What has happened to toilet paper?

I know its a rather odd topic for discussion.

Used to buy Wairose essential stuff. It was thick, long rolls, unbleached, and plain (untextured). They've changed it now and it's the same as everything else; flimsy, quilted/textured and leaa on a roll.
Is there anything proper out there? Just bought 'who gives a crap'and disappointed to discover that that's also thin and textured.
I don't want fragrances, or texture or stuff your fingers go through. I don't want stuff so flimsy that you have to use half a roll for a bowel movement.
Doss such a product exist any more? What is this new trend for mediocre stuff?

I have a very leafy palm in my bathroom, just above the toilet roll holder.....

Might be worth trying a leaf from your palm for wiping purposes.
Would be bio-degradable.
😉😁😁.

I don't like heavily quilted paper and now use cushelle

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2024 18:33

A plumber once advised us not to buy the quilted / thicker paper as it tends to block up the drains ( we have shallow ones apparently)
Cheaper thinner ones are a false economy , but has to be done to save the drains!

They seem to wrap the sheets more loosely around the roll, so they look the same size, but last nowhere near as long, and I would swear that the inner cardboard tubes are bigger as well.

I second this. Nowadays I go out of my way to get Asda Shades as I think it's better than any of the branded stuff.

I recently shopped at Asda for the first time in years and bought this and thought the quality was awful! I can’t even remember what we usually have, it varies by what is on offer but usually branded and the Asda one was so bad. Why do people here hate quilted?!

Rudeypoohs · 17/10/2024 21:25

Sainsbury’s quilted is a good one xx

I know. I want nice toilet paper like you find in a hotel, but it doesn’t exist

I use a toilet wipe now as they are like sandpaper on your bum.

Hope you bin them and not flush them :

Wipes can cause a number of problems, including:

Fatbergs
Wet wipes are a major cause of fatbergs, which are solid mounds of grease, oils, food, and wipes that can block sewers and cause flooding. Fatbergs can be so large that they require hand tools to break up.

Water pollution
Wet wipes can end up in rivers, beaches, and seas, where they can break down into microplastics that harm sea creatures.

Misleading packaging
Some wet wipes are labeled as "flushable" or "fine to flush", but these wipes often contain plastic and don't break down in sewers.

I’ve been buying that Waitrose one for years & 2 weeks ago it changed, it was a really solid roll & now it’s just awful & flimsy😩

sanityisamyth · 17/10/2024 21:34

Big thumbs up for Asda shades.

echt · 17/10/2024 21:39

The Aldi Confidence 3-ply is excellent and comes in bigger rolls too. It's made in Australia, but I imagine the standards would be much the same in the UK.

Having said that I know some goods of all kinds are differently formulated for different countries, but you'd think bums are much of a muchness.

Onand · 17/10/2024 21:44

For me it’s the dust, I’ve found in the last couple of years the paper is very dry and as a result no matter which brand there’s lots of paper dust.

BashfulClam · 17/10/2024 17:32

The M&S stuff with the stars in it is great.

I was going to say this too, but haven't bought it for a while so not sure if it still was, or if it had gone the same way as all the others.

MargaretBetts · 17/10/2024 21:54

Strange subject but I only said to the one DC at home permanently today that we seem to be using a lot of loo roll. I suspect much smaller rolls (M&S or Waitrose own brand). I’m sure we’ve used nine rolls in a month.

LlynTegid · 17/10/2024 21:59

I don't think wanting to be clean is a strange subject.

justasking111 · 17/10/2024 22:09

We're certainly using more rolls. I'm saving them for gerbil mazes my son likes to build.

gonnabeteoubleemma · 17/10/2024 22:10

Cheeky panda is the best. No lint at all

The inner tube is wider and it’s not as tightly wrapped. I found a homemade Christmas cracker I made at nursery 40 + years ago using a bog roll cardboard tube it’s so much narrower.

Fiftyfiveandcounting · 17/10/2024 22:22

We’ve recently started using the bamboo toilet paper from Who gives a Crap. I expected it to be expensive and no better than my usual brand but was recommended by a friend so thought I’d give it a try to see why she rates it. It’s lint free and soft but doesn’t fall apart and does its job well but the best thing so far is how much the dust in my bathrooms has reduced. Usually there is dust on the blinds and skirting and I’m wiping them a couple of times a week but for last few weeks it’s not built up at all. For this reason alone I’m going to keep buying it. Has to be the b&w bamboo stuff though the colourful recycled is no better imo.

MargaretBetts · 17/10/2024 22:23

As long as you’re wiping your arse and washing your hands afterwards you’re largely ok. The details of the actual loo roll used and changes to thickness, roll size, fragrance etc., etc. does not make a jot of difference.

TiredTeaBag · 17/10/2024 22:25

Thank god for this thread. I genuinely thought something was wrong with me with linty toilet roll fanny clinkers.

I will be trying some of these recommendations.

I thought as much but cba to invest too much time on 🧻! I’ll just keep buying it @BashfulClam ! Thankfully gone are the days when my now 18 year old used to wrap it half way up their arm as a toddler.

In search of old-fashioned loo roll...(title edited by MNHQ at request of OP) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/5117705-in-search-of-non-quilted-toilet-paper

Similar thread - mainly focused on the horrific recent changes to Waitrose loo roll you have also referred to, OP. I've yet to find a decent replacement and I feel like I've tried dozens of alternatives.

TeabySea · 18/10/2024 10:21

I'll be trying some of these, so appreciate all the input!

Another vote for ASDA shades - make sure it is the blue packet NOT the purple everyday ones (the everyday ones aren't as good).
