Ukraine Invasion: Part 52

MissConductUS · 30/10/2024 21:41

in the case of missiles carried externally on aircraft they (and/or some of their components) can suffer quite a lot of wear and tear simply by being exposed to the airflow for hours on end…

Very interesting. Everyday is a school day on Mumsnet.

I guess that's an advantage for the fifth generation fighters that can carry at least some of their ordinance internally to reduce their radar signature.

Being able to carry some internally ought to make a big difference to wear and tear

Natsku · 31/10/2024 12:01

Completely irrelevant to the thread but I shared with you lot before that I was going to study aircraft maintenance because I felt I just wanted to be able to do something useful after Russia invaded and everything felt so scary for a while in Finland too. Well I just graduated today. Alas I can't work with military aircraft though because I'm British and apparently that's a problem, so my whole idea of doing something useful in a war effort sense hasn't come to fruition.

notimagain · 31/10/2024 12:06

Congrats on the graduation.

Sadly for some role/jobs the nationality issue can be a real blocker, almost regardless of where you actually call home and how long you have lived there.

Natsku · 31/10/2024 12:11

Worst thing is that I have Finnish nationality too, have done since birth, but its having the British nationality as well that causes the problem. I had hoped that things might change since joining NATO as Britain is officially an ally now but its not changed yet. Did get a job in the civilian side though, right next door to the military place I had hoped to work.

notimagain · 31/10/2024 12:28

I had hoped that things might change since joining NATO as Britain is officially an ally now but its not changed yet.

I’m afraid you might find there might not be a change - Unfortunately there’s often NATO “stuff” that can be shared and then there’s sometimes nationals only eyes and ears “stuff”…and without getting too detailed that can sometimes include matters of a technological/equipment nature, not just fancy intelligence stuff,

Way back I sat in on a few briefings in the UK where we got to a part where we had to ask our exchange officer colleagues from the likes of US and Germany to leave the room.

AI guided drones are starting to prove their worth in Ukraine. The article mentions that the USAF is looking into using the same software for AI piloted aircraft.

blueshoes · 31/10/2024 18:33

Oh @Natsku that is a blow. How amazing though that you put actions to words and actually got a qualification in aircraft maintenance. I am not worthy! I hope you are able to work in a civilian capacity so that you can keep your skills current even if the Finnish military does not trust a half-Brit. If truly a war did come (and hoping it does not), the requirements might relax and in any case, one civilian aviation engineer frees up another to serve in the military. Flowers🇫🇮🇺🇦

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/10/2024 18:39

I was just thinking that they need civilian aircraft maintenance, and now you are replacing someone who did that and can move next door to do military maintenance instead.

Natsku · 31/10/2024 19:04

My class has certainly produced several workers for the military side, remarkably good employment rate by graduation in my class, so that's something anyway.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 31/10/2024 22:42

United24 Media:

🇬🇧 British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves announced that the UK government will allocate £3 billion ($3.9 billion) annually to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes." In her inaugural budget speech, Reeves highlighted that this additional funding would allow Britain to reach a defense spending target of 2.5% of GDP, surpassing NATO's 2% requirement.

Reeves added that this military support pledge is in addition to a £2.26 billion ($2.93 billion) loan provided under the G7's emergency revenue-sharing agreement announced last week.

🇺🇸 Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin suggested that North Korea's potential involvement in Russia's war against Ukraine could lead to new forms of support for Ukraine, though he did not specify what these actions might entail. When asked if North Korea’s involvement could prompt Western countries to send troops to support Ukraine, Austin responded that it "might prompt others to take action, different kinds of action," but refrained from further speculation.

In discussions with South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Austin addressed the implications of this cooperation. Minister Kim noted that Russia could potentially provide North Korea with advanced technology in return for troop support. This could include technology related to tactical nuclear weapons and intelligence satellites, as well as upgrades to North Korea’s outdated military equipment.

Kim expressed concerns that such technological advancements could heighten security risks on the Korean Peninsula, complicating the security landscape in the region.

🇺🇦 President Zelenskyy expressed that the disclosure of Ukraine's request for missiles, detailed in a confidential annex of the Victory Plan, without the actual provision of such assistance, signals hesitancy among allies and a tendency to delay critical decisions.

🤡 Russia is expected to increase taxes to sustain its ongoing war efforts against Ukraine, according to Reuters. The 2025 draft budget allocates nearly a third of all spending—equivalent to 6.3% of GDP—towards military needs, marking the highest proportion of defense spending since the Cold War. This would mean defense expenses outstrip social spending by a factor of two for the first time. Rising interest rates have reached their peak since 2003, and the ruble has hit its lowest exchange rate against the dollar in a year.

To fund the war, Russian authorities have already started tax hikes, with an extensive tax reform planned to generate an additional 1.7% of GDP in revenue by 2025. However, economists caution that these measures may still fall short of covering the increased military expenditure.

🇭🇺 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is in talks with Hungary to remove obstacles to its NATO membership. Speaking during a visit to Uzhhorod, he noted that Ukraine is drafting a document aimed at establishing a shared stance on sensitive issues between the two nations, including matters related to the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

A specific provision addresses Hungary’s ongoing block on inviting Ukraine to join NATO.

“The least we ask of Hungary is not to block Ukraine’s invitation to NATO. That is, not to support or vote for us, but simply not to block it. This is important for us,” Zelenskyy stated.

🇺🇸 The Pentagon has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine. “This includes artillery, air defense systems, armored vehicles, ammunition, and other critical weapons,” stated Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, adding that further security assistance will be detailed in the coming days.

🤡 The upcoming comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Russia and Iran will formalize extensive cooperation in defense, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“The agreement is nearing signing and will establish both parties’ commitment to closer defense collaboration, aimed at promoting peace and security at regional and global levels,” Lavrov stated.

🇺🇸 According to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, there are now approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia, with about 8,000 stationed in the Kursk region. This assessment was shared after a meeting between U.S. and South Korean Defense and Foreign Affairs Ministers in Washington.

While the United States has not yet confirmed North Korean involvement in active combat, Blinken expects this could occur in the coming days. Reports indicate Russian forces are training North Korean troops in artillery use, anti-aircraft missile operation, and basic infantry tactics, signaling plans to deploy them on the front lines.

Blinken emphasized that if North Korean forces engage in hostilities or support operations against Ukraine, they would be treated as legitimate military targets. He described Russia’s outreach to North Korea as a “clear sign of weakness,” noting that Russian losses in eastern Ukraine have reached approximately 1,200 soldiers daily—the highest rate since the war began. This is the first instance in a century of Russia relying on foreign military support.

🇨🇦 Canada is actively working to persuade international partners to allow Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on Russian territory, as part of Ukraine's self-defense efforts. Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated, "We approve of Ukraine's use of long-range weapons against targets on Russian territory since Ukraine needs this for self-defense. We are also trying to convince other countries to accept this position."

The United States, however, maintains a stance against authorizing long-range strikes on Russian territory, although it acknowledges Ukraine’s right to strike using its own weapons.

The main objective is to prevent sanctions evasion. Switzerland has implemented sanctions that ban investments in Belarus’s energy sector and include import and export restrictions.

The country also declined to adopt precautionary measures aimed at preventing the re-export of military-related goods to Belarus.

🇺🇦🇰🇷Ukraine will officially approach South Korea with a request for military assistance, President Zelensky stated.

“Our request will be very detailed. It will be accompanied by my representative, who will soon travel to South Korea. And we will talk about weapons. I don’t know how South Korea will respond, but we would very much appreciate their help — with artillery, air defense, and some other unofficial but crucial items,” the president said in an interview with South Korean channel KBS.

⚡️8,000 North Korean troopss* have been deployed to Kursk Oblast, Blinken says.

There have been no clashes between the North Korean and Ukrainian military so far, Antony Blinken said, adding that they can happen "in the coming days."

"One of the reasons that Russia is turning to these North Korean troops is that it's desperate. (Vladimir) Putin has been throwing more and more Russians into a meat grinder of his own making in Ukraine. Now he's turning to North Korean troops, and that is a clear sign of weakness," he said.

🔸 Russia's next mass missile attack on Kyiv likely imminentt*, experts and weary residents say
