the idea of pregnancy because of how connected it was to hormones. Turns out, pregnancy healed the symptoms temporarily without any strategies and even into 4th trimester.

It's leptin resistance. It's hypoglycemia. It's a mitochondria issue.

I increased my carbohydrates and fluid intake. I was very skinny despite all this.

Processed foods, chocolates especially are the worst foods and I never went near them when I was due an episode.
