It's surely not controversial to think that having bishops in the House of Lords is a ridiculous anachronism?

'Creeping secularism'? Bring it on. I'd like to see galloping secularism.

Well not as much as having a Monarch ....

'Creeping' suggests some insidious, negative thing rather than common sense. Religion has no place in governments.

Though this specific thing misses the point. The entire house of lords is an embarrassing anachronism.

Yes, I think the monarchy should be speedily dismantled.

Yes, absolutely. Have a look around at what other countries have in the second houses of their parliament, if they have one, and do some version of that.

I'm still studying to be a tabloid journalist. I'm still working on how to make headlines as click baity as possible.

Gimme a break !

I want secularism now, not creeping in. And I know many religious people who agree.

How about "Tories declare WAR on CHRISTIANITY as Muslim immigrants FLOOD the countryside"?

Excellent. The Sun would hire you, only all their headlines are now written by AIs trained to be racist, sexist and xenophobic.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 16/10/2024 11:10

The house of lords needs to go, the whole idea of having one house of unelected lords in any position of power is ridiculous, especially since its rife with corruption and cronyism.
I don't see it happening anytime soon since its full of peers from both sides of the house.

Oh, and if someone would make a TV series about The Sun's AI developing consciousness and realising the politics of the rag that it works for are abhorrent and starting a rebellion of sapient AIs against media misinformation, I will watch the hell out of it.

If this thread gains traction, I think everybody should make sure they know what secularism means before joining in. It saves time.

StaunchMomma · 16/10/2024 11:22

Good. The majority of the people in this country are not Christian, nor does religion belong in politics.

That's is totally against the journalism studies I'm taking. You never define what you are talking about. Otherwise there is very little chance of a slanging match.

Of course an alternative to removing Anglican bishops, is to invite all sky fairy representatives into the tent.

But they have to wear badges that say SKY FAIRY REPRESENTATIVE.

Gosh I thought the bishops had been kicked out years ago. How depressing they are still there.

Abolition of faith schools next please

Thats completely different. We have no choice currently about bishops in the HoL but you dont have to send your choice to a faith school. The option should still be there for those of us that want too though.

CurlewKate · 16/10/2024 13:10

@Lorelaigilmore88 "you dont have to send your choice to a faith school. The option should still be there for those of us that want too though"

  1. In many cases I don't.
  1. Why? I don't have the choice of an atheist school!

Education and faith shouldn't be mixed. You can teach your child about religion at home. Schools should provide a balanced education. It's not about your rights, it's about the child's rights.

Happyinarcon · 16/10/2024 14:03

I am Christian, but I have a sneaking suspicion the government would be as corrupt and dysfunctional with or without the bishops
