Me neither sadly @DrBlackbird and especially a woman of colour! Here's hoping we're wrong!

I honestly don't think that there are vast numbers of men who are opposed to voting for Harris purely because she is a woman or because of her racial background. I also believe that whatever bias exists is already reflected in the polls.

I do actually tend to agree and I wonder if there are some 'macho' men (i.e. toxic males) who will proclaim that they won't possibly vote for a women but that will actually do so in the privacy of the booth.

DrBlackbird · 29/10/2024 13:42

It’s true that Hillary won the popular vote in 2016, so I’ll amend my comment that I don’t think enough voters in the swing states will vote for a woman Democratic presidential candidate. I’m really hoping I’m wrong. We’ll find out soon enough.

With what is playing out in so many countries ie massive election interference, outright election rigging, highly refined propaganda campaigns based on ever granular data, being led by amoral dictators, and the rise in populism, it’s hard not to feel democracy as a societal principle and as a value is under attack.

Zelenskyy emphasized that dictatorships first target societal principles through propaganda and repression, undermining people’s ability to defend their beliefs. He pointed out that dictators like Putin export this lack of principles, creating β€œgray zones” of instability and a disregard for values.

I was watching the protests in Georgia last night and felt so sad for the young people there who must just see their future ebbing away.

Surely most toxic males would be voting for Trump anyway. Those are the ones with stickers all over their wankpanzer pickup trucks.

This is my thinking too. The tiny number of undecided voters are v unlikely to be members of the He Man Woman Haters club.

On an unrelated issue, we're a bit skin on air defense missiles at the moment, in part due to demand in the Middle East.

πŸ”Ή Zelensky expressed hope that Trump, if he wins the U.S. presidential election, will continue supporting Ukraine, as he would not want to lose to Putin.
When asked about the potential risk of losing U.S. support if Trump is elected, Zelensky responded: β€œTrump says a lot, but I haven’t heard him say he would cut support for Ukraine.”

@MissConductUS what do you think of this? But he will force Ukraine to give up their territory, won't he?

No one knows what he would do. He could tell Putin that he's going to give Ukraine anything they want. He could tell Ukraine that he's going to cut off all aid. He could do both of these things at the same time.

Ukraine should plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Key Takeaways:

  • The rate of Russian advances in Ukraine has increased in recent weeks but remains slow and consistent with positional warfare rather than with rapid mechanized maneuverβ€”emphasizing how generally stagnant Russian advances have been after over two and half years of war.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin attempted to use an annual Russian nuclear deterrence exercise to further boilerplate nuclear saber-rattling information operations that aim to influence Western decision making.
  • Recent Russian polling suggests that Russian domestic support for local government entities has somewhat declined over the past year, most likely in response to increased crypto-mobilization force generation efforts at the regional level.
  • Russian officials and milbloggers are conducting information operations that falsely portray the Georgian opposition's peaceful and legal challenges to the conduct of the October 26 parliamentary election results as a Western- and Ukrainian-sponsored illegal coup d'Γ©tat.
  • The Georgian protests have been peaceful and legal - far from the Russian claims of an illegal coup.
  • These concerted Russian efforts to baselessly discredit the Georgian pro-Western opposition and civil society are part of a common Kremlin tactic aimed at framing the valid and legal concerns of pro-Western political entities in the post-Soviet space as illegitimate and violent.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Toretsk, and Russian forces made advanced near Kupyansk, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and southwest of Donetsk City.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) continues to rely on Russia's prison population to replace depleted Russian units on the frontline.

Ukraine facing 'grim' situation in Donetsk Oblast, as Russia claims capture of Selydove

"The last week has been extremely difficult for the Ukrainians β€” the Russians were able to breach the Ukrainian defenses in various areas," Emil Kastehelmi, an analyst at the Finland-based Black Bird Group, told the Kyiv Independent.

Russia's long and grinding campaign in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region has dramatically gained pace in recent days, with Kastehelmi saying Moscow's forces have advanced "faster than it has been any time after the summer of 2022."

Who is Sergei Kiriyenko, Russian hawk reportedly in touch with Elon Musk?

Late last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Elon Musk, the U.S.-based oligarch with extensive influence on American politics, had been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin since late 2022. The revelation came weeks after reports that similar calls were potentially made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, the current Republican Party nominee who is heavily backed by Musk.

However, they also mentioned several Russian characters that slipped from the public eye. One of Musk’s alleged points of contact was a less-known Russian official, Sergei Kiriyenko, according to the WSJ.

πŸ”Ή Croatia has announced it will supply Ukraine with 30 M-84 tanks and 30 M-80 infantry fighting vehicles, along with spare parts and ammunition from its stockpiles. In exchange, Croatia will procure 50 new Leopard 2A8 tanks from Germany at a reduced price, as confirmed by the Croatian Ministry of Defense.

The agreement was formalized during a meeting in Berlin between Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anuőić and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, where both ministers signed a Letter of Intent. Under this arrangement, the financial support provided by Germany to Croatia for the initial equipment transfer to Ukraine will offset the total cost of Croatia's Leopard 2A8 acquisition.

"This agreement structure benefits all three involved nations β€” Croatia, Germany, and Ukraine β€” by supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression while enhancing Croatia’s military capabilities," Minister AnuΕ‘iΔ‡ stated. Further details will be shared upon contract signing.

πŸ”Έ The Pentagon and defense experts in the United States are increasingly concerned about a potential shortage of interceptor missiles critical for air defense systems. The Wall Street Journal reports that the wear and use of these missiles have accelerated, outpacing current production rates.

πŸ”Ή Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n, during a press conference in Tbilisi, praised Georgia's ruling party, Georgian Dream, and its government for what he called their choice to prioritize "peace" by preventing Georgia from becoming a "second Ukraine." OrbΓ‘n emphasized that, in his view, the Georgian government had wisely avoided involvement in the ongoing "senseless war" in Ukraine.

Orban further expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili's approach to European integration, suggesting that, by the end of the decade, Georgia would be prepared for EU membership "in its best form." This statement aligns with OrbΓ‘n's stance of fostering ties with Russia and his consistent advocacy for alternative foreign policy approaches within the EU.

πŸ”Έ Fines imposed by Russian courts on Google for blocking YouTube accounts have reached $20.88 trillion (2 undecillion rublesβ€”2 followed by 36 zeros). This amount doubles every week.

These fines were imposed after Google removed YouTube channels associated with Kremlin propaganda media.

πŸ”Ή Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held meetings in ReykjavΓk with the prime ministers of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

β€œThe main focus is on continued support for Ukraine, particularly in defense needs, financing of Ukrainian production, strengthening air defense, and enhancing our long-range capabilities. Additionally, we discussed implementing points of the Victory Plan and preparing for the second Peace Summit,” Zelenskyy said.

πŸ”Έ Half of Russia’s Shells Come from North Korea, β€” The Times

According to The Times, which cites sources, Russia has become increasingly dependent on North Korean shells following Putin's visit to Pyongyang earlier this year. Western intelligence reports that many of these shells may be faulty, but their quantity has still contributed to some battlefield gains.

Meanwhile, the report notes that Russia continues to face heavy losses, with 1,200 personnel lost dailyβ€”480 of these in the battles for Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.

πŸ”Ή Explosive Contamination Affects 128,000 Square Kilometers of Land and 14,000 Square Kilometers of Waters in Ukraine, β€” Ministry of Defense

β€œThis contamination is a direct result of Russia's large-scale invasion, significantly impacting civilian safety, agriculture, industry, and socio-economic growth in affected regions,” the report states.

According to Ruslan Beregulya, head of the Main Directorate for Mine Action, these risks impact the lives of over 6 million Ukrainians.

πŸ”Έ A South Korean intelligence report reveals that most North Korean soldiers sent to fight in Ukraine are in their 20s. Despite their youth, they should not be underestimated, as all have received at least basic military training.

πŸ”Ή The Ukrainian military has received 65 ambulances from NATO as part of the Alliance’s commitment to provide long-term security assistance, established at the 2024 Washington Summit. These ambulances will enhance Ukraine’s medical response capabilities on the front lines.

πŸ”Έ U.S. President Joe Biden stated that Ukraine should retaliate if North Korean troops enter its territory, Reuters reports. β€œI am concerned about the presence of North Korean troops in the Kursk region in Russia,” Biden commented, acknowledging reports of North Korean forces stationed in that area. When asked if Ukraine should respond if these troops cross the border, he affirmed, β€œIf they cross the Ukrainian border, yes.”

πŸ”Ή The United States is set to transfer 2,000 Humvee armored vehicles to Ukraine, as reported by Forbes. Amid heavy fighting, Ukraine has recently suffered substantial vehicle losses, with OSINT analysts confirming over 220 vehicles lost in October and nearly 2,000 since the year’s start. These figures represent only visually confirmed losses, meaning actual numbers are likely higher.

With a need for replacements, the US is well-positioned to meet Ukraine’s demand, as 60,000 Humvees are currently being phased out. These vehicles, recently decommissioned, are not only combat-ready but also less costly than modern systems, allowing the US to supply Ukraine without exceeding budget constraints.

The Humvee’s familiar design ensures quick integration into Ukrainian forces. With over 3,000 Humvees received early in the war, Ukrainian soldiers are already proficient with the vehicle, which is praised for its functionality. Its size and maneuverability make it especially useful for Ukraine’s defense strategy, particularly in urban combat where it can navigate narrow streets more effectively than larger tanks and artillery.

πŸ”Ή NYT: In a classified section of the β€œVictory Plan,” Volodymyr Zelensky has requesteded_ 2,500 km-range Tomahawk missiles from the United States.*

According to an unnamed senior U.S. official who spoke to the publication, this request is part of Ukraine’s proposal for a β€œnon-nuclear deterrence package,” yet he described it as an unfeasible demand.

The article mentions that some U.S. officials are expressing dissatisfaction with the plan, viewing it as unrealistic and overly reliant on Western support. Meanwhile, it also notes a growing sentiment among Ukrainians of frustration over the perceived insufficiency of Western aid.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡΄πŸ‡·πŸ‡΄ Norway has allocated 120 million euros for the purchase of a new Patriot air defense system for Romania, replacing the one recently transferred to Ukraine, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr StΓΈre announced.

πŸ”Έ The Defense Forces plan to draft an additional 160,000 people, announced NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Lytvynenko during his address to the Verkhovna Rada

According to Lytvynenko, 1.05 million citizens have already been drafted into Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

β€œAn additional 160,000 are planned to be drafted. This will bring the staffing of military units to 85%,” Lytvynenko stated.

🀑A monument to the β€œNATO soldier” has appeared in Russia.

On October 22, in the village of Silikatny, Ulyanovsk region, a monument was unveiled β€œto Russian combat veterans, participants in local wars and armed conflicts.”

However, local residents noticed that the engraving actually depicts a soldier equipped with American weapons and wearing NATO-style gear. (Photo 1)

πŸ”Έ A woman has been sentenced to ten years in prison for passing information to the Russians about the location of Ukrainian military forces and directing Russian strikes on the Kharkiv region

The convicted woman did not connect with Russian intelligence by chance; she frequently traveled to Moscow and Belgorod and openly expressed pro-Russian views. She worked at a Kharkiv energy company, where she also provided information to the Russians, enabling the Russian military to target the facility.

πŸ”Ή πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί Andrius Kubilius, nominated for the position of EU Defense Commissioner, believes that Europe must be prepared for any military aggression β€” a task he intends to prioritize in his new role.

πŸ”Έ "It's hard to say. Bombs hit Russians too." - Yulia Navalnaya on whether to supply weapons to Ukraine

During the interview, she also said that this is only "Putin's war."

However, when she was reminded that it is ordinary Russian soldiers who kill Ukrainians every day, she replied: "Of course, people are fighting. But this is his war."

In a commentary for BILD, Roderich Kiesewetter, a foreign policy expert at the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), said that Navalnaya "has no sympathy" for the Ukrainians being killed by Russia.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡΅A small contingent of North Korean troops is already in Ukraine, and Western officials expect their numbers to grow as they complete training in eastern Russia, according to CNN, citing two unnamed Western intelligence sources. The U.S., however, has yet to officially confirm the presence of North Korean military personnel in Ukraine

It is currently unclear what specific role the North Korean troops will play, though Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder suggested they might be used as infantry by the Russians. Opinions within intelligence circles are divided: some suggest that the newly arrived North Korean soldiers are primarily special forces, with Pyongyang reportedly viewing its troops as more trained and capable than regular Russian soldiers. Others speculate that the North Korean government sent its troops mainly to gain combat experience, as the North Korean army has not seen active combat in over 70 years.

Officials expect that at least some of the soldiers will abandon their units once they reach the battlefield, with the language barrier posing a significant obstacle for conducting operations alongside Russian forces. Meanwhile, U.S. officials are urging China to intervene and pressure North Korea to withdraw its forces. However, they are not hopeful, given that China remains a β€œkey factor” in Russia’s military efforts, continuing to supply dual-use goods that can be repurposed for weapon production.

πŸ”Ή Kyiv was attacked by drones once again, marking the 19th attack this month

Drone debris fell in the Solomyansky district, igniting a fire in a residential building. Nine people were injured, including a child, and 18 residents were evacuated from the building.

Additionally, a fire broke out in an administrative building, where a gas regulation unit was later depressurized. This issue has since been resolved.

πŸ‡°πŸ‡΅ North Korean soldiers have been stationed 50 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, reports FT

According to journalists, the North Koreans have been in Russia’s Kursk region since October 28. They belong to the elite 11th Army Corps of North Korea, known as the β€œStorm Corps.”

Ukrainian intelligence doubts the combat capabilities of these North Korean servicemen, as they have never left their country, have not participated in real battles, and lack experience in modern warfare involving drones. It is assumed that they may be used as infantry.

πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡°πŸ€―The Prime Minister of Slovakia (a NATO and EU member state) Robert Fico took part in the Russian propaganda TV program β€œ60 Minutes” and answered questions from top propagandist Olga Skabeeva

The comment about wear is very valid ..certainly in the case of missiles carried externally on aircraft they (and/or some of their components) can suffer quite a lot of wear and tear simply by being exposed to the airflow for hours on end…there will be similar problems I’m sure with ground based exposed to the elements, worse still those perhaps being moved around on mobile launchers..

Very interesting. Everyday is a school day on Mumsnet.

I guess that's an advantage for the fifth generation fighters that can carry at least some of their ordinance internally to reduce their radar signature.

United24 Media:

πŸ”Ή The United States is set to transfer 2,000 Humvee armored vehicles to Ukraine, as reported by Forbes.

Its size and maneuverability make it especially useful for Ukraine’s defense strategy, particularly in urban combat where it can navigate narrow streets more effectively than larger tanks and artillery.

πŸ”Έ In an interview with Skabeeva, Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed his intention to attend the celebrations in Moscow on May 9, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. He stated, "I will consider it an honor to come to Moscow to participate in the celebration... I feel that this is my personal duty."

Fico criticized Ukraine's victory plan, describing it as "about escalation, not about ending the war." He indicated his willingness to engage in dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin if necessary. On the topic of EU sanctions against Russia, he remarked that they are ineffective and acknowledged that the European Union is aware of this.

Additionally, he dismissed the theory that Ukrainian officers were responsible for the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines as "stupid."

πŸ”Ή Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the successful conclusion of the fourth Ukraine-Northern Europe summit, emphasizing the strong commitment of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden to bolstering Ukraine's defense. He highlighted key agreements reached during the summit:

Increased Defense Support: The Nordic countries pledged to provide additional air defense systems, including Patriot systems, and to expand defense production both within Ukraine and among allied nations.

Backing Ukraine’s Victory Plan: All Northern European partners endorsed Ukraine's Victory Plan, a strategic roadmap aiming to secure a just peace and counter Russian aggression.

NATO Membership Prospects: Zelenskyy underscored the strategic importance of inviting Ukraine into NATO, which he argued would reinforce the security of all NATO countries and curb Russia's imperialistic ambitions.

Enhanced Sanctions and Restrictions on Russia’s Shadow Fleet: There was a strong consensus on intensifying sanctions against Russia, particularly by targeting the shadow tanker fleet used to fund its military efforts. Zelenskyy called for broader EU and G7 support in neutralizing this fleet, framing it as a global security threat.

"This summit was a step forward in our collective determination to bring peace and stability to the region," Zelenskyy stated, underscoring that unity and resolve among allies are crucial to overcoming these shared challenges.

πŸ”Έ ❗️Finland has seized around 40 Russian state-owned properties valued at over 35 million euros, as reported by Yle, citing the Finnish Bailiff Service. This seizure prevents the sale or transfer of these assets, most of which are in Helsinki, with additional properties in Turku and other cities. Among the seized assets are the Russian Center of Science and Culture in Helsinki and the official residence of the Russian Consulate General in Turku.

The Finnish authorities’ actions are in response to an April 2023 ruling by the Arbitration Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. The tribunal ordered Russia to pay Naftogaz $5 billion as compensation for losses due to Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea. According to Naftogaz, if Russia does not comply voluntarily, the 1958 New York Convention allows for enforcement in countries where Russian assets are located.

This is reportedly the first instance of asset confiscation related to this ruling. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia intends to appeal the decision in court.

Consequently, South Korea feels a responsibility to closely analyze and monitor the movements and actions of North Korean soldiers in support of Ukraine.

πŸ”Έ The United States is imposing sanctions on approximately 400 individuals and companies for assisting Russia in evading restrictions imposed due to its war against Ukraine.

The sanctions target dozens of companies from various countries, including China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, TΓΌrkiye, and the UAE, that have imported critical microelectronics and aviation components into Russia. Russian companies acting as importers for these goods have also been included in the sanctions list.

Additionally, three subsidiaries of Rosatom, which develop digital technologies and software for the company’s operations, have been sanctioned. This move is part of the U.S. effort to tighten economic pressure on Russia amid ongoing conflicts.
