Who has their heating on?

I have just had cross words with dh and he has grudgingly agreed to put the heating on.

We live in a COLD house. It has had all the embellishments it can and it is freezing. I am currently in bed with the 'winter' duvet and a thick cardigan spread over that, I am wearing thermal underwear and a thick cardigan, and a scarf. I also have a cat as a heat pump! The air is icy, my hands are cold, my feet despite two pairs of socks in bed are icy.

DH says "well, you FEEL the cold, it's not colduntil it's minus 10 outside". Whereupon I shouted at him a bit and said I'd be in bed all winter.

DD is at her bf's near London. His parents have yhe heating on. Do you?

Why don't you just buy one?

And he would prefer a tumble dryer

IfIToldYouThisAboutMe · 24/10/2024 19:54

We've put ours on but I forgot the other day. Woke up to it 14.6 on thermostat. Our house is so cold. I've put it on now to 19 as dc just got back from an outdoor activity and it's damp and chilly out.

StarCourt · 25/10/2024 14:44

no heating on but we have started using heated blankets

Westfacing · 25/10/2024 15:14

It's like we're living in the 1950s when men ruled the roost!

So many posters on these heating threads refer to the 'DH' who won't allow the heating to go on before November - in the meantime the wife who feels the cold has to wear thermals, 2 pairs of socks, sometimes even a hat is mentioned!

Not to mention the bloody heated throws that everyone is issued with.

If money is tight then that's one thing but it seems many times it's just the man who has the last say - extraordinary.

ParisGellerFTW · 25/10/2024 15:25

God no,nowhere near needed yet. I've been wearing jumpers because I love them and I've got some really beautiful ones, but usually end up having to change because I'm too warm. Apart from 2 days a few weeks ago that were a bit nippy, it's been soooooo mild. I keep checking the weather to see if it's going to get colder...

buffyfaithspike · 25/10/2024 15:36

Yep because I'm unwell and shivering
Turned it up to 20c

Pedallleur · 25/10/2024 15:41

Minimum setting is 15 and we have the max approx 20. House is warm so generally switch it on/ off accordingly. Currently in Majorca where it was 27 this pm 😄 but that ends tomorrow. No wonder we are miserable in the UK. Just waking up and knowing you will be warm sets up the day.

Violetcake · 25/10/2024 15:44

We are in Scotland and have had it on since early October. Its just for 40 minutes in the morning as we get up and then for 45 minutes in the evening about tea time. We then boost the heating if we feel it cold but it hasn't been to cold to be honest.

Pedallleur · 25/10/2024 16:14

I can't believe how ordinary people are tormented like this. Being warm shouldn't be a luxury. Allowing energy companies to rule over us like this is wrong. A standing charge of 100s yet these companies have huge profits. No I don't have the answers but I know that allowing so many people to be frightened of heating the house is wrong. Get a wood burner? No, that's wrong. Reading today that Cliviger in Lancs has too many wood burners. Oil ch? No, that's bad and it needs transporting so double whammy.

Elderflower14 · 25/10/2024 16:19

We put ours on the other day...

Cos purchases of several hundred pounds are usually joint decisions

But having damp clothes around the house or during on radiators is no good. That water is now in the air and going to cause issues unless the windows are open. A tumble dryer is essential to me.

BearBuggy · 25/10/2024 16:22

A couple of times this week as I’m struggling to dry washing. Otherwise I’m not cold

xxxJess123xxx · 25/10/2024 16:31

nope, havnt needed to at all yet. first floor flat and 21c in my living room with windows slightly open in all rooms for airflow.

MumChp · 25/10/2024 16:32

Tonight we have! First this autumn.

DiscoBeat · 25/10/2024 17:05

We've had the log burner lit a few times and maybe had the heating on 4-5 times just for an hour to take the chill off.

DiscoBeat · 25/10/2024 17:08

We just spent £1200 on a tank of heating oil last week so hopefully we'll get more of the mild weather we've had so far (although I do like the cold frosty days for a dog walk!)

He wouldn’t if he knew the bill he’ll be getting!

I have a few times but mainly for the sake of drying washing. Trying to persuade DH to get an heated clothes horse thing

It's false economy - damp houses from clothes cause all sets of problems. I would just go and get a tumble dryer!

Arraminta · 25/10/2024 17:19

Is your DH already doing all the laundry and organising all the drying of said laundry himself? If not then he doesn't get to decide the best way to do the laundry. Just buy the bloody tumble dryer or heated air thingy FFS!

Pedallleur · 25/10/2024 17:23

The heated clothes airer still puts water in the air. Anyone who uses a dryer knows how much water can be in the container assuming a condenser version. Having litres of water in the house atmosphere is not good

Storybot · 25/10/2024 18:07

Wow didn't expect the casual conversation between me and DH about drying washing to cause so many MN comments 😂 I could also just carry on what I've been doing for five years without a tumble dryer or heated airer

Is this any different from just drying on a non heated airer?

We don't have the space really without shifting a load of other stuff that has nowhere to go

No but he earns the majority of the money so yea, joint decision. I don't think that's particularly weird.

It’s not really a joint decision though is it? He’s said no, so you’re not buying one. That makes it his decision.
