Do you believe in guardian "angels"?

To be clear, I'm an atheist. Don't believe in ghosts etc. But I have always felt that something "unworldly" was looking after me, particularly when I was in my 20s. It sounds nuts I know. Can't really explain why I feel this way. Maybe I've just been lucky in certain aspects, particularly education and work.

I've been having a really tough time lately (bereavement, anxiety etc). And decided to try and tap into that feeling again

I'm currently selling a house. It's not getting any viewings (about 3 in 2 months). It's getting me down in a bad way. Whilst I was walking my dog, I asked out loud that when I returned home I would like the estate agent to email with a viewing. Got home, sat down with phone. About 30 seconds later an email notification popped up for a viewing. First one for ages. Just a coincidence I suppose.

Two days later I was driving to a car boot sale and I asked out loud that I would like to find a particular collection of vintage books. When I got to the boot sale it was really small. But there on one stall was a box of these books in mint condition (50p each). I couldn't believe it.

Again probably a coincidence but do you believe in guardian angels or something like that?

I believe in guardian angels, that figure in the corner of your eye
However, for those that don't, I describe it as 'the universe provides '

At my worst points, I've asked and someone has answered.

Tel12 · 20/10/2024 23:08

No. But then again when I've had a near miss I do thank my GA, just in case.

fraya123 · 20/10/2024 23:11

I feel same at times..for me, I think it's god, not a guardian angel. Xxx

I definitely believe in guardian angels, I have had a life/death experience in which I believe an angel saved my life.

Yourbodyyourchoice · 20/10/2024 23:15

I think most people have experienced a weird coincidence/s at one time or another. If there was such a thing as a greater being watching over, than why would they only save some people and not others? There is far too much bad in the world for this to be true.

Lovely idea though, I wish it were true.

Usou · 20/10/2024 23:15

Lorna Byrne has written extensively on the subject of GAs.

Personally, I've had multiple scrapes and close shaves where I've definitely thought that someone or something was looking out for me. I wondered if it might be my deceased parents or relatives or a GA - any or all of rhem would be fine.

I say thanks anyway.

Not since I was about 7.

StMarieforme · 20/10/2024 23:17

So why hasn't my DD got that? Why is her physical and mental health so bad she can't work or volunteer? Why did she find her Dad dead at 10?
Why am I still in rented at 61? Why were both my ex husbands bastards?

Why would some people get a GA and not others?

GauntJudy · 20/10/2024 23:18

I vary. Sometimes I think in terms of "the universe" steering things. I'll say a little thank you when things work out well for me.

But sometimes I recognise that I only think this way cos I live in the privileged developed world, where things mostly go well for me, and my worst days would be someone else's best day. Why would the universe/angels/God subject them to daily horrors? Life is probably a random lottery made either tolerable or awful by your environment.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 20/10/2024 23:19

I've said two very serious and desperate 'please help me, please can this be wrong, please can things be ok' in the last few years and they have both been granted. X

This is exactly what I was hinting at not long before your post. Bad things can happen to good people, and good things to bad. Guardian angels are a safety blanket fantasy that some use to comfort them in times of need. It is a bit shit to admit that actually we are very likely all alone, going to die and then it all ends with your consciousness gone off the face of the earth, and it being like before you were born. IMO people turn to religion, faith, paranormal, guardian angels, an afterlife etc, it is easier than the alternative.

Sorry about your dd💐 You are her guardian angel, not some mythical apparition.

CitizenZ · 20/10/2024 23:31

There's no guardian angels. No Jesus, no psychics (before that shit starts) No nothing. If you believe in any of it or 'hearing voices' get help.

LightDrizzle · 20/10/2024 23:35

No.

Whoknowswhatanymore · 20/10/2024 23:43

YES.

changedusernameforthis1 · 20/10/2024 23:45

I'm on the fence. My Nana was the closest person to me, and I was devasted when she passed in my teens.
One night I asked her for a sign she was still around, and not long after found a single white feather on the kitchen floor. Thought maybe it was from a pillow or came in through the window, so asked for a bigger sign.
The next morning I had a Dr's appointment, and when I left the house there were so many white feathers all over the front path. I tried to explain it to myself by saying it was a bird that got attacked, but there was no blood.

It's a comforting thought, but I can't say for sure if I believe in them completely.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 20/10/2024 23:51

No. But I do believe in sheer luck and amazingly unlikely coincidences and acting on instinct working in your favour at times of potential or real danger.

So rather than feeling that a guardian angel was looking out for me when I was able to slam the brakes on half a second before crashing the car, I’d put it down to sheer bloody luck or my instinct and adrenal meaning I avoided crashing. Or if I’d accidentally left my house door open and gone out and come back to find nothing had been stolen, I’d just think I’d been extremely fortunate, rather than feeling someone/something was looking out for me.

SisterAgatha · 21/10/2024 00:28

No not generally and I have reason to, having lost a parent young. People say about robins and feathers but it’s usually a pigeon nearby caught by a fox etc…. Anyway I have been lucky in my life really, considering the seriously shit start.

But, one day me and my friend got caught in some ice on the motorway. The car spun around twice at 60mph. We didn’t scream, just calm and I remember thinking “it’s going to hurt in a minute, get ready” and I swear it felt like something guided the car back on to the road in the right direction. And we just carried on driving and crying and fully believing “something” had saved us.

UYN · 21/10/2024 00:32

I'm not really sure what's out there in the parts of the ether we can't detect.

But I love that story about the guardian angel and the footprints in the sand. It's just beautiful.

mathanxiety · 21/10/2024 01:46

I do. I'm a Catholic though.

Viviennemary · 21/10/2024 05:03

No. It's a nice idea though.

rainydaysandrainbows · 21/10/2024 05:29

I don't believe because you hear of so many horrific things happening in humanity I kind of feel why would a rational guardian angel be spending time helping me with my stuff when I would think they'd have their work cut out in other parts of the world right now.

CurlewKate · 21/10/2024 06:24

I believe in coincidence and in correlation not causation. And in cognitive bias.

But I'm glad you got what you wanted, @Tgitdfvjiit345-especially the books! I would be so excited if that happened to me.

Obsessedwithsourdough · 21/10/2024 06:30

Yes I do believe in them. I also had a very strange experience once.

AceofPentacles · 21/10/2024 07:25

Not angels but a helping hand for sure.

I was lying awake at 3am with excruciating dental abscess and had taken maximum pain killers hours before. I asked out loud please take this pain away so I can sleep. Five minutes later it had completely gone.

I've had other more serious instances where I have been at rock bottom and asked for help, and received it from "coincidences".
