Do you know Aberystwyth?

My DS is at Aberystwyth Uni. Just started. For months we’ve promised to come up and visit on ‘Venom’ weekend and go to the cinema to watch it with him.

So we have booked our accommodation and are looking forward to it…but now I can’t find a blooming cinema showing Venom, or even a cinema really.

Does anyone know the area enough to be able to advise?

Many thanks!

There's the arts centre which has a cinema and an independent cinema called The Commodore. I don't know anything about the Venom film though, is that what it's called? Down the coast there's The Mwldan in Cardigan which has a few screens and is generally pretty good.

Thank you.

I’ve check the Commodore and it’s not showing Venom.

Venom is the antihero monster that’s stuck in Tom Hardy’s body. It’s the third movie and a brand new release next week. My son is upset excited for it,

I’ll check out the other cinema thanks!

Oh, I remember that film, it's funny, I was looking forward to the new one when I watched the second, thanks for reminding me!

Buddleja · 16/10/2024 22:18

Cinema is called Commodore. To be honest wouldn't be hugely confident it would show Venom on the weekend it is released. It's only got one screen.

Thank you. I can see it’s not showing Venom until November! We’ve booked to go up and stay on the 26th Oct 😔

Sorry OP, living this far West can be a bit challenging sometimes when it comes to keeping completely up to date, we have to make do with the sea for an awful lot of our entertainment! I wish I could help more. How far do you mind driving if the opening weekend is that important?

Compash · 16/10/2024 22:26

The Commodore! Been there for years... We used to call it 'The Come Again'...

Sorry, can't help on the showings...

Well, I’ll be driving three hours to get to there, so really didn’t want to add more driving to the day.

I was picturing getting there, taking him for the movie, going for a meal, dropping him back at uni, staying the night at a hotel and then visiting the butterfly farm on the way home 😂

Not quite sure what to do now. How do you guys on the West Coast not have a Vue or a Cineworld! 😂

It's about 1h 30 to Carmarthen, there's a 4.30 showing if you want to make a day of it and look around then be back in Aber for a later evening meal?

Might have to just do this.
Thank you!

Maybe he can come home for a long weekend during reading week and watch it locally with you. I'm pretty sure it's either end of October or beginning of Nov.
To be fair the roads from town to town there are a bit winding and rubbish. I seem to hit traffic lights for road works all the time.

Yeah, this might be an option. Thanks ☺️

Everything arrives late to Aber. Lots of different, independent things going on instead. I'd do something different & watch the film another time. 🤷‍♀️

I definitely wouldn't be driving all the way to Carmarthen!

As others have said, with only one 'big' cinema and the smaller Arts Centre screen, we very rarely get to see films on their opening weekend.

Libanus1877 is a cinema with a restaurant in Borth which is just a few miles out of Aberystwyth. It's showing Venom from Friday 1st November. It's a very small cinema but has comfy seats and a homely feeling. https://libanus1877.com/whats-on-this-week/ Could you move your hotel booking to the following weekend?

By the way, I wouldn't be wasting my time visiting the Butterfly House. Overpriced and underwhelming IMO

Good to know. We won’t bother then. I do love butterflies, but I don’t like wasting money.

We enjoyed it when we went a couple of years ago

Redburnett · 18/10/2024 06:35

With the 20mph speed limit on many roads it will take you forever to drive anywhere in Wales - just spent a few days crawling around North Wales, honestly it is like being in a parade of tortoises.

Theunamedcat · 18/10/2024 06:36

Maybe get him to train it closer to you but in your route so you can meet up watch the film then drive into aber together for food and the hotel

MigGril · 18/10/2024 06:36

Wow they still haven't built another cinema in Aber, the Commodore was the only cinema when I was a student 30 years ago. I did love the break in the middle of long films though so you could go to the toilet. Do they still do that?

I'm local to Aberystwyth. It's just a very rural part of the UK. Only local independent Cinemas here. We all survive fine lol just have to plan things a bit more. The interval for the ice cream kiosk at the Commodore is between the trailers and the film. Not in the middle of the film.
