Liam Payne Funeral

Read online that Liam Payne’s funeral could be as big as Princess Diana’s - not sure how true this is.

Don’t get me wrong I think it’ll be a large public gathering for sure…. Unless the family decide to have a more private service unannounced with just family and friends etc..

Of course it won't be and it absolutely shouldn't be. He was not the most famous man that ever lived and I can't say I'd heard of him doing anything of note in some time. His family and friends need to do their mourning in private and the Instagram generation need to stop trying to muscle in and hijack every single thing that ever happens.

Using “the Instagram generation” to describe your distaste for the frenetic, 24 hour news cycle, everything being microblogged, everything being streamed, is a bit like using “millenial” when you wanna describe a young person lol. Most of us are closer to 40 than 30. Other than that I totally agree with you and find it wild that a site where nominative determinism suggests quite a few people are mums themselves, that Cheryl Cole’s words seem to have gone in one ear and out the other

RitaConnors · 19/10/2024 23:59

the comments saying they didn’t even know who he was. what’s the point in commenting that?

I agree there isn't any point on other threads about this but on this one it's relevant.
I can't imagine in 1997 that there were many people who didn't know who Princess Diana was. The Royal Family was even more of a big deal then than it is now.

In my family...

My mother hasn't heard of him or the band.
I've heard of 1D but I could only name Harry Styles.
My husband hasn't heard of them at all.
My 20 year old knew who he was and was shocked and sad
My 16 year old didn't know who he was but knows 1D.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 20/10/2024 00:00

Of course it won't be bigger than Diana's, ridiculous thought. We've lost huge stars over the years. George Michael, Bowie, Amy Winehouse and loads more.

It's terribly sad than this young man has died, my d is very upset as a 1D fan and I'm very sorry for his close one's.

I imagine it'll be a private funeral, fans will line the streets and the press will be there taking intrusive pictures.

I hope Liam is at peace as I hope any troubled, deceased person is.

no im not agreeing it’s the same scale - but the comments saying they didn’t even know who he was. what’s the point in commenting that?

I agree. In fact he was probably upset that he had just been dropped by his record company and wasn’t so successful with his solo work so to say ‘never heard of him’ seems bad taste and pointless

Do you have any critical thinking skills at all? Do you read books? Do you believe everything you read online?

What @flapjackfairy said. Was he the Queen of People's Hearts as well?

It's very sad that a young father, son, brother and friend has died long before his time and in a horrible way. It's sad for his fans, too. But unless he was far more entwined with the culture of the nation than I knew about, his funeral (and the impact of his death) Will unequivocally not be "bigger than Princess Diana's".

Come on now, read the things you've written before you hit the post button.

FrancisSeaton · 20/10/2024 00:07

Whilst I wouldn't say he was a minor pop star he's only really going to be known to/ mourned by fans. Princess Diana was known worldwide to most people.
It's not remotely comparable

exactly. he comes from a normal family. normal parents. normal sisters. etc. how do yous know his sisters don’t use this site?? it’s not that far fetched. they’re normal human beings too. why put him down when he was already clearly very depressed and feeling alone

The OP got me thinking about the funeral of Princess Diana. It is the biggest in living memory (I'd go as far to say it's the biggest funeral ever, as I cannot think of another before her that comes remotely close). It was mania.

The most famous woman on the planet, in an era where media was infinitely more concentrated than it is now (pre internet), she didn't share the spotlight she dominated it.

The rewritten "Candle in the Wind" sold 33 million physical copies globally (in terms of physical sales it is the biggest selling record ever, and all sold within a month), and it charted at #1 all over the world.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candle_in_the_Wind_1997#Weekly_charts

To this day I have never known a week like the one following her death to the day of the funeral. It was surreal. No one person has ever taken over everything like that. Newspapers (from the front page to about the middle pages all about her), television shows dominated by her. Wall to wall coverage. And the flowers, my God you could have filled a field with those stacked outside Kensington Palace.

The internet era folks got a wee taste of a large event with the Queen's death, but nothing remotely close to the scale of Diana. We won't ever see anything like that again as its impossible for anything to be that concentrated on one individual with the media being so much broader with audiences spread out.

Was it bigger than the Queen's?

The collective madness was.

friendlycat · 20/10/2024 00:14

The media coverage in the trashy tabloids is completely out of hand on this issue.

It’s sad that a member of a former boy band has died. But one article would be sufficient to announce this.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/10/2024 00:15

Funny how we’re talking about Princess Di- Harry anyone?

Houseplanter · 19/10/2024 23:20

It is tragic that a young man has died in such awful circumstances. Genuinely terrible.

But the only people who are really 'devastated' and 'heartbroken' are his family and friends.

Fans of One Direction claiming to be have (IMO) no idea of how it feels to be devastated.

The media and the hysteria is awful. They should listen to Cheryl and wind their necks in.

It's the fact it feels like a part of their childhood has died to the fans. Some of those kids lived and breathed 1D at one point in time. Obviously you can't compare it to his friends and family but I can see why they would be devastated all the same.

vegandspice · 20/10/2024 00:20

I hope that this lovely guy’s funeral is private ,without even the date being announced! A truly sad final for Liam ,that should not be any fodder for the press/ media .

HalfWayDown · 20/10/2024 00:21

Not the point of the op but I find it hard to believe anyone in the Uk wouldn’t know who he is or who one direction are. I’m far from a fan but they were unavoidable for the last 15 years 😐

RedWinePoliticsAndHair · 20/10/2024 00:22

@HelenInHeels God, yes. In part because she was a 36yr old who died suddenly and not a 96yr old who was getting visibly frailer in front of our eyes, over a period of several years. One day she was being papped on a yacht in her swimming costume looking like a film star, the next she was dead in this most tragic way.

Diana dying had Britain- England more specifically- go the full Evita. Middle England just became queues and queues of Descamisados, waiting for hours on end to leave flowers in piles outside the gates of Kensington Palace and write in hastily-coordinated condolence books. It was properly batshit.

They really weren't 'unavoidable' and it's bonkers to think everyone in the UK would know who he was. Really?

Sad

Exactly this

unmemorableusername · 20/10/2024 00:35

I find myself being quite upset at his death even though I wouldn't have recognised him had I ever seen him in public.

I was a big fan of another boy band back in the day. If one of them had died at 31 I'd have been devastated.

Today some sites are reporting that he was donating to various children's go fund me pages for medical treatment in the days before he died.

He was far from perfect and did do bad things but he seemed so tortured and alone. It's a tragedy.

Livelovebehappy · 20/10/2024 01:06

It’s all becoming so predictable. Drink, drugs, trashing the place, and now apparently two prostitutes visiting his room in the hours prior to his death. His poor family, friends and girlfriend have to cope with this drip feed of events while grieving.

Agree. I can imagine a lot of young adults who were fans of theirs through from X factor to their huge success as a group, then solo careers, are going to feel pretty upset. It might seem a bit batshit to some people, especially those who never really followed 1d’s journey, or knew who they were, but this sort of grief is very real for some people. I remember being a big fan of George Michael, following his career from Wham through to his solo career and beyond, and I felt pretty devastated when he died. Maybe because they form quite a bit of your early memories, and seemed part of your life at the time.

They were a band for 5 or 6 years but broke up 8 years ago. A flash in the pan compared to some bands. Totally appreciate how upset fans are, but 1D were in no way known by everyone - I’d only recognise Liam from when he dated Cheryl.

Tabbyandwhite · 20/10/2024 01:27

Doubt it. Probably many people same as me - didn't know much about him or paid attention.

Yes I know who 1D are but beyond Harry Styles, wouldn't have known any of the other members' names or who they were.

I knew who Diana was, and whether people liked her or not, she was seen as the Queen of Hearts, got involved in many charities and good causes.
