What has happened to toilet paper?

I know its a rather odd topic for discussion.

Used to buy Wairose essential stuff. It was thick, long rolls, unbleached, and plain (untextured). They've changed it now and it's the same as everything else; flimsy, quilted/textured and leaa on a roll.
Is there anything proper out there? Just bought 'who gives a crap'and disappointed to discover that that's also thin and textured.
I don't want fragrances, or texture or stuff your fingers go through. I don't want stuff so flimsy that you have to use half a roll for a bowel movement.
Doss such a product exist any more? What is this new trend for mediocre stuff?

Op yes! The waitrose own brand stuff was brilliant, as it wasn't too thick but was strong and seemed to last for ages.

I noticed it has changed so the rolls are much more loosely wound and the paper is so thin. It's not worth buying anymore.

I shall give Asda a go, as I specifically don't want thick or quilted which seem to block up one of my toilets every time.

For some reason loo rolls these days can make me itch like crazy.

Ebeneser · 17/10/2024 15:00

Does everyone remember the toilet roll you used to get at schools? It was like wiping your bum on greaseproof paper. You could probably have written your homework on it.

Costco's signature Kirkland toilet rolls are amazing.... I have found nothing compares to them, have tried most brands, leading and otherwise.

Normallynumb · 17/10/2024 15:05

I buy Nicky from home bargains/ Asda but I agree, it does produce a lot of dust
I will try Asda shades next time

Sarah2891 · 17/10/2024 15:09

I've had this issue too. I used to love the waitrose one. I recently started using Cheeky Panda, which I've found good - soft, strong, not fragranced.
The rolls appear almost half used but it's because they are very tightly wound up.

Redebs · 17/10/2024 15:16

We have two atrocious brands in use at the moment and I really want to get rid of them, but that would be wasteful. There's a flimsy Cushelle that I thought was the worst ever, until we got some horrors from Costco.
It did occur to me to make some Halloween 'mummy' outfits out of them, but that's not eco. Besides, they'd probably just dissolve and break apart.

Lidl in the mauve wrapper is pretty good. I like Regina but find I can't get it locally anymore.

soupfiend · 17/10/2024 15:25

I thought it was just me that struggled with linty toilet paper, on a bad day the back of the loo looks like ive poured desiccated coconut over it.

Anisty · 17/10/2024 15:26

Aldi basics here - don't see any point in buying pricey loo roll at all.

This is exactly what I thought of when I read the op😂 that stuff was indestructible 🤣

Izal medicated?!! Yes, lol!!! Absolutely useless!

AntonDuPig · 17/10/2024 15:27

What has happened to toilet paper?

It's shit.
Literally.

I was a Waitrose essentials devotee too.

ForeverTipsy · 17/10/2024 15:31

I've been making a special trip to Asda every 4-5 weeks, just to get their Shades big rolls, for years (then usually spend over £100 on other stuff whilst I'm there!).

However, they too have changed their supplier and it's thinner and more linty 🙁 Recent reviews on their website back this up.

Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking. The only use it had was tracing paper!!

Asda shades so soft toilet roll is pretty decent. Comes in larger rolls so it lasts longer too

We use this too.

Compash · 17/10/2024 15:36

Yes! It's not just me and my arse! I switched from Sainsbo to Andrex and I'm a dabber, not a scrubber, but still it breaks up into bumdruff... 🙈

I bet it's something they call 'eco' which really means 'cheaper to make'... Will try some of the recommends on here, thanks you... 🧻

T4phage · 17/10/2024 15:37

We get Lidl soft and padded stuff and it's okay. Can't remember what it's called, but they have about three different grades of paper and only one is cheap and thin.

Izal, my children. Beloved of primary schools and grandparents...

Gowlett · 17/10/2024 15:41

There was one Andrex that I found decent, but there’s so many different ones… I don’t know which one it was!
Sainsburys own brand (€2 for four rolls) is the best I’ve tried recently. We don’t have a store local to us, though!

Wexone · 17/10/2024 15:53

Oh totally get you - seen a blogger rant about the Waitrose one recently and looked at the comments on their website, they were unreal. I actually had a very embarrassing issue a few years ago and had to be careful with what loo roll i used so after much testing 😫i now found that Cheeky Panda one and have subscription on Amazon. Its the only one i found that is plain white paper, not quilted or dusty

Pleiades2020 · 17/10/2024 15:54

I use cushelle quilted. It lasts longer as it is....well...quilted, and you need less. Probably doesn't meet your brief though (no pun intended).
