Disposable vapes being banned

BuzzieLittleBee · 24/10/2024 08:36

This has been confirmed today - coming into effect in June.

Looking at the bigger picture, this can only be a good thing. The environmental consequences of these are hideous, and they surely encourage a lot of 'casual' vaping.

They are also clearly big business. Newsagents, corner shops etc make a fortune from them (not just from the vapes but from the add can of drink, packet of crisps etc that people pick up when they go in for a vape). And I assume vaping shops also sell a lot of them too.

Will the banning lead to fewer kids vaping, I wonder? I hope so.

What I’m really keen for is a massive tax on bottled water. The environmental benefit would be great. And the urban litter improvement!

Well I certainly am not. Why place a taxi on a healthy drink and not the legions of other drinks that are unhealthy? And how about fast food packaging, sandwich cartons, crisps and sweet wrappers, all of which I see far more of?
Empty water bottles are hardly seen compared to those.

gamerchick · 24/10/2024 09:31

Good. They can't be recycled and our councils asked us not to put them in the main waste. They need banning.

Great news. I hope people won’t go back to cigarettes. I think the low cost of the vapes was a huge factor in their popularity. A packet of cigarettes is now about £15 vs £5 for a vape.

I know little about vapes, but presumably using a refillable vape will still work out cheaper than cigarettes?

Kucinghitam · 24/10/2024 09:32

Great news! Awful things, bad for the health, deliberately marketed at children and dreadful for the environment.

Are they going to let the private school parents adjust?

For Christ's sake people need to get over this Private school thing. There are other options to private school.

I’ve only seen a refillable used by a friend and it looks bulky and like a lot of faff, which I think would put teenagers off.

Taxing the wealthy and trying to prevent the vulnerable get sick. I'm not sure anyone would be surprised that is where their priorities are.

You are missing my point.

If they were that bothered about protecting the vulnerable they would have implemented the ban sooner.

Your point is to try and shoehorn the private school VAT into a post about banning vapes.

It’s not ‘healthy’, it’s just water, most of which the gluggers don’t need anyway. Most bottled water drinking is just habit.

Bottled water is less pure than tap water.

And people who drink less water don’t start drinking coke and eating Walkers.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/10/2024 09:41

My point is that Labour are more bothered about businesses than they are about children.
If they cared about children then they would have implemented the vape ban, the way they are easy to go ahead with private schools.

I cannot explain it to you any clearer, I’m afraid.

They're rightly bothered about both. They have done as the Tories = nothing at all.

But they have implemented a disposable ban?

Nope. This is a refillable vape stick, not bulky, not a faff.

MissyB1 · 24/10/2024 09:52

It's a start, but next all vapes need to be made prescription only, like they are in some other Countries.

I'm not engaging with someone who will try and argue that people don't need water!

So we get people back to smoking? We need it to be easy for people to quit smoking not harder

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 24/10/2024 09:55

I’m glad disposables are being banned for environmental reasons, but please don’t think it’ll stop people! The vape industry is a rapidly evolving industry and they have already made a whole range of new types of devices that aren’t disposable. If you look behind the counter of any shop, you’ll see less Elf Bars and more of the 4 in 1 and cartridge types which are no bigger than a disposable.

I did notice the other day that I’ve seen less discarded vapes and packaging recently which is a good thing!

Comefromaway · 24/10/2024 09:58

I'm glad. I know quite a few young people who started vaping when they were underage. Some now regret starting. They tell me that they vape because they can't afford to smoke. Disposable vapes are so easy to obtain and are cheap. It won't stop some using reusables, but they are less affordable/less convenient so hopefully it will be a deterrent.

The issue is, it’s children who are using these disposable vapes, because they’re so accessible and being marketed as sweets, because of all the different flavours.

Not wishing to derail the post entirely, but are you seriously arguing that Labour “are more bothered about businesses than they are about children”? What is this in comparison to? Because it is certainly not in comparison to the previous government who, amongst other things:

  • Prioritised the re-opening of pubs over the full re-opening of schools during Covid
  • Painted over the wall murals at the unaccompanied child migrants centre
  • Closed over 1200 Sure Start Centres
  • Presided over massive real terms cuts to education and local authority budgets which run children’s social care services
  • All of this whilst their buddies in big business get wealthier, offering tax breaks, lucrative contracts and significant lobbying access.

Kids are using disposable vapes every day in this country. Yes, they will use refillable ones but these won’t be as accessible for them.

Private schools and families were given lots of notice of Labour’s intentions to charge VAT. It has been discussed on this forum since they first mooted the idea. It’s not a surprise to anyone. Don’t try to conflate the two issues.

Ok, but since most bottled water drinking is unnecessary - just peed straight out - you aren’t engaging with such a person.

Most experts tend to agree we don't need to be concerned about drinking an arbitrary amount of water per day: our bodies signal to us when we're thirsty, much like they do when we're hungry or tired. The only health benefit of drinking more than you need, it seems, will be the extra calories you expend by running to the loo more often.

How much water should you drink a day?

Here's how much water you actually need in a day – and how your body's thirst mechanism and hydration needs change as you age.

How about actually quitting and not doing either?

Is there any evidence of vaping stopping cigarette smoking on a significant scale? It seems it's instead just created vapers.

Pick a different hill to die on. I'd rather see water bottles discarded than coffee cups and mars bar wrappers.
