What do I need from IKEA?

We're going to Ikea tomorrow for a few things. Tell me what else I need to buy that I never thought I would need/didn't know existed/will make my life easier etc.

This. Everyone should have a giant cuddly octopus giving side eye in their life.

Socktopus

This! Game changer!

Hyacinthandrichard · 13/10/2024 08:49

I am so craving a trip there now. I love the veggie meatballs and chips
And sandwich bags
And cutlery - where do all my spoons go?

Ladyof2024 · 13/10/2024 08:50

Some of those really cheap wooden Spice racks. I think they were about four pounds each and amazing bargain full stop there are so many uses for them. I've used them for all kinds of things and yet strangely never as a spice rack

Sandwich bags!
Cinnabuns

In the children’s department, the 10 pack of face cloths.

They are the perfect washable cloth for kitchen jobs. I barely use kitchen roll or J cloths or anything, just use a cheap facecloth and chuck it in the laundry basket when I’m done. 10 is loads for all the jobs across a week, then I do a wash. They last about 6 years of constant washes and are much more environmentally friendly than most alternatives.

I'll raise you on that one... I am still regularly using IKEA children's face cloths which I originally bought just over 10 years ago. Yes a bit ragged around the edges but still going strong!

I think you are all going about this the wrong way.
To get the full IKEA experience you have to go in with a completely blank mind....you are serene....you need nothing.....
Then you take the trolley, just in case you see a few bits. By the end of the 4 mile hike through the store the trolley is full and you have spent £200 on stuff you didn't even know existed before your visit!!
You are physically and mentally exhausted so park the full trolley and try and get some food, the queue is about 20 minutes long and the tray is far too small so you balance all of the plates and hope for the best.
After something to eat and a sit down you head to the check out, you pick up more 'bits' on the way so now you have spent £250 on stuff you didn't know existed.
You finally pay and leave the store to drive 1.5 hrs home, elated with all of the treasures you have found.
I am only allowed to go to IKEA once a year as I have zero self control, so maybe don't listen to me 🤣

One of those Death Star light fittings, I've always wanted one but was disappointed when I realised it's flat pack too. I can't do with the faff of putting it all together.

There's a bar in Ibiza that has them on all their lights must have taken someone ages to do them all.

Christmas wrapping paper.

It's the best wrapping paper. Not to thin. Decent length. Nice patterns. Cheap.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 13/10/2024 09:56

Wine & Prosecco glasses - look way more expensive than they are but cheap to replace when they inevitably get broken!
Bag clips
Picture ledges

AmeliaEarache · 13/10/2024 10:06

That’s good going, @ElaineMarleyThreepwood ! I use three or four a day and I swear they are the most practical things.

I do still have a few muslins kicking about they are about 20 years old but they don’t get as much use.

MinnieCauldwell · 13/10/2024 10:28

Recently bought small size dustpan and brush, bloody brilliant, just use it for brushing up never ending crumbs on work top. I live with a crumb monster, every time I turn around he seems to have cut another slice of crusty bread...I love it now I can get my mini brush out, its the little things...

Shelby1981 · 13/10/2024 10:51

Bag clips, sandwich bags, a Kallax for every room with Drona boxes or other inserts, Trofast for kids stuff, long roll of paper to go on an easel or just on the floor for drawing big, portable drawing board thing that zips open and holds all the pens inside, lego boxes that you can build on, trays, cushions, the cheapest fleece throws...

Shelby1981 · 13/10/2024 10:53

Baby bear to go with the giant one www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/djungelskog-soft-toy-brown-bear-40578532/

I work there, on my way to the chaos now...

Def the Pressa octopus from Home Org
Back scrubber (looks like a belt, not one on a stick) from Bathshop
Mavinn black cat zip up case (pencils/makeup) from Textiles
Slibb bag for washing more fragile items (Home Org)
Spare storage bags, especially the ones that will fit a duvet (Home Org)
Obonas suction storage mini shelves for bathroom.. I find them better than
the bathshop ones (from Kitchens)
Bag of hanging toadstools from the xmas shop
Bees! to hang, large and small, from kids

oldmanandtheangel · 13/10/2024 11:03

And if you go to the MK store, check out all the Russian stock in the bargain corner as it's very discounted, and a lot of the items we also have full price elsewhere in store (obv being that IKEAs in Russia are closed.. MK get their stock) I've been hitting it heavily !

Whatineed · 13/10/2024 11:12

They have dried lavender sachets at the checkout to hang in your wardrobe, called KROPPSVARM.

I usually pick up a few of the glass containers with snap on plastic lids for my lunch batch cooking/freezing.

Only 25 posts in last day…. marginal improvement! 🤭

Clevs · 13/10/2024 16:23

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We've just got back. Didn't buy the main thing we went for which was a chest of drawers (it wasn't really big enough when we saw it in person) but we came back with a few of all your suggestions. These included:

Chopping board containers for scraping peelings and chopped veg straight into.
Gingerbread dough.
Washing up brush.
Mini dustpan and brush.
Meatballs.
Daim cake (tonight's dessert!)
The stretchy silicone lids for opened jars/yoghurt etc. but wish I'd bought more than one packet now.
Christmas wrapping paper.
Frozen potato cakes.
Frozen pancakes.
Couldn't find a Socktopus
Also bought a few Trofast boxes as we have a few gaps in our units (I'm annoyed that the current stock of green ones is different to the ones we have so ended up buying white).
A gingerbread house to assemble & decorate nearer Christmas.
Mulled fruit drink so our six year old can have some whilst we drink the alcoholic version when decorating the tree.
Pan stand as I have limited space to put hot pans at the moment.
We were after a picture but couldn't find one we liked enough.

So a fairly successful trip which also involved hot dogs and cinnamon buns for lunch!

I have plenty of line space, I just find the process of pegging up loads of socks maddening (they're mainly my partner's too, as I rarely wear them). Doesn't sound like the socktopus helps with that.

I love that I can have socks etc hung up before I got outside rather than standing faffing at the line!

@Clevs I've got a few of the smaller original green ones you can have, as I'm changing mine to plain white. I bought these when dc were little so 2007 ish

Greentreesandbushes · 13/10/2024 16:44

The tall brush and pan set. Used to be bluey green now grey
