I’m really ill - when do I start to worry?

I’m sorry for the TMI but it’s 3:30am and entering day 5 of illness, so safe to say I’m completely and utter drained.

On Monday morning I had diarrhea (very bad) and it has yet to ease off. I am nauseous all day (and night) and for the first 2 days would be covered in goosebumps the minute I got up off the sofa.

I haven’t eaten since Sunday (apart from the odd slice of toast) but I have been drinking lots of water.

I lost count how many times I went to the toilet yesterday and I’ve just been again and it’s all the water that I’ve been drinking is just coming straight out.

I’m on the verge of throwing up and despite drinking I’m becoming increasingly dehydrated. I really do feel awful.

Tummy is all over the place and won’t stop growling at me. I did have intense tummy cramping at one point earlier in the week but luckily that hasn’t returned.

I came back from the toilet quite literally 3-4 minutes ago but need to go again now.

Just not sure whether it will pass (looking bloody unlikely to be any time soon though) or if I need to get something, I don’t actually know what though, from the Doctor.

Feeling very weak and starting to get some mild chest pains from it all now.

@Rainbows89 I have young children but DP is almost home, I somehow managed to get them undressed and in bed so now I’m just waiting for DP. It’s really taken it out of me and judging by the sounds that are coming from my stomach doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon…

Sounds like me when I had COVID and it attacked my gallbladder. I was in severe pain with uncontrollable D&V. I spent 2 days in hospital and they took it very seriously. Take care of yourself!

Spuck · 18/10/2024 20:35

Thanks everyone. Typically DP is stuck at work (I thought he’d left). I’ve had another dioralyte and ate a slice of toast just to see if I can bulk my stomach up a bit. TV is on but all I can hear is my bloody insides going crazy. I’ve never had anything like it - with D&V bugs I’m usually quite poorly for 24 hours then start to get over it…

I have to wait it out until he gets home and see how I’m doing (kinda basing the next visit on whether I’m going to keep this dioralyte and toast in me).

What a week…

The thing that makes me think it is a nasty food poisoning but is that Noro ime anyway is more about sickness. When I had salmonella it was literally like the shits at a level I’ve never had them before or since. And I remember the pain of it.

@Teateaandmoretea Yes I agree - this is exactly me. Luckily the gripping stomach cramping has subsided but my goodness it was bad.

You poor soul

MinnieJumbo · 18/10/2024 20:47

I’d want to consider C.diff at this point op. Ask to be tested. Good luck.

Icantbuystrawberries · 18/10/2024 21:00

Yeah this sounds awful, I would call 111 and see where they suggest. An out of hours GP appointment might be quicker.

LurkingFromTheShadows · 18/10/2024 21:07

I'm not a doctor or a medical professional.

Last year, I had an awful d&v virus which lasted 10 days. Stomach cramps, diarrhoea. I've never experienced pain with d&v like that before ever. I bought a probiotic course, drank a lot of water. But in the end I just had to wait for it to pass.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 18/10/2024 22:33

Similar thing here since last Monday night. 2 days of vomiting and I spent everyday in and out of the bathroom. I'm taking electrolytes but its just water going through now.

Friend had 12 days of it recently. Another friend 7 days. None of us have had in person contact with each other.

Not bashing NHS services at all, but the hospital will be concerned with the acute symptoms (i.e. dehydration) and if you're not showing signs then they might see you as fit to discharge as no symptoms to treat. That's the reality just now due to bed pressures, I'm not saying it is right.

It might be better managed by your GP. I would call 111 again, tell them you were in overnight and you are still unwell. I might tell them you are concerned you have a bacterial infection that might spread.
If possible can you collect some of your next bowel movement [grim, I'm sorry] for stool testing?
Are the rest of your family ok? Have you got more than 1 toilet so you can use a separate one incase you are infective?

Hope you feel better soon. Keep drinking dioralyte or lucozade sport or similar, not just water even, if you don't want to.

Agree with this, unfortunately. I've had an absolutely terrible experience with A&E being remotely interested in something similar, but a step up. It isn't right, but seems to be how it is. Although different services seem to be more stretched in some areas than others, and sometimes all it takes is an empathetic nhs employee, so you might have more luck.

JustForTheTasteOfItDC · 19/10/2024 14:22

How are you doing today OP?

Spuck · 19/10/2024 16:59

@JustForTheTasteOfItDC thank you so much for checking in ☺️

I’m actually doing ok - never bothered going back in and turned out I slept through (was shattered from the previous night) and didn’t go to the toilet either, thank goodness.

I’m managing to keep all the water and dioralyte down, no appetite but brilliant way to lose some pounds!

I’ve just been on the sofa really but starting to perk up more this afternoon so reckon i’m over the worst.

I still can’t get over how awful it was though!

I would seek medical advice. In the meantime a friend of mine who's a Dr gave me this recipe for a rehydration drink. 1 litre of water 6 teaspoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of salt. Mix until fully dissolved and sip through the day. Hope you're feeling better soon.

ImTheMidsomerMurderer · 19/10/2024 19:30

@Spuck Glad you're over the worst and feeling a little better. Hopefully that's you on the mend 💐

Balloonhearts · 19/10/2024 19:36

Probably norovirus, that can flatten you for weeks.

Loafbeginsat60 · 19/10/2024 19:42

So pleased to read you are feeling better OP

Literallywingingit · 19/10/2024 20:26

Was about to say the same thing, bloody d+ and intense cramps for days, turned out to campylobacter I had caught from one of my doggy patients.( can also get from chicken as well I think!)

Jack80 · 19/10/2024 20:33

Feel better soon 💗

Hobnob90 · 19/10/2024 20:50

Tbh I’d be surprised if it was norovirus and nobody else in the house has come down with it. It’s highly contagious, could be food poisoning. If you’re still ill Monday maybe worth contacting Gp see if they can send off a stool sample.

LadyLolaRuben · 19/10/2024 20:57

I was very similar OP for 2 weeks. This is my first week feeling better. Going hot and called, upset stomach and nausea every morning. Due to my job I had to test for covid19, it was positive. The XEC strain is going round.

BlueFlowers5 · 19/10/2024 21:16

Warm lemonade can help with restoring electrolytes...

NoisyBrain · 19/10/2024 21:21

@Literallywingingit I had that once, it was awful! I have never been so ill in my life.

Me too. Diarrhoea for 10 days straight. Thought I was dying….so,so ill. Had been cleaning up puppy poo so assume that was why.

Same here!!! I thought I was dying. Bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, shakes, chills. I couldn't keep anything in. Lasted three weeks 😞

Bababi · 19/10/2024 21:34

Hope you feel better soon OP!

I once had exactly what you’ve described but I would violently vomit about 10 mins after eating anything alongside the D. I had just given birth and had been on quite a load of antibiotics which completely wiped my gut to the point of being unable to eat or drink anything. I let it go on too long before going to A&E (although I was trying desperately not to go cause of needing to leave my baby at home). I went and had all the samples bad dehydration and ultimately they just said to try probiotics. I did that and within 48 hours I was getting better.
