My daughter is in labour and I'm a mess of emotion

As above. My adult daughter is in labour with her first baby, her partner is with her, and I will get updates from time to time.
I won't be mithering them for updates, I'm happy to hear whenever they choose to update, including if they wait until baby comes, but I'm a mess of emotion and worry. I just hope all goes well for her and the baby and it's not too awful.
She's been in early stages of labour since early this morning, has been up to the hospital and sent home again. She says she's doing ok.
Just sharing on here as I have nobody around at the moment to share with, and hoping that some can understand my emotions at my lovely daughter now being in the process of birthing her own child.
I can remember my labour and her birth so well, as if it was yesterday. I was in labour a long time, and she was born at home (as intended).
Feeling quite teary at the moment with the wonder of it all.

I lost a lot of blood. I had to inject myself with iron every day for 2 weeks I think, it wasn't a big deal.

Surprisingly common, and she’s in the best place she can be. Might need some infusions, some supplements going forward for a while, but overall, she should be absolutely fine!

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/10/2024 16:28

I lost about a litre, was kept in but nothing else really happened other than me needing to (get DH to) inject clexane every day for I think a week.

The one overriding thing I remember about the birth is a woman arriving with a mop bucket! I don't recall exactly how the stopped the bleeding but it happened very quickly.

Projectme · 22/10/2024 16:29

Oo blimey...ive had a tear in my eye reading just your updates.

Massive congratulations to all of you. Isnt your DD blimmin amazing!!!

I thought your new granddaughter was called Imogen?🤔

She is called Imogen. I can hardly think I am so tired, sorry.
Isabel was a name they were also considered. I like Imogen better to be honest so am glad they went with that one, although Isabel is lovely too

My daughter messaged and told me she lost a litre of blood in the birth and is being kept in over night for observations. Feel shocked to hear this, I know blood loss is normal but is this a lot?
Can anyone reassure me that she wasn't at significant risk with this?
And will she be ok now?
I know she will be receiving good medical care

A litre is a fair amount but its not anything to panic about. She'll be well cared for with appropriate drugs, and she might get a blood transfusion depending on the results of blood tests. She might feel a bit 'wabbit' with it, especially combined with a long labour, so facilitating good meals and sleep for her is top priority for you + her dh

Loving this thread, the world can be such a grim place but reading about the arrival of Imogen and knowing how loved and treasured she is going to be is very uplifting. My child had the most beautiful bond with their grandmother, it is a very special relationship. She used to write to them, little short stories about their teddy bear and her cat going on adventures together!

That's so lovely. I am so looking forward to the lovely things I can do with her as she grows. I'm not likely to be the most physically active Gran as I have some health challenges but there are so many cosy things we can do together such as baking, crafts and reading stories etc. I can't wait

Congratulations, such happy news. What a long wait.
I hope your daughter recovers quickly and isn’t too tired.

I was going to be a grandma too this year and was so excited but both times sadly it didn’t work out so give little Imogen a hug from me (and the other MNetters too as we have been waiting with you .

LBFseBrom · 22/10/2024 18:05

Marvellous news! I'm glad it is all over and both are doing well. Imogen is a lovely name, classic. Congratulations to you, Granny! :-)

Thank you so much (again) for sharing.

It's my baby's first birthday today. I am missing this story in my family so it's extra lovely to witness it today.
Well done to your DD! Your DGD is born into a family of strong women for sure.

Horses7 · 22/10/2024 19:09

I was worried all through my daughter’s pregnancy and especially during labour, all went well in the end but she did have an emergency section.
She didn’t know I was worried btw! I hid it well! It’s great having a grandchild but I’ll probably be the same if she has another. Also it was my daughter I was worried not the baby - but then I didn’t know the baby at the time!

Horses7 · 22/10/2024 19:09

Ps congratulations x

Thanks everyone, your comments are reassuring. I'm sure she will be fine and she is in the best place.
Going to chill now and do some crochet for Isabel, I'm working on a cot blanket.
I'll probably not come back to this thread again as it's run it's course, but thank you all for sharing this momentous time with me, I've really appreciated it.

Hearty congratulations op x

Moll2020 · 22/10/2024 19:46

I’ll be the same as you in 9 weeks! My eldest daughter is expecting her first baby, my first grandchild 💕🍼💕🍼. I’ll be an emotional wreck xx

katienana · 22/10/2024 22:05

I lost 1.5 litres of blood. I needed a transfusion and it did take a while before I felt well but I was able to breastfeed straight away. My mum helped me to have a bath and wash my hair. She also made me a chocolate cake and a big beef casserole! Lots of orange juice is needed too if iron tablets are prescribed.
You sound like a lovely mum ❤️

MrsMacGyver · 22/10/2024 22:23

So happy for you OP. Welcome Imogen 😊 💕 I am sitting in a cafe in Australia - I am so happy for you. Someone commented on my smile - the rest of the cafe say congratulations OP x

Congratulations OP, I've only just seen this thread and just wanted to say I became a nanna for the first time just over a week ago to baby Emmie. I'm also sat in bed currently crocheting a cot blanket, lol. What a wonderful feeling it is becoming a grandparent, something I've wanted for a long time. Hope mum and baby are both well x
