Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n stated that Ukraine has been a disputed territory for centuries. When asked by a journalist to draw parallels between the 1956 events in Budapest and the war in Ukraine, OrbΓ‘n responded:
"Hungary was never part of the Soviet Union, and there has never been a Russian-speaking community on our territory. Ukraine is a territory that has been contested for centuries, which sets it apart significantly from Hungary."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n stated that President Zelenskyy’s military plan will lead to defeat, and Hungary does not intend to be involved. Speaking on Kossuth radio, OrbΓ‘n reiterated his call for the West to negotiate with Russia and cease military aid to Ukraine.
According to OrbΓ‘n, Budapest believes that the EU, along with Ukraine, is already facing defeat. β€œThe defeated now want to pursue a victory plan. We said we will not participate. You cannot win with this plan; it’s a plan for defeat, not victory. Hungary will not take part in such military strategies and will continue to refrain from supplying weapons to Ukraine,” he asserted.
He added that Zelenskyy’s plan is alarming and urged the EU to change its current approach. β€œThe European Union entered this conflict with a poorly planned and executed strategy, for which the President of the European Commission is mainly responsible. We are losing this war, so the strategy isn’t working. It must changeβ€”not with more war and more dangerous, long-range weapons, but by shifting from a war strategy to a peace strategy. We need a ceasefire and peace talks,” OrbΓ‘n argued.
He also mentioned that he would continue urging Germany’s Chancellor and France’s President to start negotiations with Russia on behalf of the EU to find a resolution.

πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ German Chancellor Olaf Scholz responded angrily to the proposal by Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative opposition and chancellor candidate from the CDU/CSU, to issue an ultimatum to Putin regarding the Taurus missiles.
β€œWhen they say, β€˜If it doesn’t happen, then we’ll do this, then we’ll do that,’ it only creates a false impression of strength. What matters is a clear position and consistency,” Scholz stated.
He also emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Ukraine continues to receive the necessary support.

According to Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers are in eastern Russia, undergoing training to potentially participate in combat in Ukraine. In an interview with The War Zone, Budanov indicated that these troops are expected to be ready for deployment by November 1. The North Korean forces are reportedly set to use Russian equipment and ammunition.
The initial contingent of 2,600 soldiers will be dispatched to the Kursk region, where Ukraine has established a contested bridgehead after intense fighting. The destinations for the remaining North Korean troops remain unspecified. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Combating Disinformation, mentioned that the Kremlin might incorporate North Korean soldiers into β€œBuryat” units to obscure their involvement in active combat.
Natalia Butyrska, associate senior analyst at the New Europe Center, highlighted North Korea’s increasing engagement in the conflict in her article β€œNorth Korea vs. Ukraine: Putin is already in debt to Kim Jong-un.” This growing involvement signals deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia amid the ongoing war.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo announced that Finland will supply Ukraine with a new aid package in the coming months to help the country endure the winter. The package will consist of essential items such as generators, transformers, heating containers, cables, relays, and machinery.

Ukraine is exploring options to attract international investments in its defense industry and is considering the potential resumption of arms exports, according to Defense Minister Umerov. He mentioned that several countries have already shown interest in purchasing Ukrainian missiles, drones, and other weaponry. However, he emphasized that any decision regarding exports would be made collectively by the country’s leadership.
https://t.me/United24media/26029
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin suggested that Ukraine should prioritize the use of its own UAVs for long-range strikes deep into Russian territory rather than relying on Western precision-guided missiles, which are significantly more expensive. He noted that the cost of a single missile can approach a million dollars, depending on the type. In contrast, drones can be produced in large quantities at a lower cost, making them a more cost-effective option. Austin highlighted the potential impact UAVs could have on the battlefield, presenting them as a valuable opportunity for Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated during a press conference at the defense ministers’ meeting that the Alliance does not have evidence confirming the deployment of North Korean soldiers in the war against Ukraine.
He acknowledged that this is NATO’s current official position, and no active involvement by North Korean troops has been confirmed. However, he noted that the situation may evolve, and he plans to discuss the matter with South Korean authorities, who initially reported the deployment, to gather more information and verify the claims.

Vladimir Putin announced he would not attend the G20 summit in Brazil. Since Brazil is a party to the Rome Statute, it would be obliged to arrest him based on the International Criminal Court’s warrant. When asked whether he feared being arrested, Putin deflected by rhetorically asking if he would intentionally disrupt the forum’s proceedings, suggesting his decision was aimed at avoiding such a controversy.

women from Africa and forced them to assemble drones
The plant in question is the β€œAlabuga” drone manufacturing facility in Russia’s Tatarstan. It was only upon arrival that the women discovered they would be manufacturing drones, which Russia uses to attack Ukraine.

A total of 44 drones were lost from radar tracking, and two others headed towards Belarus.
Currently, around 10 drones remain in the airspace over central regions, and active defensive measures are ongoing.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈThere is currently no consensus within NATO on inviting Ukraine to join the Alliance, according to the White House.
The discussion is ongoing. However, a Biden administration official noted that in July, all 32 allies reaffirmed that Ukraine is on an irreversible path toward membership.
β€œThe question now is about the tactics to encourage this path and how to reach a consensus on the next steps,” the official stated.

❗️Approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers are being trained in Russia for the war against Ukraine, according to Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Western officials discussing the idea of Ukraine making territorial concessions in exchange for NATO membership have not approached him directly about the matter because they are afraid.
He urged these officials to openly put this proposal β€œon the table” before the Ukrainian people.

Ukraine’s defense partners have shown interest in the issue of mobilizing 18–25-year-olds, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated
β€œSometimes there are discussions where they want to understand why we aren’t recruiting or mobilizing people aged 18 to 25. We explain that this is a decision by the Verkhovna Rada, which allowed us to mobilize from ages 25 to 60. They are simply curious about why Ukraine makes such decisions,” he noted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the American elections will be a decisive moment for Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.
β€œI don’t know what the proposal to us will be after the elections. We see three different paths forward,” Zelensky emphasized.
He mentioned that one path involves continued support, but allies still β€œfear some risks.” The other two scenarios depend on who wins the election: Harris or Trump.
β–ͺ️Trump has criticized U.S. military aid to Ukraine and said he would settle the conflict once elected. Harris has promised to consider Ukraine’s NATO membership in the future.
https://t.me/liveukraine_media/25417
During Biden’s visit to Berlin, Chancellor Scholz emphasized the shared responsibility of both countries for maintaining peace.
β€œWe are making sure that NATO does not become a party to the war, so that this conflict does not lead to a much larger catastrophe,” the German leader stated.
https://t.me/liveukraine_media/25418
πŸ‡°πŸ‡΅NATO has no evidence that North Korea has sent its soldiers to fight against Ukraine, stated Secretary-General Mark Rutte during a press conference at the defense ministers’ meeting.
β€œOur official position at the moment is that we cannot confirm reports that North Korea is actively involved in the war with its soldiers,” said the Secretary-General.
He added that the situation may change, so he will discuss the matter with South Korean authorities, who reported the deployment of North Korean military personnel to Russia, β€œto obtain all the evidence.”
https://t.me/liveukraine_media/25419
❗️Russian forces executed a wounded Ukrainian soldier in the Donetsk region.
The execution likely occurred in the Bakhmut sector. The Ukrainian soldier had sustained injuries, and sometime later, Russian troops took control of the building where he was located, capturing him.
The unarmed soldier was shot while lying on the ground. The incident is preliminarily reported to have taken place on September 6, 2024, around 10:00 near the Fenolny plant in the village of Niu York. Prosecutors are investigating the violation of the laws and customs of war.

Ukraine transferred 4,200 tactical nuclear munitions to Russia. (WTF)
Why? Pressure from both the West and Russia at the same time, debts to Russia, fear of Ukrainians after the Chornobyl accident, and rejection of nuclear weapons as such, lack of money and technology to maintain a nuclear arsenal.
Many people took Zelensky's words about nuclear weapons today as a hint that Ukraine could restore its nuclear status. But he didn't say that, listen carefully.
However, an alternative history is very interesting, no doubt about it.

Volodymyr Zelensky gave an interview discussing the Victory Plan following recent international meetings. Here are the main points:
πŸ”» According to Zelensky, Germany remains skeptical about Ukraine's NATO membership. However, "we are closer to NATO with the U.S. than ever before," the president believes.
πŸ”» Providing long-range weapons to Ukraine remains the "most sensitive" issue for Germany.
πŸ”» Ukraine has agreed with the U.S. that a new aid package worth $500-750 million will now be provided every two to three weeks.
πŸ”» The brigade currently training in France will return to Ukraine by the end of November.
πŸ”» Western partners have no alternative way to end the war. Thus, the Victory Plan is the only current option.
πŸ”» No NATO country fully knows what will happen if war breaks out on the territory of a member state, Zelensky says. "How will NATO countries act? God willing, together."
πŸ”» Ukraine is awaiting feedback from the White House on the Victory Plan.
πŸ”» Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons but did not receive real protection, and the guarantors who signed the Budapest Memorandum did not stop Russia in 2014. Hence, Ukraine insists on NATO membership.
πŸ”» U.S. policy following the presidential election will affect the course or end of the war, but no one can predict exactly how.
πŸ”» The secret parts of the Victory Plan have not been shared with countries that do not support Ukraine or oppose providing weapons.
πŸ”» Partners want Ukraine to lower the conscription age to 18, but the country has no plans to make such changes.
πŸ”» The economic draft exemption models presented to Zelensky are "not very fair" in his view. Finding a fair model is a task for the prime minister and the Ministry of Economy.

I am afraid that I have to go into hospital for just over two weeks from Friday - all will be well, but this has to be done. As I can't really work on a laptop I'm afraid that after tomorrow I can't do the roundups.

I will of course start again as soon as I'm back!

Hope you have a swift recovery (and hope the hospital food is decent!)

Key Takeaways:

  • South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported that North Korea transferred roughly 1,500 North Korean special forces to eastern Russia, where they are reportedly training before deploying to participate in Russia's war against Ukraine.
  • A number of sources provided footage purporting to substantiate these intelligence reports. The footage appears consistent with reports of North Korean troop deployments to Russia but does not independently validate the intelligence reports.
  • Russian forces appear to be further intensifying mechanized activity in western Donetsk Oblast amid initial reports of the start of autumnal muddy ground conditions.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to signal his disinterest in meaningful peace negotiations with Ukraine while using the upcoming BRICS summit to legitimize Kremlin information operations falsely portraying Ukraine as unwilling to negotiate.
  • Putin used ongoing conversations about security guarantees in Ukraine's Victory Plan to further boilerplate nuclear saber-ratting information operations that aim to discredit Ukraine to its Western partners and prevent Western aid to Ukraine.
  • Western partners continue to announce new military assistance to Ukraine.
  • The US Department of State (DoS) program Rewards for Justice offered a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the identification or location of foreigners involved in interfering in US elections, including members of prominent Kremlin-awarded milblogger channel Rybar.
  • Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets reported on October 18 that Ukraine has recorded more than 100 confirmed cases of Russian forces executing Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) amid a recent theater-wide increase in Russian executions of Ukrainian POWs.
  • Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Kupyansk, Kreminna, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.

Denmark provided Ukraine with 118% of its annual defense budget. Sweden - 112%.
Of course, small countries, countries with small armies, have fewer opportunities to help Ukraine than the United States or Germany. Denmark's aid will never match the US in absolute terms. However, looking at how a country's aid correlates with its capabilities and defense spending is interesting.
The top five leaders look like this: Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, the Netherlands, and Norway.
US military aid accounts for almost 8% of its defense budget.

Denmark provided Ukraine with 118% of its annual defense budget. Sweden - 112%. Of course, small countries, countries with small armies, have fewer opportunities to help Ukraine than the United States or Germany. Denmark's aid will never match the US...

I must say for everything that’s gone on I did not have North Korea invading Europe on my 2024 bingo card. I can’t believe it’s not front page news!

I know. You'd think it would be headlines.

My first thought, was how many will be calling the surrender hotline so they don't have to go back.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/10/2024 18:52

That would be a neat wheeze on their parts, wouldn't it. Much less scary than having to escape via China.

@Igotjelly is astounding, isn't it, North Korea putting boots on the ground in Ukraine. Why isn't there greater outrage? So many redlines have been crossed (both in Ukraine and Middle East) I think people have become immune to the enormity of these world conflicts.

I wonder how effective the N.Korean troops will be to Russia with the language difference. How much of this is psyops to discourage Ukrainians from mobilising. The increase in Russian troops killing Ukrainian POWs in the field (rather than capture them for the POW exchange fund) is apparently meant as a deterrent for Ukrainians conscription. There are reports of Ukraine enlistment officers getting more forceful in their recruitment so could be Russia is responding to that.

I don't know what is happening (how could I). I just wish Ukraine's allies could get more weapons, ammo and defence into Ukraine faster ahead of the winter and slow the Russian advance.

North Korea will have a problem with their troops going AWOL and deserting and seeking asylum. Wonder if they will call in the Chechens to shoot them in the back, learning from the Russians of course.

Igotjelly · 19/10/2024 21:10

I think their impact on the ground will be fairly minimal, it’s tiny numbers when you look at how many Russia has already lost and I imagine they’ll have zero combat experience.

The impact in terms of geopolitics and perception of shattered red lines I think is far more worrying.
