Who has their heating on?

Jux · 21/10/2024 19:05

I have just had cross words with dh and he has grudgingly agreed to put the heating on.

We live in a COLD house. It has had all the embellishments it can and it is freezing. I am currently in bed with the 'winter' duvet and a thick cardigan spread over that, I am wearing thermal underwear and a thick cardigan, and a scarf. I also have a cat as a heat pump! The air is icy, my hands are cold, my feet despite two pairs of socks in bed are icy.

DH says "well, you FEEL the cold, it's not colduntil it's minus 10 outside". Whereupon I shouted at him a bit and said I'd be in bed all winter.

DD is at her bf's near London. His parents have yhe heating on. Do you?

No Ne Scotland living room currently 21.we do have the advantage of being in 2nd floor flat.

c3pu · 22/10/2024 19:06

20 degrees in here, I'm on the south coast. Generally I make it until mid November before I put the heating on.

ByMerryKoala · 22/10/2024 19:08

21c here, because we have the heating on. Can't abide being cold.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 22/10/2024 19:17

Only had it on the odd hour or two here and there - but it would be on more if it was cold.

LBFseBrom · 22/10/2024 19:22

Yes I do but not high. It isn't really cold here (in London area), yet, 16C according to BBC weather. I absolutely hate being cold and as soon as it is chilly, the heating goes on.

Your husband should not object, it's your home as well as his. If he doesn't like warm rooms he can go and sit somewhere else.

PS: If your two pairs of socks are a bit tight your feet will feel cold. It's better for your circulation to have loose fitting socks.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/10/2024 19:24

During the day the thermostat is set to 18 degrees. I don't think it's been clicking on much. DH works from home and says it's warm enough for him without it clicking on. But when I come home from work after the sun goes down and there's no warming of the rooms from the sun I draw the curtains and usually turn the thermostate to 19.5 if I'm feeling chilly (which I usually am as I'm tired at the end of the day)

I feel the cold quite a lot as my limbs don't have much in the way of fat on them. (My stomach never feels the cold 😉)

But being comfortably warm is one of life's biggest yet easiest joys to achieve if you are lucky enough to have the money to put the heating on, and it's relatively easy to do with warmer clothes first of all, and then to put the heating on for a bit if you still feel cold. The only reason I would sit in bed or with multiple layers and gloves on etc is if I'm coming down with something and feel shivery with a temperature.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/10/2024 19:26

Hell yes, Central Scotland is chilly and I refuse to be cold! Been on for a while.

PorkPieForStarters · 22/10/2024 19:37

Google "WHO Housing and health guidelines" and download the PDF. The bit you need is on page 34 I think.

Will link to where you can download here but sharing the above for anyone who would rather not click a random Internet link:
https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789241550376

The World Health Organisation recommends mininum 18 degrees for healthy people and 21 for vulnerable people (eg the elderly, people with respiratory or cardio health problems).

WHO Housing and health guidelines

The guidelines emphasize the importance of collaboration between the health and other sectors and joint efforts across all government levels to promote healthy housing.

Of course! If it's cold the heating is on. If I can afford it I'm not going to sit and freeze. I find there is a particular sort of martyrdom with people where they would rather shiver or get into bed or boast about how cold their homes are. Sorry, but I'm not a martyr! And neither is the cat.

Potentiallyplausible · 22/10/2024 19:39

No, it’s not cold.

CallYourselfAChef · 22/10/2024 19:40

East Midlands, and our heating is set at 19 degrees. I like to be warm.

LlynTegid · 22/10/2024 19:42

Mine is individual to each room being an all electric property, so bedroom only and limited time so far.

Dontknowwhyidoit · 22/10/2024 19:46

Yes, it's been on for around four weeks. We have it set for around 18-20 degrees depending on the room. Husband is a farmer and used to be outside in all weathers so used to the cold but neither of us want to be uncomfortable in the house or sat with loads of layers on.

WhatTheFudges · 22/10/2024 19:49

Does it matter if other people are putting their heating or not? Fuck that. Ours has been on quite a few times, I will not be cold in my own house and have no qualms about putting the heating on regardless of the time of year or who’s doing what. I’d happily go without anything other than food to heat my house. Priority for us is mortgage, food, heating, anything else after that is a given but those 3 things cost what they cost.

Tequilamockinbird · 22/10/2024 19:49

No. It's 21.3 in my living room and toasty. Helps that the living room faces south and the sun has been shining in all day. Heating is set to come on when indoor temp drops below 17

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 22/10/2024 19:51

No but it's set to come on at 19, boosted it Saturday night after we'd been out in the evening to see some fireworks and we've used the log burner a few times already. I've decided I will not be cold and I will not let the house get cold and damp this winter and whilst it might pain me to spend more on utilities we are fortunate and can afford to

BadPeopleFan · 22/10/2024 19:55

Yep, it's been on and off since the end of August....its chilly oop North!
We've also had the wood burner on loads which manages to take the chill off most of the house without the central heating.
If you are that cold you are wrapped up in bed with layers on I can't believe your husband would argue against turning the heating on (unless there are dire financial circumstances obviously) being cold at home is awful, we should be comfortable at home. Personally I would have told your husband to get stuffed well before now.

Sunnyside4 · 22/10/2024 20:12

We did have it one 2-3x in September which is unheard of. It's been warmer the last week or so, so it's been on about 3x for 30 mins. Currently 19c in the lounge and DH currently showering upstairs and hasn't moaned its cold.

pizzaHeart · 22/10/2024 20:15

letshavetea · 21/10/2024 19:21

Goodness me! I wouldn’t even think about not having the heating on - it’s cold!!

That’s^ me too.
The picture you’ve described OP looks like a torture rather than a relaxing evening with a loving partner.
-10??? Fuck him. Sorry

Daffodilpup · 23/10/2024 11:19

No it’s currently 19.5 in my house with the back door open (about to close it as it’s raining ) and I’ve had the windows open most of the morning to air it out. Think it came on one morning a couple of weeks ago but fairly mild in the SE at the moment. Did mention to my husband that it’s the first time I can remember that we haven’t had the heating on this late in October.

DilemmaDelilah · 23/10/2024 11:53

We switched on a storage heater about 6 weeks ago, but have only turned it up a few times. It takes time to store heat, so it's not something that can be done in a sudden cold spell. We also put the underfloor heating on low in the breakfast room as that is where the cat sleeps and she has arthritis. We are all electric so no other economical options.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/10/2024 12:06

We've got the heating on a thermostat so it comes on if it's below 19C. DH was always complaining about the heating so I got Wiser TRVs for all the radiators and have it all set up so each room is only heated when we are in it. DH has not bothered to learn how to control the heating so now it's all up to me and I have no desire to be cold. So that's an option 😂.

But if you have a heart problem you absolutely will need the house kept warm, you will feel much colder than your DH because of your health condition and he should respect that.

GoGoGoFigureItOut · 23/10/2024 12:40

We usually try to hang on until the last weekend of October, as we usually have friends round for a Halloween movie night and I hate the thought of guests being cold. After that, it will be on every day for an hour in the morning and an hour or two in the evening.

Our flat gets very cold (we have porcelain floor tiles throughout- fine in summer, not so nice in winter) and I work from home so would love to have it on more but the cost is restrictive.

We have had to have it on a couple of times in the last month or so as my partner works outside and we needed to dry his work clothes quickly, but in general, we don't have it on until the end of October. I must say, I'm looking forward to putting it on at the weekend though!

KnittedCardi · 23/10/2024 12:44

Of course, it's been cold and damp. We have had some lovely sunny days too, and heating doesn't come on, but when it's grey and raining or foggy or cold, the heating clicks on. We keep it around the 20c mark. Off at night though.

Built up a nice cushion of credit over the summer, so I don't worry about it now.

Swissrollover · 23/10/2024 13:07

Yes, it's been on regularly for a few weeks now. It is often warmer outdoors than inside the North facing rooms of my house.

OP, if you don't wear something similar already, I thoroughly recommend getting a pair of fluffy lined snow boots to wear indoors as slippers. You can get them online quite cheaply. With at least one pair of thermal socks, my feet stay toasty.
