Anyone else know they pronounce certain words wrong but just can’t change?

Lighthearted but I know I say certain words wrong but the ‘correct’ way just does not sound/feel right in my mouth to say lol

a few examples
-expresso…I know there’s no X but I just can’t say it espresso as it sounds wrong to me.
-words like diagnoses/crises…I know that’s how the plural is said but in my head it should be crisises, diagnosises. To be fair I avoid saying those ones because I know how ridiculous it is saying it wrong in my profession.

im sure there’s more but that’s the main 2 I can think of.

anyone else?

Can someone explain the Wens-day one. How else do you say it?

It makes me want to cry when people say haitch (I know there are reasons in Ireland). I was always told it was wrong and it was only when I went to uni that I heard people say it IRL. I now work in HR so it's pretty painful.

focaccia

I can never remember how to pronounce it. Even if I've heard it said minutes ago. It simply won't stick.

Same here!!
Who are these people who are saying sixth with the x?! I've only ever heard "sikth"
OP I'm always hearing doctors saying "steeroid" too! Hopefully someone can enlighten us! 😁

How are we supposed to pronounce it?
I've been sat here saying it over and over and I don't know how to say it any differently. The dog thinks I'm bonkers.

Sicksth ?!

Ive heard posh people say a sort of condensed version of wed nes day, sort of wedensday, difficult to type how they say it

Anyway, its Wensdi.

I had a boyfriend who insisted people from Sicily were 'Sicilicans' not Sicilians.

Somebody'll come by and tell me they're actually called something completely different again now!

SqueamishHamish · 18/10/2024 21:58

Epitome - should be 'epitomee' but I say it how I read it! Also Siobhan. How in the world is that said 'Shevaun'. Again I say it as I read it until I catch myself.

gettingolderbutcooler · 18/10/2024 21:59

Quinoa 😩

LouH5 · 18/10/2024 22:01

Me and my mum have an In-joke from years ago where we would pronounce bagel as “bag-el” instead of the normal “bay-gul.” And now it’s stuck and I always call it a bag-el!

Also, and I can’t explain it, but I can never remember how to correctly pronounce “pecan.”
Is it “peck-an” or “pea-can”?!
I always panic in a cafe or something as I genuinely forget 🤣

BobTheBobcatsBob · 18/10/2024 22:04

I used to teach and one particular Year 4 class would always laugh when I said 'half' as I pronounced it "huff". Huff past 10. They would laugh every time I said the word and try and teach me to say it properly.

Loveduvetdays · 18/10/2024 22:05

I struggle with theatre - I say it as thee etter not Theater!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 18/10/2024 22:05

I sometimes struggle with the word strategy especially mid sentence , not ideal when my own job title includes the word strategic, it's something about that initial str sound almost makes my teeth whistle

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 18/10/2024 22:06

I pronounce year and it sounds like 'fur' rather than 'hear'. Don't know if that makes sense 🤣

BananaSpanner · 18/10/2024 22:06

My lovely MIL says hospical instead of hospital.

AllTheAll · 18/10/2024 22:07

I used to pronounce jewelry "joolery" everyone did but it was pointed out (probably here) that it's "jewel-ry" and I'm much more careful now.

Still have to check myself on "marina". I want to say it like mariner or marinara- stress on MARE-ina. And not Ma-reen-a like a girl's name.

For me there are some words where the incorrect pronunciation has become habitual and I'm too old to change.

Wednesday (Wensday)
sixth (sikth)
appreciate (appreshiate)

I do manage to pronounce library and February correctly, which you'd think would be more difficult that the ones I've listed above.

You are pronouncing all of those words correctly. Just because they don’t sound like they are spelt doesn’t mean that’s wrong. Have you ever heard anyone say WED-NES-DAY?? Course you haven’t.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 18/10/2024 22:09

Who says wed-nes-day? I also wouldn't say Feb-r-uary.

I’m the same with mocha…is it mocka or moke-a? I avoid it!

It must be a regional thing perhaps. I’m a South West/South East/ Midlands hybrid.

Loads of things

Wednesday above, I say Wensdi

Same with all the days of the week, they all end in 'di'

Many of the examples above which I cant be bothered to type out

A particular one though is 'lackadaisical' which I say and type usually (you're lucky tonight) as laxadasical. It blew my mind when I discovered Ive been saying it wrong but still say it wrong as now its the 'right' way to say it.

My partner says tons of things wrong and couldnt care less it seems and it really annoys me, the worst is quay, which he pronounces as kway and when I correct him each time he says 'thats how its spelt'.

I didn't go to school in the uk and learnt English as a second language. We were taught that the correct pronunciation is wensdi, Thursdi, etc. Funnily enough I don't say it like that (ie I say ..day rather than di) but always thought I'm saying it wrong.

There are many words that I pronounce incorrectly, eg I pronounce ant the same as 'aunt' and I always say privacy as Preyevacy because otherwise I feel i sound pretentious though I think in British English the standard way to say it is privacy.

There are also some sounds that I struggle to pronounce as they don't exist in the language I grew up with, in particular, t and v as they are pronounced differently in English.

Lovemycat2023 · 18/10/2024 22:16

Other way round for me - but if I read segue in my head it sounds like “seeg” not “segway”.

petitdonkey · 18/10/2024 22:16

Please can someone give me a definitive pronunciation of paracetamol?? I was brought up saying pa-ra-seet-amol but, in adulthood, everyone else seems to say para-set-amol… I want to correct them but suspect it’s me that’s wrong!! (Especially since I learnt it from my mum who makes a sangwich….)

Schedule for me. I know it's not skeduke but that's how I want to pronounce it.

Also where I'm from waffles are pronounced to rhyme with wiff-waff rather than to rhyme with awful

@Idontlikeyou and @Wordsearch3 Ah cool. I've never heard them pronounced like that IRL. For me it's 'wensday', 'febuary'. I'm from West Yorkshire.
