What smell hits right to your soul and takes you somewhere else?

I know the title probably sounds like I'm on drugs or something! 😂
I've had a truly terrible 13 hours at work, stressed to the max, upsetting all round. I'm sitting on the sofa and just opened the window a crack to get some fresh air, and the smell of a wood burner is creeping in.
I cannot explain it but that smell just calms my very soul. When I breathe that smell in I'm literally outdoors in the middle of nowhere, possibly where I grew up, possibly some imagined fantasy world. I am completely free. When I die, I want to be somewhere breathing that scent!
Does anyone else have a smell that has that effect on them?
Once again, I must stress, I am not. On. Drugs. 😂😂 Just been a very trying day!

One of my exs always smelt really clean, but sexy. It turned out that he wore CK One.

Crushed fresh mint reminds me of my Dad making mint sauce for our roast lamb and new mown grass of him mowing our lawn every Saturday.

Fresh coffee beans being ground reminds me of being a schoolgirl and walking the long way round so I could smell it outside a special shop in Tunbridge Wells. Now grind my own beans every morning. Yum.

overpowering spicy youth Dew and stale fag ash reminds me of my DM.

Patchouli oil reminds me of hilarious times with hippy friends at school when our headmaster tried to ban it by saying ‘No more petunia perfume in my school!’😂

Hyacinths and the smell of a sweetshop remind me of my beloved Granny.

Sun warmed cedarwood reminds me of brass band practice hall and making music with my Dad.

Your bandroom didn't smell of valve oil and musty carpet?

Tomato plants. Takes me straight back to my childhood and being with my grandad in the greenhouse.

Ladyof2024 · 17/10/2024 02:12

The smell of apricot jam instantly transports me back to 1960s Spain when I was a child.

Ruthietuthie · 17/10/2024 02:33

Pears soap will forever remind me of my grandma and her lovely clean house. I used to love staying the night, having a bath with pears soap, getting dressed in front of the fire, then sleeping in a bed warmed by an electric blanket.

Australia.

It sounds odd that a country has a smell but Australia does and it is beautiful.

New York city does too. A mix of smoke and syrup 🥰

Not sure what the smell is exactly, maybe lavender and something else but it's the smell of the national trust shop. We always used to stop at a national trust property for a picnic when we had nearly got to our holiday cottage. So that smell always reminds me of that beginning of the holidays feeling.

What a lovely thread, thanks @FknOmniShambles .

Mine is a rarely smelt combination these days, but just occasionally on holiday, I'll get a whiff. It is cigarettes, alcohol and dry ice. OMG, what a scent. I can literally feel my pulse raise with the excitement of a good night out clubbing back in the olden days when everyone smoked and drank on a night out. Makes me feel young again.

HappyDane · 17/10/2024 10:02

I don't smoke and absolutely detest the smell. Except that it reminds me of my grandparents, so I also love it. Especially the faded tobacco smell embedded in the things I have that used to belong to them, like the pack of mini playing cards that had a permanent home in a basket on their coffee table in the TV sitting room - I'll take it out every so often and inhale a memory of happy times.❤️

Me too. I've never smoked and hate the smell of fag smoke. But Virginia Gold Blend tobacco is the heavenly smell of my Dad's pipe.

safxxx- so sorry for your loss ❤️

This is a lovely thread: for me, Estée Lauder White Linen as my newborn was fastened to me for the first few months and he always smelled of it. And Morrisons nappy sacks- transports me back to when all mine were babies.
The smell of aeroplane fuel/hot airport smell reminds me of my first holiday to Greece. And the smell of Retsina 😃

Coal fire smoke smell on an icy cold day = winters in Scotland as a child.

Fridaysgirl17 · 17/10/2024 12:08

Elizabeth Arden Red Door immediately transports me back to my mom (who passed 2 years ago),just sitting talking to her,her being here. My dad has kept her last bottle she had & every now & again I'll just smell it

Pineapple and coconut. Drinking Malibu in Magaluf, 1982. Everytime

SurelySmartie · 17/10/2024 12:19

Earlier this year I was walking down a road with a lot of blossom trees and I smelt one of them and it had a very specific gorgeous flowery scent. I don’t know exactly what it was as most cherry blossom don’t have a scent but it immediately took me back to being a child in long hot summers and my old primary school which must have had similar trees around.

I was transported there in the moment that it evoked and it was quite startling!

HappyDane · 17/10/2024 12:26

@SurelySmartie that happens for me with Elderflower, and also with Dog Rose. Transports me back to beautiful summer days back in Denmark.

Petrine · 17/10/2024 12:27

What a lovely thread.

I’m another who loves the smell of wood smoke, especially on a cold still evening.

ButtSurgery · 17/10/2024 12:27

I've got my granny's faux pearl necklace. I don't wear it, but occasionally open the box because it smells of her!
