Anyone else know they pronounce certain words wrong but just can’t change?

Lighthearted but I know I say certain words wrong but the ‘correct’ way just does not sound/feel right in my mouth to say lol

a few examples
-expresso…I know there’s no X but I just can’t say it espresso as it sounds wrong to me.
-words like diagnoses/crises…I know that’s how the plural is said but in my head it should be crisises, diagnosises. To be fair I avoid saying those ones because I know how ridiculous it is saying it wrong in my profession.

im sure there’s more but that’s the main 2 I can think of.

anyone else?

possibly 🤣. What words does your aunt pronounce wrong?

Aw-ry
Timoteeay (Timotei)
Proscutio

DH says chimley instead of chimney.

Lots of people where I live say chimley or chimbly

LorettyTen · 18/10/2024 23:52

I don't do it (thanks to a strict primary school teacher) but a lot of people local to me say bockle instead of bottle, kekkle instead of kettle, lickle instead of little.

I've not heard those ones. mine also says Chimley instead of chimney, Bockle and keckle instead of Bottle/kettle. There's lots more which I can't think of right now.

My mum pronounces squirrel as squirl as in rhymes with twirl

I remember a radio phone in on how to pronounce chimney. One caller rang in and said "people who pronounce it as chimley are a load of walkers" 😂

Brufen was a type of ibuprofen.

I pronounce both d"s in Wednesday. It's interesting to hear that some others think that no-one does. Either they're only interacting with people with the same accent, or the brain is amending what they're hearing, because it's really not unusual.

My mum pronounces Wednesday like you and has always told me it's the correct way to say it... I can never for the life of me say both letter Ds... I can't seem to stop saying "Wens-day" instead of how she sits "Wed-ens-day" 😂

Brilliant 😂😂

Adalimumab

Secukinumab.

Damned biologics. Can't even follow the same weird pattern in the middle from one drug to the next.

Not a pharmacist just take the medications - can pronounce but avoid levetiracitam - just use Keppra though I can take the generic. Find tranexamic hard as well.

Gingercatlover · 19/10/2024 00:29

Can't say Keltic (Celtic) it comes out Seltic even though I know it's wrong 🤦🏼‍♀️

itisafuckinggoat · 19/10/2024 00:51

@NeverDropYourMooncup my fave: cloppy-DOG-rel - clopidogrel

Thunderpants88 · 19/10/2024 00:56

I say “breakfrast” I did it recently on the phone to my sibling and they said it’s driven them nuts for years. I didn’t even know I did it until she pointed it out. Now I realise my kids do it too 😂

fluffyfurryfeatherythings · 19/10/2024 01:18

Perscription.

Every 2 weeks when I go in.

If I try and say prescription I just sound like I'm massively lisping.

HeartandSeoul · 19/10/2024 01:23

As a child, I found out I was pronouncing Cornwall incorrectly (I was saying CornMALL!). I could have sworn I had heard the adults around me pronounce it like that.

I struggle to remember to say it correctly now, 30+ years later 🫣.

I hate the way Chris Evans and others say 'shuge' instead of 'huge'. There's no 's' at the beginning!

Do you have a clip? I can’t really imagine what this sounds like.

kennycat · 19/10/2024 01:49

i think my pronunciation is good, can’t think of anything I mispronounce but my husband says ‘curtins’ instead if curtains and it drives me nuts!

Ha! My son is on adalimumab. I can spell it, but God help me if anyone asks me to say it out loud🤣

ODFOx · 19/10/2024 02:05

DH mocks me for the way I pronounce the word 'layer' but Mary Berry and I are in agreement so I don't care if it's correct.

buffyfaithspike · 19/10/2024 02:12

I say haf instead of half
So it sounds more like haff

GandDiva · 19/10/2024 02:17

I've never been able to say profiteroles without having to really think about it. It comes out as profiferroles! Luckily, I don't order them very often! Also abominable comes out as aboninable or something that sounds like abdomenable

Molly70 · 19/10/2024 02:40

I never pronounce oregano properly or turmeric. I saw them used in recipes but never knew how they pronounced and now I can’t undo my pronunciation

I do that, but only for the time e.g. "haff past nine". Otherwise it's e.g. "There's your harff".

Sixth I say as "sikst" I just can't manage both the "x" and the "th" sound together.

I often find myself saying "parnsip".

The British English spelling of items such as rings, necklaces etc. is "jewellery", not "jewelry", that's the US spelling. So I think it's perfectly acceptable to say "jool- erry".

"Nuclear" is easy if you just say "new clear".

Medicines can be pronounced any which way you please, if you ask me. 😉

Wordsearch3 · 18/10/2024 22:34

Yes I always hear I-brufen here’s the P??

Brufen used to be a trade name of Ibuprofen so I can understand the portmanteau of the two words.
For me, I really hate the disappearance of the sibilant sound in words starting 'str'
Eg, People will say 'Indushtry' for 'industry' or 'shtreet' for 'street'. Continuity announcers on Channel 4 seem to particularly 'shtruggle' with this.

Oneearringlost · 19/10/2024 07:52

I completely agree with the biologics' pronunciation, they seem designed to sound horribly clumsy...anything word ending in 'mub' is just ugly.
'Sulphazalazine', on the other hand, is a word of beauty....!
