I’m really ill - when do I start to worry?

I’m sorry for the TMI but it’s 3:30am and entering day 5 of illness, so safe to say I’m completely and utter drained.

On Monday morning I had diarrhea (very bad) and it has yet to ease off. I am nauseous all day (and night) and for the first 2 days would be covered in goosebumps the minute I got up off the sofa.

I haven’t eaten since Sunday (apart from the odd slice of toast) but I have been drinking lots of water.

I lost count how many times I went to the toilet yesterday and I’ve just been again and it’s all the water that I’ve been drinking is just coming straight out.

I’m on the verge of throwing up and despite drinking I’m becoming increasingly dehydrated. I really do feel awful.

Tummy is all over the place and won’t stop growling at me. I did have intense tummy cramping at one point earlier in the week but luckily that hasn’t returned.

I came back from the toilet quite literally 3-4 minutes ago but need to go again now.

Just not sure whether it will pass (looking bloody unlikely to be any time soon though) or if I need to get something, I don’t actually know what though, from the Doctor.

Feeling very weak and starting to get some mild chest pains from it all now.

Thanks everyone.

I’m just about to go home, I had 1 bag of fluids but bloods didn’t show that I was badly dehydrated (despite feeling otherwise). I’ve got some dioralyte so also been sipping on that. I managed a banana and 2 crackers although still came right through me.

Apparently I need to manage it at home now and keep sipping on the water and dioralyte. They did say that there is a high number of norovirus cases so could well be that.

Feeling very tired so looking forward to getting on the sofa!

Eat ready salted crisps. Got salts, carbs etc. And gentle on the tummy x

We've had a lot of Norovirus recently

It sounds like me, when I had campylobacter....a really common food poisoning bug, but man...I felt absolutely dreadful...possibly the worse sickness/diarrhoea bug I've ever had. I went so often I was passing stomach acid, it was excruciatingly painful. I had a migraine with it, sickness and was completely wiped out.

Definitely phone 111 ...I really hope you start feeling better x x

LetsHopeSo · 18/10/2024 10:42

Did you give them a stool sample? They definitely need to test it in case of food poisoning, I would say to them.

randomusernam · 18/10/2024 10:44

Some stomach bugs last for a while. Take some Imodium, have lots of electrolyte drinks and try to eat dry things. Sounds like a virus which will pass. I got a bug very similar to this when in Morocco and the Imodium really helped

ssd · 18/10/2024 10:49

You poor soul. Lie on that sofa, sip your water and take careFlowers

Username5000 · 18/10/2024 10:53

Oh you poor thing. We had what I think was noro virus earlier in the year and it's one of the few times I've felt very seriously ill. It's not like a normal stomach bug! I think I started to feel better after about a week, but to be honest it was probably more than two weeks before I felt completely back to normal. Get well soon 💐

LushLemonTart · 18/10/2024 10:57

Mil's care home is rife with norovirus.

Hope you improve soon.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/10/2024 12:11

I think you should contact your gp and get them to take a stool sample. To check for Salmonella and Compylobacta.

Completely agree with this, they will also be able to check for inflammation and repeat your bloods.

Aw, take care of yourself. At least you've been checked out and can concentrate on getting better instead of worrying about it being something very serious.

I did ask the GP to do that after three weeks after a meal in a restaurant. He said no point. I just wanted someone to check that restaurant for health, hygiene reasons. It lasted six weeks, no way was it norovirus.

You can have ABs for some bacterial infections

MymblesMother · 18/10/2024 15:34

Did they take a stool sample?
It's sounds very like when my daughter had campylobacter.
Hope you feel better soon, OP

rugbychick1 · 18/10/2024 15:56

I had this many years ago. I contacted GP who got me to do a sample. Was campolobactor. I was off work for 3 weeks

Spuck · 18/10/2024 19:50

Hi everyone,

I’m really considering heading back in - opinions welcome…

No, they did not take a stool sample and from what I gather they only really wanted to do the bloods to check hydration levels.

They said it was most likely a virus.

The diarrhea is pathetic. I’ve been about 10 times since returning home (obviously have hardly eaten so not a load comes out - sorry this is deeply embarrassing). However whatever I’ve drank does and I just feel so weak. Everything goes straight through me.

Do I go back? Or see how I feel in the morning and hope i’m not running to the toilet all night :(

OP are you by yourself? It sounds like you are.

I would definitely go back in. You sound really poorly.

Spuck · 18/10/2024 19:59

@Rainbows89 I have young children but DP is almost home, I somehow managed to get them undressed and in bed so now I’m just waiting for DP. It’s really taken it out of me and judging by the sounds that are coming from my stomach doesn’t look like it’s going to stop any time soon…

Hi OP yes I definitely would. They need to do a stool sample and it sounds like you have what I had, which was bacterial food poisoning. I needed antibiotics to get on top of it. You poor thing hope you get it sorted Flowers

Sidebeforeself · 18/10/2024 20:02

Just go back. I had Ecoli once and it sounds very similar. They said I’d risked kidney damage by not seeking treatment sooner. Im not saying its that , but I mean its so easy to think its “just” D&V when it could be something much more serious

RareitySparkles · 18/10/2024 20:15

I had something like this and it was food poisoning and their was a public health investigation. The gp told me to not eat anything for two days ( 6 weeks in) while waiting for results. Thankfully that worked. I'm not advising you do this. You can try really dilute oxo cube drinks for some salts I think the gp said ( long time ago)

ghostbusters · 18/10/2024 20:18

Not bashing NHS services at all, but the hospital will be concerned with the acute symptoms (i.e. dehydration) and if you're not showing signs then they might see you as fit to discharge as no symptoms to treat. That's the reality just now due to bed pressures, I'm not saying it is right.

It might be better managed by your GP. I would call 111 again, tell them you were in overnight and you are still unwell. I might tell them you are concerned you have a bacterial infection that might spread.
If possible can you collect some of your next bowel movement [grim, I'm sorry] for stool testing?
Are the rest of your family ok? Have you got more than 1 toilet so you can use a separate one incase you are infective?

Hope you feel better soon. Keep drinking dioralyte or lucozade sport or similar, not just water even, if you don't want to.

RosieShacklebolt · 18/10/2024 20:21

100% go back in, hold your ground, make a fuss, say loudly things like 'stool sample', 'day 7', 'deeply concerned'. Otherwise healthy, fit adults' bodies will often 'compensate' very well (hence your earlier bloods were normal) - until they suddenly don't. If they try to send you home, ask what their safety netting is for you - i.e. what are they looking for over the next few days, when should you be going back in etc? Don't underplay ANYTHING (sometimes we've a tendency to do that especially when medical professionals look rushed off their feet). Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!!!

RosieShacklebolt · 18/10/2024 20:22

Oh and yes keep on with the dioralyte, plain water will not be enough.
