So I dont understand the North Korea and South Korea situation at all but am I right to be concerned that Ukraine has now been (technically) invaded by two nuclear powers and that South Korea's assistance could mean that that dispute gets played put on Ukraine soil?

MagicFox · 01/11/2024 19:43

In short, yes

OP posts:
MagicFox · 01/11/2024 19:43

But let's wait and see what actually happens with the NK troops

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 01/11/2024 20:12

There are reliable reports that the NK's are currently fighting in Kursk, but I've seen nothing to indicate that they are in Ukraine currently.

Putin may not want to use them in Ukraine, as it would open the door to other countries providing troops to Ukraine. And with only 10-12k troops, there aren't enough to do both.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 01/11/2024 23:25

Ah OK. My friend in Kharkiv said some days ago that a certain assault brigade had confirmed North Korean involvement but maybe that was in Kursk as you say.

United24 Media:

πŸ”Ή In October, Russian forces launched a total of 2,023 Shahed attack drones and other unidentified types of drones over Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted and destroyed 1,185 of these drones, while 738 drones were lost to location tracking, and 29 exited Ukrainian airspace.

Since the beginning of 2024, Russia has deployed 6,987 drones in attacks targeting Ukrainian civilian and critical infrastructure.

πŸŽͺ At a recent meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui pledged that North Korea would β€œstand firmly alongside Russian comrades” and expressed confidence in the β€œvictory” of the Russian military.

During her visit to Moscow, Choe stated that from the onset of Russia’s β€œspecial operation,” Kim Jong-un, the DPRK’s head of state, directed North Korea to β€œsupport and assist the Russian army and people in their β€˜holy war,’ unwavering and with full force.”

πŸ”Έ South Korea’s Democratic Party (DPK) has strongly opposed the government’s potential plan to send a team of military advisers or intelligence representatives to Ukraine, warning of potential impeachment proceedings against the defense minister if the deployment proceeds without parliamentary consent, The Korea Times reports.

The proposed mission reportedly includes sending intelligence officers and North Korean defectors to Ukraine to analyze the tactics of North Korean troops supporting Russia. This group would assist Ukraine by studying the strategies employed by North Korean soldiers involved in the conflict.

DPK representative Kim Byung-ju argued that deploying any personnel abroad could be seen as equivalent to dispatching armed forces, citing Article 60 of South Korea’s Constitution, which grants the National Assembly authority over overseas deployments of military forces. β€œSending even one person abroad is tantamount to sending armed forces,” he stated, adding that the DPK would take action, including defense minister impeachment, if the government bypasses parliament on this issue.

Kim accused the administration of attempting to sidestep constitutional requirements by labeling the mission as a β€œmonitoring group” or β€œobservers.” He expressed concern, calling the deployment an β€œextremely dangerous act” that could exacerbate North-South Korean tensions. Another DPK official, Lee Unju, criticized the potential involvement as reckless, asserting it goes against the will of most South Koreans and could endanger lives.

The South Korean government has yet to address the DPK’s objections.

πŸ”Ή The Ukrainian company Vinnytsia Bees has announced that its VB140 Flamingo unmanned wing-interceptor has successfully completed interagency testing. Andriy Oleksyuk, the company’s director, stated that this innovative device shows strong potential in defending Ukraine’s airspace by targeting enemy reconnaissance drones.

One of the VB140 Flamingo’s key accomplishments, according to its developers, is its effectiveness against Russian reconnaissance UAVs, such as the Orlan. These UAVs are frequently deployed for surveillance and artillery adjustment, so neutralizing them is critical for enhancing security and reducing the precision of enemy strikes.

During testing, the VB140 Flamingo demonstrated its capacity to accurately detect, pursue, and neutralize enemy UAVs, which the developers believe could significantly disrupt enemy reconnaissance efforts.

β€œThis drone is an important step forward in Ukraine’s technological capabilities. Its success in countering enemy surveillance drones can reduce the effectiveness of enemy reconnaissance and targeting, benefitting both civilians and soldiers,” emphasized the developers.

The VB140 Flamingo’s capabilities include:

β€’ Interception of enemy UAVs to safeguard positions and units, with high-precision sensors and advanced technology.
β€’ Operational altitude up to 4.5 km.
β€’ Range of up to 50 km.

With flexible settings, the VB140 can adapt to both day and night operations, and its high autonomy makes it indispensable for monitoring and intercepting aerial threats. β€œThis gives Ukrainian defenders the ability to respond quickly to any threat appearing over their position,” said Oleksyuk.

Following successful testing, the VB140 Flamingo is ready for large-scale deployment within Ukraine’s Armed Forces. In addition, Vinnytsia Bees revealed plans to develop a new drone designed specifically to intercept kamikaze drones like the Shahed. This project aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and protect critical infrastructure.

β€œEach of our new developments is not just a step forward; it’s a leap into the future. The next product won’t merely match the previous oneβ€”it will be a vital component in the defense of our skies!” said Oleksyuk.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡± Poland has initiated construction of the β€œEastern Shield” line of fortifications along its border with Russia. The project is aimed at bolstering security and deterring potential aggression from both Belarus and Russia. This defensive line will cover a 400-kilometer stretch of land, reinforcing Poland’s eastern frontier.

The β€œEastern Shield” fortifications, backed by a $2.5 billion investment, will feature an array of protective structures, including fortified barriers, fencing, and specially engineered forested areas that enhance natural obstacles. Additionally, terrain modifications will enhance the line’s defensive capabilities.

πŸ”Έ The Ukrainian army ranks 6th globally in terms of size, according to WELT. China holds the top spot, with Russia coming in at 5th place. This ranking reflects Ukraine’s significant mobilization and expansion of its military forces amidst ongoing conflict. (Photo 1)

πŸ”Ή The U.S. Department of Defense has announced a new $425 million aid package for Ukraine. The package includes ammunition, air defense missiles, and Stryker armored personnel carriers, among other support measures.
*
The U.S. has released a comprehensive list of weapons and equipment in its new $425 million aid package to Ukraine. This assistance includes:*

β€’ Ammunition for NASAMS and HIMARS systems
β€’ Stinger missiles
β€’ Counter-UAS equipment and ammunition
β€’ Air-to-ground ammunition
β€’ 155-mm and 105-mm artillery shells
β€’ TOW missiles (optically tracked, wire-guided)
β€’ Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems
β€’ Stryker armored personnel carriers
β€’ Small arms and ammunition
β€’ Medical equipment
β€’ Demolition equipment and ammunition
β€’ Spare parts, support equipment, services, training, and transportation

This package is intended to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities for defense and operational support on the battlefield.

πŸ”Έ The accumulation of North Korean soldiers on Russian territory has become increasingly visible, with camps identified through surveillance, according to Ukrainian sources. Ukraine has the capability to monitor these locations and could launch preemptive strikes if equipped with longer-range weapons. However, such action remains dependent on international partners.

β€œInstead of the necessary long-range support, America, Britain, and Germany are watching. Everyone is waiting for the North Korean forces to initiate attacks against Ukrainians,” the statement of President Zelenskyy reads.

For those globally committed to preventing the expansion of Russia’s war against Ukraineβ€”and averting its potential spread beyond Europeβ€”the appeal is clear: watching is not enough. β€œActions must align with the words on avoiding escalation,” the statement emphasizes, urging decisive steps to counter the conflict’s intensification.

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed disappointment over TΓΌrkiye’s continued support for Ukraine through military equipment supplies. He noted that Turkish weapons are actively used by Ukrainian forces, reportedly resulting in casualties among Russian soldiers and civilians.

Lavrov remarked that this cooperation β€œcan’t help but cause surprise,” especially given TΓΌrkiye’s simultaneous declarations of willingness to mediate peace between Ukraine and Russia.

πŸ”Ή On the night of November 2, Kyiv experienced an intense drone attack, resulting in damage to residential areas.

In the Sviatoshynskyi district, debris from a downed β€œShahed” drone ignited a fire in a high-rise building, injuring two residents. In the Solomyan district, wreckage fell onto the territory of another residential building, while in the Dniprovskyi district, debris hit a 9-story building, setting a balcony ablaze. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡΅πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί"Kim Jong Un gave instructions that we do not look back at anyone, to consistently and powerfully provide assistance to the Russian army and the Russian people in their holy war," said the Foreign Minister of DPRK during talks with Lavrov.

πŸ”Ή The Russian army has captured more territory over the past week than at any other time in 2024 within a similar period, according to Bloomberg Intelligence calculations.s.*_

Bloomberg also reports that this week, Russian forces took control of the city of Selydove, with their next targets likely being the cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.

Both cities are key logistical hubs for Ukraine’s defense in the Donetsk region. If these cities fall into Putin’s hands, it would mark another milestone on his path to capturing the entire industrial east of Ukraine.

❗️Russian forces targeted a police deployment site in central Kharkiv, reportedly using S-300 missiles

The attack resulted in the death of Colonel Andriy Matviienko and injuries to 26 police officers, some of whom are in critical condition. Additionally, four civilians sustained injuries ranging from mild to moderate.

Is it going to be 2016 all over again? If so, shit.

Early voting information says definitely don't give up hope at this point, and does seem to be worrying Trump's little friends a fair amount.

It seems possible that women may be going to swing the swing states. (In spite of the "married couple" polling booths in some bits of North Carolina meaning that abusive husbands can control their wives' votes when those are meant to happen on a secret ballot. And some abusive husbands directing their wives on how to vote on their mail-in ballots and then taking the extorted votes and posting them along with their own.)

Key Takeaways:

  • Patriarch Kirill, head of the Kremlin-controlled Russian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (ROC MP), highlighted ongoing social and ideological divides within Russian society while reiterating boilerplate justifications for the war in Ukraine during a speech on October 31.
  • Kirill also highlighted the growing trend of brutality and cruelty in the Russian military and attempted to excuse this trend as the emergence of a β€œneo-pagan” cult.
  • Russian authorities also continue to identify conflict between ethnic Russians and minority groups as a critical issue.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his North Korean counterpart Choe Son-hui in Moscow on November 1, securing strong affirmations of North Korea's support for Russia amid updated Western reports on the number of North Korean troops deployed to Russia.
  • North Korean troops are unlikely to present Russia with a long-term solution to its manpower concerns, despite Choe's comments about Pyongyang's indefinite commitment to Russia's war effort.
  • The US Department of Defense (DoD) announced a new tranche of military assistance valued at $425 million to Ukraine on November 1.
  • Russian federal censor Roskomnadzor failed to enforce its plan to deanonymize Russian social media accounts by its stated November 1 deadline.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced north of Sudzha.
  • Both Ukrainian and Russian forces recently advanced within central Vovchansk. Russian forces recently advanced northeast of Kupyansk and northwest of Kreminna.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) introduced a new system on November 1 allowing Russian veterans and their families to confirm their veteran statuses digitally.

Ukrainians in the US weigh in on upcoming Trump vs Harris election.

If Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’s campaign promises to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia would make her the obvious choice for Ukrainian Americans in the 2024 presidential elections, voters in the diaspora are anything but united in their choice for president.

Despite Republican candidate Donald Trump’s open hostility to aid for Ukraine and apparent close relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, some Ukrainian American voters feel he’s the one who could end the war swiftly.

In the run-up to the election, the Kyiv Independent asked Ukrainians in the U.S. who can and can’t vote about the outcome they’d most like to see.

That too is possible, though quite a lot of Ukrainians who spoke Russian before this lot kicked off now do not speak it – like Zelenskyy, who did speak Russian and no longer does. It may be that older people find it more difficult to change the language they use, all at once, and still speak Russian some of the tiime.

United24 Media:

πŸ”Ή British intelligence has highlighted several challenges that North Korean troops would likely face if deployed to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. According to the review, β€œoperational interoperability difficulties” are expected due to a lack of prior joint exercises between Russian and North Korean forces.

Key challenges for DPRK troops include operating unfamiliar Russian equipment, adapting to Russia’s command and control structures, and overcoming significant language barriers. These factors would likely complicate coordination and effectiveness in combat scenarios, presenting potential vulnerabilities in any North Korean-Russian collaboration on the battlefield.

πŸ”Έ In the last week of October 2024, Russia reportedly transferred over seven thousand North Korean soldiers from Primorsky Krai to areas near Ukraine, according to Ukrainian intelligence (HUR). The deployment was facilitated by at least 28 Russian military transport planes. These troops were armed with various infantry-style equipment, including 60mm mortars, AK-12 assault rifles, RPK/PKM machine guns, SVD/SVCH sniper rifles, Phoenix anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), and RPG-7 rocket launchers.

Additionally, they received night vision devices, thermal imagers, collimator sights, and binoculars to enhance their combat capabilities. The HUR noted that within the Russian occupation forces, these North Korean soldiers are referred to as β€œspecial Buryats.” This transfer signals increasing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and highlights Russia’s growing reliance on external support for its operations in Ukraine.

πŸͺ«Following the recent drone attacks on Kyiv on November 2, damage was reported to the energy infrastructure, leading to significant power outages. DTEK, the energy company, confirmed that energy workers began immediate repair efforts across the Kyiv region and the city.

A high-voltage transit line in the Kyiv region was damaged in the morning, resulting in a power outage in the capital, affecting parts of the Holosiivskyi district. Additionally, a separate incident impacted distribution networks in the Bucha district, causing further blackouts. Despite these challenges, DTEK has successfully restored power to affected homes.

πŸ”Ή European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that appeasing Vladimir Putin is futile, underscoring that unity and resolve are essential to achieving a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. Her comments came in response to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n’s recent visit to Moscow, which sparked criticism from key European figures, including NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, and European Council President Charles Michel.

OrbΓ‘n’s Moscow visit has raised concerns, as the Hungarian Prime Minister does not have the mandate to negotiate with Ukraine on behalf of the EU. European leaders stressed that any diplomatic efforts must align with EU policies and demonstrate a united front in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty.

πŸ”Έ The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene on November 18 to mark the 1,000th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Barbara Woodward, the UK’s permanent representative to the UN, announced that the session will focus on what she described as the β€œthree biggest conflicts in the world”: the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine, as well as the conflicts in the Middle East and Sudan.

πŸ”Ή Australia has supplied Ukraine with JDAM-ER (Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range) aerial bombs that were previously decommissioned by the Royal Australian Air Force. These munitions, once part of Australia’s F/A-18A/B Hornet fleet, were phased out in 2021. According to the Australian Defense Magazine, some of these bombs were later transferred to support Ukraine’s defense efforts. Details about the exact quantity and timing of the delivery, however, remain undisclosed.

πŸ”Έ The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, has authorized 60 Czech volunteers to join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as confirmed by his press secretary, Filip Platosh, to ČeskΓ½ rozhlas.

Under Czech law, citizens are generally prohibited from serving in foreign military or paramilitary groups without presidential permission. So far, 180 Czech citizens have officially applied for such authorization to support Ukraine. However, according to Platosh, some Czechs have reportedly traveled to defend Ukraine without waiting for formal approval.

πŸ”Ή 🀝 Belgian defense company Thales will collaborate with Ukraine to produce missiles aimed at countering enemy drones, as confirmed by Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries, German Smetanin. A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between Ukraine and Thales, marking a new step in defense partnership.

The collaboration is expected to grow over time, with plans to include the transfer of technologies and components necessary for missile production.

πŸ”Έ South Korea’s arms supplies to Ukraine may hinge on the deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, stated South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yol.

He emphasized that Seoul is closely monitoring the partnership between Russia and the DPRK, especially focusing on any military or strategic benefits North Korea might gain from Russia in return for its support in the war.

πŸ”Ή During recent attacks on Kyiv, Russian forces have adopted a tactic of flying attack drones at extremely low altitudes in an attempt to evade and probe air defense systems, according to Mykhailo Shamanov, spokesperson for the Kyiv City Military Administration. The drones, particularly Shaheds, enter Kyiv in coordinated groups, dispersing into single targets as they approach the city. Flying at low altitudes and in successive waves, they complicate air defense operations and create additional challenges for mobile response units.

The drones are also maneuvering in specific areas to attract the attention of mobile air defense groups, aiming to prompt movement and open corridors for subsequent drone waves. This tactic is designed to overwhelm and confuse air defenses, making it more difficult to intercept all incoming targets effectively.

πŸ”Έ Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that a just resolution of the war depends on preserving Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Speaking in an interview with Hurriyet, Fidan noted TΓΌrkiye’s unique position of maintaining close ties with both sides, stating, β€œWe do not hesitate to listen to both sides. However, reporting the bitter truth is another matter, and this is what we do.”

Fidan also highlighted a sense of war fatigue among both parties, suggesting this might lead to unexpected developments in 2025. TΓΌrkiye’s position underscores its role as a mediator while affirming Ukraine’s sovereignty as essential to any fair outcome.

πŸ”Ή Google recently updated its maps, accidentally displaying images of Ukrainian Armed Forces’ military locations. Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) reached out to Google to address the issue but initially received no response due to a company day off.

Following public concern, Google employees contacted the CCD, confirming they are working to resolve the issue. They also plan to discuss strategies for responding more quickly to similar situations in the future.

πŸ”Ή Russian drones attacked Kyiv overnight, with the air raid alarm lasting a total of five and a half hours.

Drone debris fell in the Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts of the city. Windows were shattered in five buildings, including dormitories of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations. Road surfaces, a lighting pole, and power grids were also damaged. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡© The second round of crucial presidential elections is underway in Moldova

In the first round, pro-European President Maia Sandu secured over 42% of the vote, while Alexandr Stoianoglo, nominated by the pro-Russian Socialist Party, garnered nearly 26%.

Stoianoglo positions himself between East and West, with rhetoric that contrasts with Sandu’s policies. Under Sandu’s leadership, Moldova cut ties with the Kremlin and supported Ukraine amid Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Sandu asserts that Stoianoglo is a Kremlin ally and warns that his victory could bring uncertainty and instability. Stoianoglo denies this, accusing Sandu of pursuing divisive policies in a country with a significant Russian-speaking population.

The outcome of this election will set the tone for next year’s parliamentary elections, where Sandu’s party will fight to retain its majority.

πŸ”Έ Zelensky: Russian forces deployed more than 900 bombs, around 30 missiles, and nearly 500 attack drones against various regions of Ukraine last week alone.
