Do you believe in guardian "angels"?

To be clear, I'm an atheist. Don't believe in ghosts etc. But I have always felt that something "unworldly" was looking after me, particularly when I was in my 20s. It sounds nuts I know. Can't really explain why I feel this way. Maybe I've just been lucky in certain aspects, particularly education and work.

I've been having a really tough time lately (bereavement, anxiety etc). And decided to try and tap into that feeling again

I'm currently selling a house. It's not getting any viewings (about 3 in 2 months). It's getting me down in a bad way. Whilst I was walking my dog, I asked out loud that when I returned home I would like the estate agent to email with a viewing. Got home, sat down with phone. About 30 seconds later an email notification popped up for a viewing. First one for ages. Just a coincidence I suppose.

Two days later I was driving to a car boot sale and I asked out loud that I would like to find a particular collection of vintage books. When I got to the boot sale it was really small. But there on one stall was a box of these books in mint condition (50p each). I couldn't believe it.

Again probably a coincidence but do you believe in guardian angels or something like that?

No, I don't. And not in a 'No, life sucks and I'm unlucky' way. I've generally been very fortunate in life. But that's because of luck and opportunity, not anything other-worldly. It's great that those things worked out for you, OP, but I wouldn't view them as anything other than luck, coincidence and confirmation bias. If you very regularly 'ask out loud' for things, I imagine you'll find most of them don't happen.

SallyWD · 21/10/2024 07:52

The rational part of ne says no, but I have often felt like someone or something is looking out for me.

AuntieMarys · 21/10/2024 08:03

No.
But I don't believe in heaven, afterlife or anything like that.

I don't believe in them but I wish I did.

Jellybeanbag · 21/10/2024 08:13

Yes, 100%

There have been a number of occasions where I was guided to a place and I had no understanding why. All three of those occasions saved my life or the life of another.

I am not crazy, overly religious or anything else! But I do notice many things that others might not, I consider myself spiritual.

ThoraZ · 21/10/2024 08:22

No. If there were such a thing as guardian angels, why would they exist for you to find second hand books and not for people who are actually suffering or in danger?
I’m not assuming anything about you, but I think you would probably have to have had a fairly fortunate life to believe this. I was once looking at something in a shop that I really wanted but had no money, left the shop and found the exact amount on the pavement outside, but it didn’t occur to me that I had a guardian angel. Otherwise surely they would have shown up at some stage when I was a neglected kid living in an abusive household so scared I used to say the rosary every night asking god to help me (he didn’t either).
Sorry, that took a dark turn but I’m sure you get my point.

Sortumn · 21/10/2024 08:25

Not particularly angels but I do believe there's a thread of flow, or wellbeing that we can access and should be connected with all the time but are frequently blocked from.

Atheism is not a religion, nor a belief system.. It means just one thing - that there is a lack of belief in god/gods. Essentially that’s it. But this doesn’t necessarily have to make you a sceptic, in regards to other things. I’ve met committed atheists who believe that there could be an afterlife, or other dimension, or that the phenomenon of ghosts could be real. But which has nothing to do with a divine being of any kind. So who knows what’s out there?!

WTAFisthisnonsense · 21/10/2024 08:32

It's nonsense.
If not, where are the angels to protect children killed in war zones everyday? Or women beaten to death for wearing the clothes they choose, or men thrown from buildings because they are gay?

Exactly.

It’s a lovely idea but if guardian angels did exist, they should be working overtime for the women of Afghanistan.

OneDandyPoet · 21/10/2024 08:37

This is so true. Humanity over any kind of god or similar, every single time. Can you imagine what an amazing place this world would be if we channeled all the devotion and faith onto ourselves, and others, onto humanity, instead of to this invisible demanding god, that we have been brainwashed to worship? The world would be a much better place.

Augustus40 · 21/10/2024 08:41

I think they may exist but I have not felt or noticed any clear signs they do.

Furthermore Law of Attractio simply does not work. That is for naive gullible people.

Woollypullover · 21/10/2024 08:42

Of course not.

Helpnifoseeker · 21/10/2024 08:52

I believe in the existence of angels, including guardians. I'm a Catholic and the existence of angels is a teaching of the Faith. I have experience of my guardian helping me out similar to yours, but they're not genies or fairy Godmothers, they're messengers of God. I'm going through a very stressful time too, and what keeps popping into my head is "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God", as a fully formed thought as if put there by someone else! I believe it's my guardian angle telling me this, so I have upped my game prayer-wise and have been able to get a bit further forward in what I have to do.
It's lovely that your guardian is helping you out, remember to thank him and don't be thinking your nuts, you're far from it!

OneDandyPoet · 21/10/2024 08:52

Itssodark · 20/10/2024 21:49

Yes I believe in them. But i think the references you make are coincidences.

I believe a guardian angel will do things like help you avoid something that could kill you ie avoiding the wrong place at the wrong time. I think they give you the strength you need to do difficult things like give up smoking for example.

I think that sometimes things happen for a reason (but not always).

But then what about the thousands, millions of people, throughout time, up to the present, being killed and murdered, in unimaginable suffering, through war and similar? Do you think any of them had guardian angels? Because they didn’t help these people avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I think for me, this is what made me stop believing in god, and other similar kind of „”spiritual” forces. If I pray my leg pain away, it’s proof god is good and „”he’s” or my „”guardian angel” is looking out for me. And yet at exactly the same time there’s been a massacre, somewhere in the world, as part of the many wars currently ongoing, where hundreds/thousands of innocent people have been killed, who probably may have believed in a god or guardian angel themselves, who prayed for help. So why did god or the angels cure my knee pain, but not save these innocents from their own horrific death?

KungFuKitten · 21/10/2024 08:56

I think that positive happy go lucky smiley people get an easier ride in life because they are generally liked and people will look after and open doors for people they like and give them opportunities Also their faults and mistakes are glossed over . When bad times come likeable people are helped and supported. Likeable people don't tend to attract nasty negative people . So I think being likeable attracts positive things into your life as opposed to having a Gaurdian angel

Augustus40 · 21/10/2024 08:57

Religion is a palliative for the misguided. Just my view. For those who need a crutch.

I believe in a spiritual force karma and reincarnation but not in any specific faith.

Helpnifoseeker · 21/10/2024 09:09

You're right that it's God- angels work for God, their only power is from Him and they're totally devoted to Him so only act with His permission.

Greyrockin · 21/10/2024 09:22

Well I’ve had parents, grandparents and siblings die when I was very young and not one ‘angel’ fecker is guarding me, so no, I don’t believe in guardian angels 😂

Greyrockin · 21/10/2024 09:23

I’m catholic too, but not led by blind faith.

Maybe the guardian angels of their enemies are stronger than theirs.

Sarah Everard’s guardian angel clearly wasn’t up to much.

I completely believe in what you're saying. I'm not sure I'd call it a guardian angel but it's definitely a thing that I've found where I've asked for help or for an answer toll something and it's appeared. I always thank whoever / whatever it is that looks after me and has made things happen for me. I think of it as the universe looking after me because what I wanted must also have been the right thing for someone else. Not sure if this makes sense but I believe in the concept of what you're saying definitely being true.

This is exactly the feeling I get.

The two instances I mentioned are just very recent ones. They may seem trivial but the house selling is really important to me and causing considerable stress.

The estate agent email pop up actually made me gasp.

I have no answer for that. I'm just giving my experience.

This is very true. I think I got jobs and further education chances because my (male😵‍💫) bosses liked me.
