Alexa....why didn't I know this

With my peri menopause over active brain I have discovered the benefits of going to sleep listening to an audiobook.

I ask Alexa to set a timer and back she booms 'okay I'll switch off in 20 minutes' waking up my husband and probably annoying the neighbours.

It has taken me until this week to realise that if I whisper the instruction, she whispers too.

I'm guessing this is well known and I'm just dim. So what obvious thing that improves life a little has it taken you until now to realise?

Ask her to fart.

FeatherBoat · 13/10/2024 20:45

You can switch off her responses altogether.

You are right, she is a boomer. 📣

If you whisper in a bad fake French accent will she do that too?

Well I never knew this. I’m going to tell my partner as I’m sick of being woken up by both him and Alexa. It’s like there’s 3 of us in this relationship.

I just said "bonjour" to mine and she replied "Bonjour, mon petit chou"

Your french impression is obviously better than mine

Apparently not because after that I asked "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?" And she replied "Hmm, I don't know that one"

Now it might just be that she doesn't want to answer an inappropriate question, but it could also be my very northern accent and slurred speech after half a bottle of wine

Popopopipipi · 13/10/2024 21:02

Ask her what the Romans have ever done for us.

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 13/10/2024 21:05

If you have more than one, you can say “Alexa make an announcement” and then she’ll ask you what, and then she’ll play what you’ve said out of all the Alexa’s you have. Really useful if you have them around the house to call family members for mealtimes, etc. If you announce “Dinner’s ready” then she even rings a dinner bell for you!!

Just freaked the children out with a bedtime announcement 🤣

I needed this a week ago when I lost my voice

I'm loving this thread

Crazyeight · 13/10/2024 21:10

I changed mine to the man's voice so I could shout orders at it without feeling misogynistic.

FeatherBoat · 13/10/2024 21:15

I use the announcement function all of the time.

My dd who is at university gets the announcements too as her Alexa is connected to the family amazon account.

Crazyeight · 13/10/2024 21:16

The app is great for announcements. I get on the train to work, leaving DH to do school run so I can send reminders or messages to the DC about their day while I speed away from the chaos.

Ilovesandwiches · 13/10/2024 21:17

I did NOT know this!!
this will be very helpful for me to know though!

AlbertAvocado · 13/10/2024 21:26

I use the announcement but type my announcement on the app. To ensure I get the kids attention I usually start with a few trumpet and fart noises...

WhatWouldHopperDo · 13/10/2024 21:39

DH has set up a sleep routine on the one on our room. You just say 'Alexa, I'm going to sleep'. The light goes out, the white noise kicks in and is on a timer so automatically stops after an hour. She doesn't say a word!

I think perhaps you just went too far too fast. I mean, the ‘Mon petit chou’ wasn’t nothing!

Osirus · 13/10/2024 22:35

My daughter was talking to a friend over the phone and playing video games together at the same time as I had a parcel delivery. I opened the door as Alexa began giving instructions on how to call the Samaritans.

Apparently my daughter had mentioned that she was “going to kill myself” referring to her character in the game and the Alexa seems to have caught on to that phrase. She never use the wake word. A bit embarrassing when taking my parcel 😂

I set up similar except I say 'Alexa goodnight' and she switches the lamp off and plays quiet classical music for 30 mins.

We have a family account too. I was at work one day when I realised I could make announcements and dh was off at home and was in the kitchen where Alexa is, so I announced 'I can see you!'

...2 minutes later my poor Dad text me saying he'd jumped out of his skin because Alexa shouted that she could see him 😂😂

It's also really good to connect your Ring doorbell too if you don't have a chime!

JustSaltPlease · 13/10/2024 23:07

I just tried and she didn't whisper back!
