Honestly, the world would be a far better place if the Daily Mail disappeared forever. Their reporting is grossly irresponsible and it’s staggering that some people suspend all critical thinking when they read it. They should stick to coverage of β€˜side boobs’, house prices and various Z list celebs supposedly β€œshowing (insert ex partner here) what they are missing”.

Heh heh

My DD has come home from school today terrified because someone told her we're all about to die (she's 12!) Fuck Putin and all of his enablers, I hate him.

I feel slightly anxious myself (which I'm embarrassed to admit) so struggling to reassure her :(

I don’t have kids but I would hope that schools are providing some context and space for discussion about Ukraine. In the meantime, would it help your daughter to know that this decision will have been very carefully risk assessed and deliberated? Or could you point out that there are other players on the field, such as India, China and Saudi Arabia who Putin doesn’t want to upset?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/11/2024 17:24

If people really took the Daily Mail scare stories seriously they'd never be able to eat or touch anything, because EVERYTHING gives you cancer according to the Daily Mail.

Well, all right, maybe not quite everything, but it's an extensive list: https://www.anorak.co.uk/288298/tabloids/the-daily-mails-list-of-things-that-give-you-cancer-from-a-to-z.html

You know what I feel if there was any serious threat of nuclear warfare anywhere the markets would feel it. I assume people would start looking at stable assets like gold etc. and the uncertainly would depress shares.

The markets never moved with Putin's repetitive bluster.

Sky News were reporting today that they’ve been jittery.

mids2019 · 19/11/2024 17:58

I think it's a good dip to buy into if your into that sort of thing?

The world essentially economically is unchanged and so I don't understand the change in market sentiment. It helps Putin maybe in terms of people going for commodities and obviously lowering US stocks is an fu to Biden.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/11/2024 18:00

Oh. And there I was thinking the markets were jittery because Trump was elected.

It may well be, I’m certainly no markets expert! Only know what Sky was telling me πŸ˜‚

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 19/11/2024 18:04

I suspect Sky make their money out of news, and the scarier the news the better from their point of view. See "Daily Mail".

heldinadream · 19/11/2024 19:18

Channel 4 news just opened with moving footage of the Ukrainian Parliament standing in reflection, heads bowed.

@Igotjelly So sorry to hear that your DD is upset. I remember vividly what it's like being a scared and upset 12 year old.
Sending you and her virtual love and support. πŸ’ž

It looks like there's a ship detained for breaking the cable near Finland. It's Chinese

Stocks in the US have been trading sideways or down because Trump is going to run up the deficit, which will cause bond yields to rise. That's bad for stocks, because higher yields make bonds a more attractive investment, at least in the short run.

Trump's tariffs will also cause inflation to rise, which is also bad for stocks. It lowers the "real return" from investments in shares.

Rumoured to be the Yi Peng 3..according to one maritime tracking site it is currently stationary in the Kattegat with at least one Danish Naval vessel in close proximity.

Just a moment of solidarity and thanks to @MagicFox fot keeping these threads going and @DucklingSwimmingInstructress @blueshoes @DesdamonasHandkerchief and others for constant updates.

i don’t honestly think things are going to substantially change, but this is a sign to Ukraine that partners are with them, and a warning to Trump to hold firm.

Igotjelly · 20/11/2024 07:28

The US embassy has temporarily closed in Kyiv in anticipation of a β€˜significant air attack’ - Putin is raging and he’s going to make the poor Ukrainians suffer isn’t he 😭

Much thanks to those who sent love to DD, she had terrible nightmares last night and barely slept. Nothing compared to the poor Ukrainians of course but Putin is making children suffer worldwide, pure evil.

Your poor daughter 😭 They are so impressionable at that age, I really feel for her and you. Don’t know if the school would do anything other than generic mental health support. In the early days of the war my daughter was the same age as yours and of course they had supported her somewhat but mostly support was given (quite rightly) to the Ukrainian students who had started to arrive under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

MagicFox · 20/11/2024 08:30

@Igotjelly i think the best thing you can do is give her information. Make it clear to her how strong NATO is, how often these threats have been made. Tell her we're living in the safest time in history. However shaky these things might actually be, that's what she probably needs to hear. I say this as somebody who was a horribly anxious child and still is a pretty anxious adult! Love to you both x

I have been quietly reading all your posts in the background in the past couple of months, not much to contribute. I have been to visit my Ukrainian family in Germany in the half term, they are thriving but longing to return home… Being from Irpin it’s not possible yet.

The questions I have playing on my mind are - why now? Have Ukrainians been deemed to have suffered enough after 1000 days to finally be granted permission to strike into Russia with western weapons?
And - Is this enough? Or too little too late?

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 20/11/2024 08:38

Hi guys, long time no see, but still around.

I see the Daily Mail is reporting that swedes are being told to prepare for war. Absolute fearmongering bollocks (again).

Sweden has reissued it's 'preparedness' booklet to all households as it was last issued 5 years ago and should be issued every 5 years. It used to be in the front of the phone book, so issued every year.

I might go out Monday after next and record the quarterly test of 'Hesa Fredrik' and send it to them so they absolutely lose their shit.

Thanks everyone, you've actually made me tear up a bit. I hate seeing her suffer. I'm very vocal in my support for Ukraine so I guess she's maybe overexposed so might need to check myself there a bit.

@Mb76 really feel for your loved ones, it must be soul destroying. Particularly with all the speak of freezing the front lines and the potential they might never be able to return. My friend from Kharkiv feels very similar.

@BringBackCoffeeCreams how is your DH feeling about it all (and you!) I'll admit that the recent headlines have rattled me slightly and I hate that I've let it!
