Do you believe in guardian "angels"?

To be clear, I'm an atheist. Don't believe in ghosts etc. But I have always felt that something "unworldly" was looking after me, particularly when I was in my 20s. It sounds nuts I know. Can't really explain why I feel this way. Maybe I've just been lucky in certain aspects, particularly education and work.

I've been having a really tough time lately (bereavement, anxiety etc). And decided to try and tap into that feeling again

I'm currently selling a house. It's not getting any viewings (about 3 in 2 months). It's getting me down in a bad way. Whilst I was walking my dog, I asked out loud that when I returned home I would like the estate agent to email with a viewing. Got home, sat down with phone. About 30 seconds later an email notification popped up for a viewing. First one for ages. Just a coincidence I suppose.

Two days later I was driving to a car boot sale and I asked out loud that I would like to find a particular collection of vintage books. When I got to the boot sale it was really small. But there on one stall was a box of these books in mint condition (50p each). I couldn't believe it.

Again probably a coincidence but do you believe in guardian angels or something like that?

So why hasn't my DD got that? Why is her physical and mental health so bad she can't work or volunteer? Why did she find her Dad dead at 10?
Why am I still in rented at 61? Why were both my ex husbands bastards?

Why would some people get a GA and not others?

I don't know.😔 Life most definitely isn't fair. Maybe try what I did, ask out loud for one thing. Be very specific about what it is you want, and when you need it to happen.

Just want to say, this topic is fascinating and thank you for all your answers. I was expecting a roasting!

But what has them being male bosses got to do with any of your apparent employment and further education opportunities? And so in these scenarios would you actually attribute your successes because something other worldly was looking out for you, as per your original post, or was it because you were happy go smiley and so your male bosses gave you those opportunities, because of your sunny disposition?

I’m sorry, NO. Think of all the people who are in terrible situations of suffering all over the world. Are their guardian angels on holiday? It’s confirmation bias, intuition and wishful thinking, I’m afraid. We’re on our own, folks.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/10/2024 09:43

No. Sometimes lovely coincidences happen to my benefit, but ultimately I'm the master of my own destiny.

I often have a specific book in mind before I trawl the charity shops and sometimes I'll hit lucky. It's just bad luck if it's nowhere to be found, it's not my guardian angel having a day off. I don't deserve all the luck!

Tgitdfvjiit345 · 21/10/2024 09:32

This is very true. I think I got jobs and further education chances because my (male😵‍💫) bosses liked me.

I definitely think I have a guardian angel. Sometimes things happen that don't make sense or annoy me at the time .... but they seem to happen for a reason. I'm not religious but if I was, I'd say God moves in mysterious ways.

My strangest experience was when I was at a party in my 20s. I was standing at the top of the stairs, drunk, when I somehow fell. I went head over heels and landed firmly on my feet at the bottom, like a gymnast. There was a curve mark on the stairs wall where my boots had marked it as I'd flipped over. I'm not particularly athletic and certainly have never done gymnastics. I think my guardian angel assisted a safe landing. I could have done myself a serious injury.

That was The Beer Stretcher, not a guardian angel.

Nonsense, loads of people ask for help, pray for help; they don't get it. Do you think people in war zones don't ask for help to a higher being? Do you think people that are ill, or in serious trouble don't pray to be saved? You just do it better do you? One day everybody on this thread will realise it doesn't matter how much you ask, you can't be saved by a fantasy, how ever much you ask out loud.

I think I was lucky that in particular male bosses liked me. Kind of felt that they were looking after me. I can't really explain it. I'm very shy, so it wasn't my sunny disposition. And there were better candidates for sure. Could be lucky, could be something unworldly....I'm saying I don't know.

I remember at my first job at a pharmaceutical company, we used to work with consultants that would come in and do a few days work and get paid 5 times what we did. I remember saying I wish I was a consultant getting paid so well and working from home. Soon after that I saw a job in another pharma company, which I got. That lead to redundancy but I set myself up as a consultant and yes I got paid well and was able to work part time from home (long before working from home became more common). Maybe I just got lucky.

No need to get angry with me. I'm not even saying I have a guardian angel, I'm saying that I've felt at times that somehow things have worked out in just the way I wanted.

As I said could be coincidence or luck or something....

There's no guardian angels. No Jesus, no psychics (before that shit starts) No nothing. If you believe in any of it or 'hearing voices' get help.

What you mean is ‘ none for me, by my will’.

By the way, ‘no nothing’ is a contradiction in terms, so what you have actually written is ‘something’

Maybe someone was looking over your shoulder…..

Tgitdfvjiit345 · 21/10/2024 11:06

Well I could well become disillusioned and very disappointed with it later.

I've asked for an offer to come through on the house today. 🙏 Desperately need a sale soon.

Of course not.

IMO, there's something quite unpleasant about believing that you were somehow worthy of help from a "higher power" when children who die from cancer or grow up in war zones never receive any kind of spiritual support or cure 🤷‍♀️

So we'll all die as atheists (or not believing in angels/higher powers etc?) I'm not aware that this is such a universal thing.

OneDandyPoet · 21/10/2024 11:56

It’s always interesting with this kind of discussion, the faithful believers, and absolutely nothing wrong with that, but when asked why their beliefs and prayers have been answered (and additionally used as some kind of proof that some kind of god exists), but not the prayers, and calls for help, from millions of other people, going through horrific pain, suffering death, the answer is often that is gods plan, or that perhaps they haven’t prayed hard enough. I just can’t get my head around that.

You've not read the thread properly or are you just deliberately being argumentative?

I can’t say I believe in them, but I have had cause to wonder, twice.

First, in my 20s, when the brakes on my old Mini failed completely only seconds after I was driving down a fairly steep hill right behind a big lorry.

Decades later, driving down the M3 to visit my elderly mother, when literally as I passed them, a car in the outside lane ploughed into the car in front at such speed, that it ended up half on top of it.
I missed a pile up by the merest whisker.

This was not in direct reference to you. I just observed that often in these kind of discussions, inevitably this kind of reasoning comes up as an answer when asked why someone’s prayer was answered, but not some body else’s, despite both individuals believing in the same god.

GoldCat255 · 21/10/2024 12:17

And you call yourself an atheist?
Don't be ridiculous.

MsYamada · 21/10/2024 12:19

Last night I had a weird dream and looked at one of those on-line dream dictionaries to see if it meant anything. The site popped up a 'free reading from your guardian angel'. I didn't do it, but I flipped to Mumsnet for a browse before work and this was the first post I came across. Coincidence probably, but quite a nice one.

What were the guardian angels of the people in the other cars up to?
