What would stop you travelling to/from events etc. alone?

Friend has proposed a London get together for a group of us that met as young people in our hometown. The distance to travel into London varies from 20-60 mins. 3 of the group live in our hometown and would normally travel together by train to any London based meets by direct fast train. Only one of the 3 can make it this time and she’s said she can’t travel by train or drive up on her own and her partner can’t accompany her that day so won’t come this time.

It’s got me wondering whether this is something other women worry about. I’m not single, but often travel to visit friends or family and when DH has had spells of working abroad, I’ve flown out to join him for a few days.

How many of you don’t like to travel alone?

I travel alone or with people. I must admit I don't think about it. Maybe she's had a bad past experience.

Why? Are you doing a research paper? What limits my horizons going to London? Can't be arsed. Train is cancelled. Weather is shite. Don't have lift at the other end... to name a few.

Perhaps she just fancied a discussion. It is a discussion forum.

In terms of travelling alone I travel all over the U.K. alone and flown internationally to visit family or meet people I’m going on holiday with.

Haven’t done solo holiday yet. Something puts me off. Think I need to just get in and do it.

Well I think I have contributed to the discussion a bit. In answer to what you think about travelling solo, my answer would be - it doesn't worry me in terms of anxiety. What does worry me is:

  • it can take an age to drive anywhere (I use M25 a lot) because if a lorry bursts into flames like it did this morning, expect to reach your destination close to midnight
  • if you're on the train, you may have to stand the whole way or, worse, it's cancelled and not another in sight for forseeable future
  • on a plane (as I was the other week to Spain) - long delays both there and back. Some poor guy threw up a lot in a bag
  • may try and chance the ferry but still got to drive etc
But mostly it's because, as I've said: Travelling today is generally and arse - more of an arse if the weather's shite and there's no-one to pick you up at the other end. I need a good reason to travel these days. 😎

Just curious as to why you read threads and get so annoyed by them. You could do something else instead. Or do the adult thing and not type such shite

Not annoyed at all. I've just given quite a long response about what I think about travelling solo in answer to the OP's question. I could be doing other things, it's true but I'm putting them off. Ever done that? Personally, I don't think 'being solo' is the issue. It's the general 'arsiness' of travel itself. Being stuck in a 4-hour traffic jam could be marginally better if someone else is with you. Depends who it was though. Could be awful. Hope that's not too shite....
