What smell hits right to your soul and takes you somewhere else?

I know the title probably sounds like I'm on drugs or something! 😂
I've had a truly terrible 13 hours at work, stressed to the max, upsetting all round. I'm sitting on the sofa and just opened the window a crack to get some fresh air, and the smell of a wood burner is creeping in.
I cannot explain it but that smell just calms my very soul. When I breathe that smell in I'm literally outdoors in the middle of nowhere, possibly where I grew up, possibly some imagined fantasy world. I am completely free. When I die, I want to be somewhere breathing that scent!
Does anyone else have a smell that has that effect on them?
Once again, I must stress, I am not. On. Drugs. 😂😂 Just been a very trying day!

The scent of dried fruit.

nivea suncream. Smells of childhood

quirkychick · 16/10/2024 19:07

Body Shop glycerine apple soap, back to being a student again, as it's what I used to use.

Honeysuckle and tomato plants, our childhood garden.

Bonfire/wood smoke, fireworks childhood excitement about Bonfire Night, autumn and birthdays and Christmas around the corner.

mathanxiety · 16/10/2024 19:11

Coffee and freshly baked yeast bread - the home of a lovely aunt.
Cigarette smoke, coffee, oil paints - the home of another lovely aunt.
Beeswax polish, roast dinners, imperial leather soap, roses - the home of one of my grandmothers.
Hot pine trees - same grandmother.
Fresh peaches and a warm greenhouse in late summer - same.
Freshly baked bown bread and shortbread - my other grandmother.

Sea breezes - my childhood home, and holidays.

Turf smoke and rain - the west of Ireland.

mathanxiety · 16/10/2024 19:15

Smell of wet leaves - autumn walks as a child.
Coty L'aimant, and Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass deodorant - my mum.
4-7-11 cologne, leather, and cigarette smoke bring me back to the 70s.

Hedjwitch · 16/10/2024 19:22

Nothing any more since Covid 5 months ago!! But before that it would have been frankincense resin.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 16/10/2024 19:26

A coal fire burning instantly takes me back to the 80’s, to the tiny little pit cottage in the north east mining village with my grandad, toasting slices of stottie bread with the long toasting fork. Or walks up to the allotment (past the pub for a swift one naturally)

shellyleppard · 16/10/2024 19:28

Op i love the smell of coal fires. Always have found them cosy and relaxing x

Dolallytats · 16/10/2024 19:43

The smell of a freshly lit cigarette takes me back to teenage evenings out with friends to whatever pub/rock night was on. Carefree fun days before I became an agoraphobic.
The Autumn smell is glorious.
Some pressed powders remind me of my lovely nanny.

Yes!! But the tinsel has to have been in the loft for at least 12 months to get that smell.

I've got two bears that were my Grandma's from.the 1900s that have that smell

Ihateboris · 16/10/2024 19:54

The smell of horse shit Grin...takes me right back to my childhood when every waking hour was spent horse riding. Happy memories

Someone bought me a bottle of Badedas when I was having my first DC, now when I smell it, it takes me back to having newborns which was such a happy time for me.

Yes! My baby is only 7 months old but the association of this smell is so strong. Having a bath with it after getting home from the hospital with my newborn is one of the happiest moments of my life. The smell will always be really special to me.

Mothercare sun cream - childhood holidays
The smell of the suitcases when Mum and Dad got them down before the summer holiday. Just that smell made us excited.
Agree re the smell of Christmas decorations too.
The smell of our front room came to me the other day and I was instantly back in about 1978 aged 3.

FindingMeno · 16/10/2024 20:16

Gauloise cigarettes.
Reminds me of being young and cool and the world being my oyster.

Yearsyonder · 16/10/2024 20:23

Creosote. Takes me back instantly to my childhood. Lovely memories of playing outside.

goingtohellinahandcart · 16/10/2024 20:42

Mothballs, takes me back to my grandparent's house when I was a child

flowersintheatticus · 16/10/2024 20:50

Lime tree leaves, back to a holiday in Greece when I was about 4.

BurntBroccoli · 16/10/2024 20:55

Definitely that Autumn smell, especially near big piles of leaves. Reminds me of walking home from school through a little wooded area kicking the leaves as I went.
That plus the smell of a coal fire takes me right back.
Petrichor.

@minipie a young lad walked past me wearing CK One today! Took me back 20 years.

I still wear it and my 20 year old son quite likes it! Maybe it's having a comeback! Retro late 90s are in at the moment!

abracadabra1980 · 16/10/2024 21:03

Hay in an old fashioned pet shop. Best smell ever.
Ponies and leather saddles
Puppy breath
Coal tar soap
Dove soap

hexsnidgett · 16/10/2024 21:07

Guinea pigs and sawdust, just pulls me back to being 7 years old. My happy rural childhood.

ladymalfoy45 · 16/10/2024 21:15

Chinese BBQ spare ribs but without the sauce.
Reminds me of when me and DS would stay at Dads on a Friday night.
Also the smell of swimming pools. Wed go swimming with Dad after he'd picked us up then go for a Chinese takeaway away. We were allowed three prawn crackers each in the car on the way back home to his then I'd have my spare ribs,DS her chicken fried rice and Dad would have

Beef and Black bean sauce with soft noodles.
When we have a Chinese Dad will always ask if remember swimming and a take away.
Bay Rhum reminds me of my grandad and the shipping forecast reminds me of my nan.

OnlyFrench · 16/10/2024 21:46

That's another one, chlorine mingled with Friday fish and chips!

Xtraincome · 16/10/2024 21:55

Cold mornings - reminds me of pushing my DDs in buggies when they were babies. They are " -ber"babies and I adore cold weather, was very Scandinavian in some ways 😆 loved a cold walk with them all bundled up.
