Anyone else know they pronounce certain words wrong but just can’t change?

Lighthearted but I know I say certain words wrong but the ‘correct’ way just does not sound/feel right in my mouth to say lol

a few examples
-expresso…I know there’s no X but I just can’t say it espresso as it sounds wrong to me.
-words like diagnoses/crises…I know that’s how the plural is said but in my head it should be crisises, diagnosises. To be fair I avoid saying those ones because I know how ridiculous it is saying it wrong in my profession.

im sure there’s more but that’s the main 2 I can think of.

anyone else?

For me there are some words where the incorrect pronunciation has become habitual and I'm too old to change.

Wednesday (Wensday)
sixth (sikth)
appreciate (appreshiate)

I do manage to pronounce library and February correctly, which you'd think would be more difficult that the ones I've listed above.

Oh isn’t that funny. I think some of them are maybe a more accent/dialect type thing. Where I’m from none says Wednesday like that.

i thought appreciate should be said with the ‘sh’ sound? When people say it appre-see-ate that bothers me 😂

also another one I hear in the medical world where I work on the outskirts…steroids. Drs tend to say steer-oids whereas I’ve always said stair-oids. Same with the word area- is it ear-ea or air-ea??

I also work in a healthcare role and had to sit through a whole training session where the trainer said difibulator instead of defibrillator. Every time.
It made me question whether they understood the purpose of the equipment. If that's your job and you know you can't pronounce it, maybe say AED instead.

When I was a child, my teachers and older relatives said appreciate with an s sound rather than a sh sound, and would correct me if I used sh. I think using the s sound might be perceived as quite old-fashioned now though.

I think that’s how I say it lol although I’ve never had to say it in real life

For me it's plant names, I can see them written down but have no idea how to pronounce them. I just make my own versions up, so most people wouldn't have a clue what I was talking about.

Laiste · 18/10/2024 21:06

Tarz'n instead of TarZAN 🙄

The kids (early 20s now) find it absolutely and totally hilarious ...

I've said it that way since i was a kid and it's just stuck now. No idea why, but it doesn't crop up in life v often so i struggle to be bothered😂

Particularly Memadembabekia or whatever the fuck it's called 😂

There's a book series I read and I accidentally read a character's name wrong the first time but I've just stuck with it.
Like when I first read Harry Potter and mentally called Hermione "her-mi-own" despite knowing how to say it.

Tallisker · 18/10/2024 21:14

I hate the way Chris Evans and others say 'shuge' instead of 'huge'. There's no 's' at the beginning!

That’s funny because I did the same with some of the Harry Potter characters.
i called Draco Drack-o rather than drake-o when I read the books and that stuck

I hate the way some people say ‘yuge’ instead of pronouncing the H in ‘huge’ like Donald trump

I always say buried as "buh-reed" rather than "beh-reed" which I know it should be. But even in my head I say it wrong.
Can't say burglar to save my life (not scottish) or laboratory.

soupfiend · 18/10/2024 21:17

Loads of things

Wednesday above, I say Wensdi

Same with all the days of the week, they all end in 'di'

Many of the examples above which I cant be bothered to type out

A particular one though is 'lackadaisical' which I say and type usually (you're lucky tonight) as laxadasical. It blew my mind when I discovered Ive been saying it wrong but still say it wrong as now its the 'right' way to say it.

My partner says tons of things wrong and couldnt care less it seems and it really annoys me, the worst is quay, which he pronounces as kway and when I correct him each time he says 'thats how its spelt'.

Laiste · 18/10/2024 21:20

Donald Trump's pronounciation of China - there's a v funny compilation of it somewhere.

Gina, like the second syllable of vagina.

I’ve never heard an English person pronounce the word sixth correctly.

I really struggle with antibiotic. I have to concentrate really hard when I say it in order to say it correctly! I would say anti-bee-otic otherwise.

Laiste · 18/10/2024 21:21

DH says chimley instead of chimney.

toddlermom1 · 18/10/2024 21:24

ScrambledSmegs · 18/10/2024 21:28

My DCs accuse me of speaking like someone from an old film at times (I’m really not that bad) but I do say appreciate with an ‘s’ sound. Ditto tissues. I think it’s just something I picked up from spending so much of my childhood with my DGM.

However I did misread the occasional name in books like PPs. Even now I read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader as the ‘Dawn Trader’ and that’s the fricking title of the book. I also thought Caspain was a weird name for a prince Grin

saraclara · 18/10/2024 21:29

I genuinely don't understand why you can't say the words correctly once you've been told how it's said. I've made errors in the past, but never had a block that then prevented me learning and then using the right word. And I'm one of the oldies here!

Maybe there's a hearing/articulation version of dyslexia.

How are we supposed to pronounce it?
I've been sat here saying it over and over and I don't know how to say it any differently. The dog thinks I'm bonkers.
