Disposable vapes being banned

BuzzieLittleBee · 24/10/2024 08:36

This has been confirmed today - coming into effect in June.

Looking at the bigger picture, this can only be a good thing. The environmental consequences of these are hideous, and they surely encourage a lot of 'casual' vaping.

They are also clearly big business. Newsagents, corner shops etc make a fortune from them (not just from the vapes but from the add can of drink, packet of crisps etc that people pick up when they go in for a vape). And I assume vaping shops also sell a lot of them too.

Will the banning lead to fewer kids vaping, I wonder? I hope so.

saying vapes are safer than cigarettes is a bit like saying chopping off your own finger is safer than chopping own arm. Completely true but not that meaningful in the grand scheme of things.

Agree! And as I pointed out earlier the long term effects of vaping are still yet to be seen.

My point is that Labour are more bothered about businesses than they are about children.
If they cared about children then they would have implemented the vape ban, the way they are easy to go ahead with private schools.

I cannot explain it to you any clearer, I’m afraid.

Don’t be ridiculous. They need to have a cut off so they can allow old stock to be used up otherwise the business owners would be really riled up. Be glad they are actually implementing a ban. The Tories failed to do so.

What, almost nine months for the
old stock to be used up?

Just now much old stock is there? No one keeps so much back up stock. Supply chains are really tight these days.

Also, see how I can refrain from personal attacks? I’m sure you can try too.

kittensinthekitchen · 24/10/2024 13:23

I recently switched to the pod system, I use Gold Bar. So you have a couple of rechargeable battery casings, and just change over the mouthpiece which has the liquid in it.

Does anyone know if I'm right in thinking these are not being banned?

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 24/10/2024 13:26

What, almost nine months for the* old stock to be used up?*

It's 7 months 1 week until 1st June. And they need time for the legislation to be passed, that hasn't happened yet. So you need to pass the legislation, then have the time for businesses.

I agree June is quite a way away, but its probably only going to be 5-6 months from the legislation passing (they've said they want that to happen before Christmas).

Rummly · 24/10/2024 12:23

Nah, rubbish.

It’s more like chewing gum v chewing tobacco.

No one really know do they. You only need one of the many chemicals people pumping into their lungs to be carcinogenic - we will only know with time. They used to promote smoking as a healthy option, then we time we learnt it wasn't

MissyPants · 24/10/2024 13:28

They are an incredible waste of resources, when you can just re charge & re fill.
They are also really expensive when you compare them to re chargeable ones.
I think it's to cut waste and to reduce the "readily available" options to vape. Far too many kids are doing it when the real reason to use them should be to aid quitting smoking, not starting!

DogInATent · 24/10/2024 13:35

And the crazy thing is, there isn't a disposable vape that can't be refilled and recharged if the casing wasn't designed to prevent this. Some of the early disposables were reusable units with the charge circuit disabled!

It’s not just the stock on the shelves or items being held in the shop warehouses but elsewhere right down to the manufacturer and distributors. Hardly a personal attack. 🤔

How much stock do you think is there between manufacturers and warehouse?

4 to 6 weeks sea freight, let’s be generous and add 2 weeks either side and 4 for manufacturing. It’s four months tops. As for the available stock in retail then just how much do you think a corner shop has on the shelves and in the back room? It does not add up nine months.

Why don’t you use your common sense here?

Not dissimilar to mine and no, they're not being banned.

violentovulation · 24/10/2024 13:49

About time tbh. I am fed up of seeing them all over the floor outside. Almost as bad as those little nitrous capsules.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/10/2024 13:50

On unrelated matters I wish they’d sort out the electric scooters situation. Footpaths are now lethal.

It’s pointless trying to convince you, why don’t you be happy that it is actually happening and be done with it?

BuzzieLittleBee · 24/10/2024 13:56

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat The disposable vape market is worth billions in the UK, and there are people who have jobs directly involved in it. Plus there is tax revenue which is not insignificant. You don't just turn this all off at a moment's notice. Businesses have to plan and adjust. Giving them time to do this is the right thing to do.

And I say this as someone who is delighted about the ban.

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat read this and it might help you understand. The ban is also accompanied by other strategies which will also take time to implement….www.betterretailing.com/disposable-vapes-to-be-banned-from-june-2025/

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/10/2024 09:07

Are they going to let the private school parents adjust?

They got a similar notice period

GameOfJones · 24/10/2024 14:04

As an occasional vaper I am all for the ban. I used to smoke, then moved to vaping a couple of years ago. I pretty much quit that but then occasionally will be on a night out and buy a disposable vape from a corner shop. Or pick one up from Tesco when I'm doing my shopping if I feel particularly stressed.

I know it's an issue with my willpower BUT the availability of disposable vapes has made it much harder for me to totally quit them for good. They're cheap and you can just buy them and vape away instantly..... I know I wouldn't bother if I had to go and buy a reusable one and liquid etc.

So, I do think it's good news. Even if I selfishly thought "that's good, I'll never be able to buy them again" before I thought about the environment.

There have been tests. There have been historical tests on longstanding ingredients. And there have been tests on vaping itself. They do not show what you say.

You’re entitled to dislike vaping. You’re not entitled to spread nonsense about risk.

Normallynumb · 24/10/2024 15:12

I quit a 14 a day cigarette habit 5 years ago for a refillable vape. Still vaping now with much reduced nicotine
As an ex smoker I was called for a chest x Ray and so far my lungs are clear
In my opinion, walking along a main road exposes the lungs to more pollutants
I do agree with the banning of disposable vapes which are attractive to children, but I'm rolling my eyes wondering what labour will ban next
Whatever happened to freedom of choice.

BuzzieLittleBee · 24/10/2024 15:20

@Normallynumb Freedom of choice is a great thing, but the environmental impact of disposable vapes is a big factor too. Should we still have the choice to use 10 new plastic bags with every supermarket shop? No (IMO). Or the choice to pump CFCs into the atmosphere destroying the ozone layer? No.

There are other ways to vape, so there is still a valid option for people who want to cut down/out smoking (or people that take up vaping, but hopefully the removal of easy access to disposables will curtail that slightly).

Because I have a higher bar than you and be I think the ban should have come sooner.

How can you criticise them over freedom of choice when you have just said you agree with the ban?

EffinMagicFairy · 24/10/2024 15:39

Good, shame they aren’t banning the sickly synthetic flavours.

Plenty of originations disagree with you and say the long term impacts are not known yet. The NHS, Harvard Medical School etc. It is clearly much better than traditional smoking but now we are young people who aren't smokers taking it up which is bad news.
