Anyone else know they pronounce certain words wrong but just can’t change?

Lighthearted but I know I say certain words wrong but the ‘correct’ way just does not sound/feel right in my mouth to say lol

a few examples
-expresso…I know there’s no X but I just can’t say it espresso as it sounds wrong to me.
-words like diagnoses/crises…I know that’s how the plural is said but in my head it should be crisises, diagnosises. To be fair I avoid saying those ones because I know how ridiculous it is saying it wrong in my profession.

im sure there’s more but that’s the main 2 I can think of.

anyone else?

Chutney. Since I found out Diana Ross has a daughter called Chudney, I haven't been able to say it properly. Luckily it doesn't come up in conversation very often.

Pebbles16 · 18/10/2024 21:32

Some of these are accents - I love accents.
I say subnarine. Nothing can persuade me there's marine in there.

soupfiend · 18/10/2024 21:33

Sixth is a stupid word anyway

As in Shtoopid

I say 'sixs'

What doesnt come up very often, Diana Ross's daughter or the relish?!!!

Singleandproud · 18/10/2024 21:35

@CatamaranViper I'd never met a Hermione and read them when they came out so was shocked when the film came out and it was not pronounced Her-me-own-knee

idontlikefruitpastilles · 18/10/2024 21:35

I work with a lady who says flustrated instead of frustrated, and she says it A LOT. I find it very flustrating.

BananaSpanner · 18/10/2024 21:36

Not me but I’ve heard so many people pronounce verify as vary-fy and it irritates me more than it should.

Singleandproud · 18/10/2024 21:37

Hmm I'd see that as a mix of flustered and frustrated so more of a portmanteau than a wrong pronunciation

MovedonfromMartin · 18/10/2024 21:29

How are we supposed to pronounce it?
I've been sat here saying it over and over and I don't know how to say it any differently. The dog thinks I'm bonkers.

It's supposed to be sixth, not 'sikth'.
I know this, yet what comes out of my mouth is 'sikth' (unless I make a conscious effort).

Faircastle · 18/10/2024 21:40

Another word I have to make a conscious effort to pronounce correctly is remunerate / remuneration. The m and n keep trying to swap places.

Wordsearch3 · 18/10/2024 21:40

Twelfth
I definitely say twelth without the F in the middle

My DH says egnore instead of ignore - drives me mad!

Idontlikeyou · 18/10/2024 21:41

Pecuniary- I have to say it at every work meeting I chair. Can’t fucking say it. It’s mortifying.

Oh yes, snap. It should be an “n”!

jollygreenpea · 18/10/2024 21:42

I would look at that name and call it marmaduke :)

Thats a fantastic one though because if she is flustered when she gets frustrated that is about right!

User543211 · 18/10/2024 21:43

People that say 'generally' instead 'genuinely' e.g I was generally scared.
More of a word mix up that pronunciation but I hear it all the time!
For sixth, it's meant to be be siksth as opposed sikth if that makes sense.

Ok put me down for that one as well, they're all coming out the woodwork now these words!

I work with a lot of people who seem to say 'sin' instead of 'seen', but on the other hand I say 'bin' for 'been'

I also have heard too many times for it to be coincidence people who say 'towing and throwing' instead of 'towing and froing'. It does my head in

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/10/2024 21:45

focaccia

I can never remember how to pronounce it. Even if I've heard it said minutes ago. It simply won't stick.

MorrisZapp · 18/10/2024 21:45

I'm a stickler for correctness but I never get swelled/swollen right.

'I hurt my ankle and it swole right up'. It's wrong but I can't seem to reach for 'swelled'.

jollygreenpea · 18/10/2024 21:46

Laiste · 18/10/2024 21:10

Yes me too.

Particularly Memadembabekia or whatever the fuck it's called 😂

(Wire Vine)

@Laiste

I made a mess of replying to you, sorry.

That plant would be known as marmaduke.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 18/10/2024 21:50

Anomaly
I can spell it, I can say it slowly if I think about it.
If I just say it it comes out as anolamy

My nephew says hostipal, ambliance and ridiclious but he's only 4
