Do you believe in guardian "angels"?

To be clear, I'm an atheist. Don't believe in ghosts etc. But I have always felt that something "unworldly" was looking after me, particularly when I was in my 20s. It sounds nuts I know. Can't really explain why I feel this way. Maybe I've just been lucky in certain aspects, particularly education and work.

I've been having a really tough time lately (bereavement, anxiety etc). And decided to try and tap into that feeling again

I'm currently selling a house. It's not getting any viewings (about 3 in 2 months). It's getting me down in a bad way. Whilst I was walking my dog, I asked out loud that when I returned home I would like the estate agent to email with a viewing. Got home, sat down with phone. About 30 seconds later an email notification popped up for a viewing. First one for ages. Just a coincidence I suppose.

Two days later I was driving to a car boot sale and I asked out loud that I would like to find a particular collection of vintage books. When I got to the boot sale it was really small. But there on one stall was a box of these books in mint condition (50p each). I couldn't believe it.

Again probably a coincidence but do you believe in guardian angels or something like that?

Yep, pretty much.

Well at least we can agree on that.

So I guess religion is also null and void then because God would have to be an evil shit to let Ukraine etc happen?

But why do you ask? You yourself are atheist.

Of course, the faithful or not, everyone faces pain, no one is immune from it. It’s a very human condition. And I never specifically said that other people suffer more because they didn't pray hard enough. The point I was trying to make is why have your prayers been answered but not mine, despite the fact that we believe in the same god (I don’t)? Coming from a staunchly religious background, I’ve had many a person tell me to just trust god, to not stop praying to “him”, to keep praying “with all my heart”, because many religious people (not all) believe this is how their prayers are answered. So when something good happens, they would say to me, see my prayers have been answered, or god protected me in this and that situation, just keeping praying, and believe with all your heart.

Thanks for your reply.

It feels like a slight derail from the original post to talk too much about religion specifically, although guardian angels do fall within that for some people. But to answer as best I can, firstly I'm not sure if the logic of asking why your prayers aren't answered since you also say you don't believe - or is this from a time when you did? I don't know the circumstances of your life but I hope you feel you have some things to be thankful for, even if you don't credit any supernatural entity.
If you're asking more generally about why bad things happen, including to people who do pray and believe, that is a perennial question really and I think we all find our own answers, for some people atheism is more logical, or an indifferent God. I believe that the existence of suffering doesn't negate the goodness of God but others disagree and can be pretty dogged about chasing for answers (not suggesting this is you) but I tend to prefer to agree to disagree. There are certain Christian theological teachings around this that you are probably already aware of given your background.

@Yourbodyyourchoice that's a lovely thing to say, thank you.

Actually, yes.

WitchesButter · 21/10/2024 20:03

I believe in the power of positive thought. I'd love to believe in guardian angels. I've been very fortunate in many ways. I've asked for things that have happened the same day. I've never won the lottery though 😕

dermalermalurd · 21/10/2024 22:27

Nope. It's not exactly conducive to atheism, OP. Are you sure you know what atheism is?

Angelchick1971 · 21/10/2024 22:50

When I was at my lowest ever point in my life....approx 16yrs ago I got up one morning and found this on my window. I believe it's an angel and I've been a believer ever since

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 21/10/2024 22:53

No.. if there is such a thing, mine needs to retrain or be sacked.

You just have to look at the world to realise that it's a load of crap.

Maybe there are angels but they can only help with very minor things so can’t be relied on when the chips are down. It would be a bit shit if they are organising the perfect car boot over watching over orphans in Palestine or the Ukraine if they did have more power really.

lol

What's important in one person's life, probably has no meaning in other person's life. We don't live in a war zone so yes maybe less mundane things are more important.

No need to take the piss though is there?

Not taking the piss. It's just amusing to think of a guardian angel tampering with a boot sale.

Well, sure - but why would they (to use a PP's example) save her from a massive car accident but not any of the other people involved?

Why would they not save the people of Ukraine from being bombed or killed even though that's not happening in other countries?

It makes no sense.

But then what about the thousands, millions of people, throughout time, up to the present, being killed and murdered, in unimaginable suffering, through war and similar? Do you think any of them had guardian angels? Because they didn’t help these people avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I think for me, this is what made me stop believing in god, and other similar kind of „”spiritual” forces. If I pray my leg pain away, it’s proof god is good and „”he’s” or my „”guardian angel” is looking out for me. And yet at exactly the same time there’s been a massacre, somewhere in the world, as part of the many wars currently ongoing, where hundreds/thousands of innocent people have been killed, who probably may have believed in a god or guardian angel themselves, who prayed for help. So why did god or the angels cure my knee pain, but not save these innocents from their own horrific death?

I think it just doesn't always work sadly.

I'm not arguing my belief is definitely true and Im not trying to convert anyone, I just like to believe in them and believe it's possible.

Yes I do struggle to believe in God for this reason, though I like the idea of faith.

CurlewKate · 23/10/2024 13:12

I think guardian angels are the same as prayer and homeopathy. Excellent at sorting out vague unspecified illnesses and things which were already on the brink of getting better.

UYN · 23/10/2024 21:03

It's not even really a question about whether people think they definitely exist.

If you want them to exist, and it makes your life better to believe in a guardian angel, then go ahead.

We've all gotta get through this life somehow.

BluebirdBoogie · 23/10/2024 21:07

Nope. No such thing.
