Just that, really.

The smell of sunscreen and the sound of Moroccan tea being poured (by tradition you pour it high so it makes a sound) remind me of mine.

Gingerbread biscuits and stew. Make me feel safe and happy every time.

Rokuandice · 09/10/2024 21:41

Nivea cream and pressed face powder remind me so much of my lovely Nan

EngineEngineNumber9 · 09/10/2024 21:43

Another Night by the Real McCoy for some reason.

Fish fingers and buttery mash is my ultimate childhood comfort meal.

The smell of sun tan lotion as I spent a lot of my childhood in a hot country.

Aparecium · 09/10/2024 21:53

Pure cotton being ironed. It smells quite different to poly-cotton mix, or even to easy-iron cotton. Sends me straight back to childhood ☺️

4 of us wore cotton shirts and ties to school or work, a fresh shirt every day, plus all the cotton bedding, so there was a massive amount of ironing every week. No wonder DM taught me to iron as soon as I was tall enough!

What a lovely DM you seem to have!

From family holidays in the South of France - melons and mint. Also citronelle to ward off the mosquitoes.
My grandfather's pipe. (Can't stand smoking generally)
The sound of crickets

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 09/10/2024 22:05

The smell of Oil of Ulay when I would kiss my mum goodbye in the morning. It's the reason that I use that moisturiser now.

angelcake20 · 09/10/2024 22:05

Polos as my Grandad always ate them.

helly29 · 09/10/2024 22:07

Tomato leaves - instantly back in my grandpa's greenhouse

Nivea suncream - straight back to childhood holidays

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/10/2024 22:09

Pears soap - it’s what my grandmother used, and it always reminds me of her.

And the smell of tomatoes as you pick them (or the ones you can buy on the vine) - that green/tomato-y smell makes me think of dad’s greenhouse, and going to pick fresh tomatoes for dinner.

NannyR · 09/10/2024 22:10

The smell of a tissue from my mum's handbag - a sort of mix of perfume, hand cream and mints.
The smell of my primary school lunchbox - a jam sandwich and an apple sealed up in a plastic box makes a very distinctive smell.

Notmynamerightnow · 09/10/2024 22:18

The smell uncream reminds me of the drought in 76 (I think it was 76). The smell of the school soap and paper towels takes me right back to primary school.
The song Save All Your Kisses for me brings back listening to Junior Choice on the radio with my Mum.

Just found out about Save All Your Kisses From Me thanks to you. What a sweet song! Might play it for the kids in the car now!

Cigarette smoke! My family didn’t smoke and didn’t like smoking, but on a nice day we’d sit outside the pub (kids weren’t allowed inside in those days) and people around would be smoking. It’s actually rare to smell cigarette smoke nowadays.

Also my Grandad’s pipe tobacco.

On a more wholesome note - cut grass. And autumn leaves and conkers have a certain smell.

And community centre floor polish. I used to go to ballet in our local one nearly 50 years ago. If I go to any of the community centres in my old town they all have that same smell still.

ChanelBoucle · 09/10/2024 22:42

Creosote. Reminds me of the smell of the fence in the back garden of our old house. It takes me right back to being 4 years old again.

Caffeineismydrug35 · 09/10/2024 22:47

The smell of freshly baked hot cross buns at Easter. No matter what was going on in the world, that remained a constant.

connie26 · 09/10/2024 22:55

I was trying to remember the smell of a traditional sweet shop the other day from the 70s. Also, the local library had a nice unique smell back then. I can remember sniffing my dad's ashtray. Ooh, one smell which I often reminisce about is leaning over the toaster whist it's on - flashbacks to my mum's kitchen.

Fuckmyliferightnow · 09/10/2024 22:57

Satsumas. It takes me back to my Nan's at Christmas time Smile

Apolitia · 09/10/2024 23:01

I’m reading this and worrying my kids won’t have any of these memories! Maybe music. No home baked hot cross buns or 4* ironed shirts here. Gah. They might remember the smell of the dog but not in a good way 😂

For me, it’s the smell of lenor which hasn’t changed in decades, beef stew and real old fashioned Christmas trees. They don’t smell the same now.

MonsteraMama · 09/10/2024 23:02

Songs: The Noddy theme tune and the Silver Brumby theme tune because I used to watch them obsessively. Björk's album Post because my mam had it on vinyl and I used to dance around the living room too it. Ditto "the greatest rock album in the world ever" specifically Crazy, Crazy Nights by Kiss and We Will Rock You by Queen.

Smells... Scotch pancakes cooking. My dad used to make mean scotch pancakes and the smell of them being fried in the morning for breakfast made me so happy.

Flidina · 09/10/2024 23:03

The smell of homemade lentil soup and fairy soap powder reminded me od my Nannas house, also lifebouy soap and Vim bleach powder.

grannypants22 · 09/10/2024 23:07

The Heartbeat theme tune.
Wood pigeons, used to always hear them outside my grandmas house.

Mine too!

Oil of Ulay and toothpaste, as she leaned in to tuck me in and give me a goodnight kiss at bedtime.

Save all your kisses for me was mine and my Dads song, reminds me of being little and him singing it to me.
