What smell hits right to your soul and takes you somewhere else?

I know the title probably sounds like I'm on drugs or something! 😂
I've had a truly terrible 13 hours at work, stressed to the max, upsetting all round. I'm sitting on the sofa and just opened the window a crack to get some fresh air, and the smell of a wood burner is creeping in.
I cannot explain it but that smell just calms my very soul. When I breathe that smell in I'm literally outdoors in the middle of nowhere, possibly where I grew up, possibly some imagined fantasy world. I am completely free. When I die, I want to be somewhere breathing that scent!
Does anyone else have a smell that has that effect on them?
Once again, I must stress, I am not. On. Drugs. 😂😂 Just been a very trying day!

Oh and very fragrant roses - instantly transports me back to my beloved grandparent’s garden which had a giant rose bed in the middle of it 🌹

spartanrunnergirl · 15/10/2024 22:11

Chanel no. 5

My mother wore this when I was a child, and as a child I didn't know it was a perfume, it was just the scent of my mother.

When I was in my early 20s I smelt the perfume for the first time and only then realised the scent of my mother was this no. 5. I was instantly taken back to being a little girl being hugged and kissed good night by my mummy.

I always have a bottle now, and when I need a bit of bravery and confidence I wear it and my mum is with me.

Boiling vegetables and roasted meat in a steamy kitchen on a Sunday afternoon in the mid 90s.

The smell of the Christmas decorations mixed with the smell of pine trees.

The completely indescribable unique smell of my lovely grandma's house which I will sadly never smell again. I have a blanket from her house but over the years the smell has faded.

Same as PPs, also the general horsey smell which brings back such lovely memories of my teen years.

D&G Aftershave - reminds me of the day I first met my husband and takes me right back to our first conversation.

Moonlightdust · 15/10/2024 22:14

Also the old Avon book! My mum used to deliver them for a while - I loved that perfumed fragrance smell on the paper!

Heinz tomato soup - reminds me of cosy rainy childhood days.

Claysta · 15/10/2024 22:15

Opium perfume - my late DM wore this on a night out, one whiff and I am transported back to being small, with a babysitter and watching my parents go out on a Saturday ..

HappyDane · 15/10/2024 22:17

Butter frying also instantly reminds me of my grandmother.

FrogJump123 · 15/10/2024 22:18

The smell of the woods, reminds me of my Dad coming home on a Saturday evening and brushing my hair while listening to the football scores.
Also CK One, takes me back to being fifteen, reminding me of my first boyfriend. So carefree back then.

Infradig · 15/10/2024 22:22

The smell of Anne French cleanser used to take me right back to being about fourteen. I'd love to smell the original smell one more time.

Patienceinshortsupply · 15/10/2024 22:23

Mine is the smell of boiling tar. Reminds me of when I had whooping cough and my Dad sat with me inside his garden shed boiling up a pot of it .. such a weirdly good memory. If I see roadworks anywhere with tarmac, I have to open the window and just inhale Grin

venusina · 15/10/2024 22:23

The smell when you walk into an aeroplane. It a bit of a fusty smell but it takes me back to going on holidays as a child. Same for suntan lotion. That coconutty smell instantly makes me feel like I'm in Spain

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 15/10/2024 22:24

Night blooming jasmine... one house on my bike route has it growing on its walls and in summer, when I cycle past, I get teary eyed and emotional just smelling it. I'm transported back to my childhood, where the night blooming jasmine grew outside my bedroom window and the sound of crickets and coyotes were part of my night's sleep.

Wood smoke also makes me tear up. Evokes so many memories.

A forest floor carpeted in pine needles gives off the most magnificent scent- I close my eyes and I'm back with my dad and my brother again.

Garlic and tomatoes, simmering on the hob (and the smell in the kitchen when I wake up next morning), always brings me back to my young adulthood when I was living in Italy and really learning to cook.
Lavender... France (where I've spent so much time over the past 30 years and every memory is a wonderful one).

Paris by YSL (my mother's perfume in the 80s and 90s) and 4711 cologne water, my dad's scent, which I also wear.

Oh how can I forget, Nivea after sun! Nivea after sun... ahhh the best.

Oganesson118 · 15/10/2024 22:25

The smell of lilac, or the little white flowers on privet hedges take me baxk
to playing in my grandparents’ garden or the field next
to it.

YorkieTheRabbit · 15/10/2024 22:28

Honeysuckle, lavender and night scented stocks, they all remind me of visiting my great uncle in Devon. He had the most beautiful garden.
I have lots of them in my own now and there’s something wonderful about the early morning honeysuckle fragrance, it makes me so happy.

Treacle sponge, brings many memories, none of them good.

Sherry, my lovely grandma

mjf981 · 15/10/2024 22:29

Heavy drops of rain at the beginning of a storm on dusty dry ground. Wind starting to pick up. Nothing beats the smell just before a massive Prairie thunderstorm.

cookiebee · 15/10/2024 22:29

Oil of ulay (as I think it was back then), coco and liquorice allsorts, takes me back to my nan and great aunt looking after me overnight when my parents went to the pub. The old gas fire had a smell all of its own as well, and her flat smelled like damp and soap from the bathroom off the hall. It makes me happy to smell all of those smells, mind you, the pair of them had mouths like bloody sailors, so not quite the werthers originals ad you might imagine 😂

Fizzygoo · 15/10/2024 22:31

Wet stinging nettles and mossy tree trunks takes me back to being a wild small child and crushed crab apples underfoot

Storynanny1 · 15/10/2024 22:33

Yes to the Autumn smell, especially opening the back door early evening time. It’s the only season I can smell
Harmony hairspray - takes me back to being a teenager in the 1970’s. Getting ready to go to the Friday night youth club.

Storynanny1 · 15/10/2024 22:34

Don’t think you can actually buy harmony hairspray now, but I can still smell it if I close my eyes and think about 1973

Flowersfield · 15/10/2024 22:35

The smell of roses takes me back to my childhood.

The smell of Carex antibacterial hand gel reminds me of Covid era Yuk! (horrible times)

Horseskeepmesane · 15/10/2024 22:42

My children-still have the same baby smell when they wake up 💗🩵

Horses, hay, haylage, barns, horse food, leather tack, the muck heap, tack room (get the theme??)

The smell of old my little pony dolls (vanilla, plastic, pure euphoria!!)

vosene shamooo

morrisons baby wipes (their own brand) had them for both my kids in 2017/18 when babies, takes me back instantly to that magical time.

FatLarrysBanned · 15/10/2024 22:43

The scent of Buddleia - I'm 3 years old waiting behind a big wire fence for my mum to collect me from nursery (or playgroup as it was called then)

Play Doh takes me back to an amazing Christmas day when I got the mop top haircutting set. That would have been my only present. I felt like I'd won the lottery.

Old Spice/Brut and Malboro ciggies - my dad. Lest said about him the better.

Poison perfume and Embassy ciggies - my nana. Sprayed liberally with Elnett hairspray for her bingo nights.

Coty L'Aimant - my lovely mum

Anything dewbery /white musk/vanilla - spending our money in the bodyshop as a teenager. Also the sticky awful lip balms in a glass pot which were the height of sophistication - no lypsyls for us - kiwi flavour was the best.

Hyacinths- growing them in a jam jar on a sunny window sill in 4th year juniors. Just water, no soil.

The smell of warm milk in tiny bottle as the straw pierced the foil lid in infants before we had a nap on the gym mats.

Smartiepants79 · 15/10/2024 22:45

A very specific floral talc smell, I think it’s probably Lily of the valley. Brings me back to my grandparents house, her drawers smelled of it. Her stuff still
smelled of to when we were sorting it all out when she went into her care home.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 15/10/2024 22:46

The Disney H2O moisturiser from our hotel room. It immediately puts me right back into Disney world! Can't wait to smell the Disney smell again.

FlyingontheGround · 15/10/2024 22:47

Someone bought me a bottle of Badedas when I was having my first DC, now when I smell it, it takes me back to having newborns which was such a happy time for me.
