Hurricane Milton

Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Florida has had 90 tornado warnings in a single day... Milton has doubled its geographic size in 24 hours. They are expecting winds of up to 208 km/h when it reaches the coast...

I sincerely hope nobody in its path has stayed at home.

Well, at least that is better than the 289 km/h it was at it's strongest!

Yes, I had to use a converter. The strongest Milton reached was, in mph, 180.

I think I saw an alligator swim down the street on one feed.

i saw that too!

Very surreal to think not only have you got the threat of storm but also that of the wildlife.

KenAdams · 10/10/2024 00:08

My friend is at home. They are in the path but not in an evacuation zone. The path is basically across the most populated areas of Florida. You wouldn't be able to evacuate that many people.

I think you know what I meant. We're not all meteorologists on this thread.

Choux · 10/10/2024 00:22

Does anyone know where the most recent path detail is? Something more recent than the last National Hurricane Advisory? I keep seeing people on Twitter talk about wobbles in the path so want to know where it is now expected to go.

My brother and family live on a barrier island south of St Pete and in Advisory 19 were only 10-15 miles south of the eye's predicted path. (They are not there now but am worried for their house)

Choux · 10/10/2024 00:23

Typo - their house is 10-15 miles NORTH of the last predicted path I saw.

Windy app is pretty up to date tracking wise.

Well, they used to only be named after women. At least now they alternate.

It can be a bit troublesome though. I have a good friend named Katrina. She used to love it, not so much anymore.

I have a very active grandson called Harvey and a few years ago there was a hurricane Harvey

Choux · 10/10/2024 00:38

From Sky:
The eye wall of Hurricane Milton has begun to move onshore near Tampa and St Petersburg, the National Hurricane Center says.
There is an "extreme wind warning" for the area, meaning an eye wall is approaching.
But landfall isn't officially declared until half of the hurricane's eye makes land.

MynameisJune · 09/10/2024 20:48

It’s already down to a 3 and it hasn’t made landfall yet. It’s bad but no where near as bad as predicted/expected and I think social media has a lot to answer for in the scare mongering of ‘cat 6’ storm.

Ian in 2022 brought 15ft storm surges. I’m not saying it will be pretty but it’s not going to be a once in a century event from what it’s looking like now.

I haven't seen any of this. According to USA news it's expected to be a 2 when it hits - and there will be huge flooding - that's still on track to happen

my best wishes going out to those trying to shelter. I live in a hurricane area, The Dominican Republic. We were spared alot this year..a few passing tropical storms, but here they are even deadly as alot of the island (esp haiti) live in poverty and are in basic tin shacks. I am watching tonight and putting all my good wishes out to the universe to keep people safe. As for the poster upset about her holiday...get the fuck over yourself. Holidays are not real life. The people there that are in danger are far more important than your "crying" offspring. for gods sake teach them some empathy. You can rearrange your holiday alot easier than they can deal with what is happening to them and their property right now.

I still find it odd that there has been so little coverage of Helene just over a week ago. Comparing the coverage of Helene to the current coverage of Milton is quite odd.
The damage done by Helene is horrendous. There is still over 1000 people missing. Helene quite probably has a bigger fatality rate than Katrina did.
This may well end up being the worst hurricane season on record when looking at the number of fatalities.

Exactly. It's almost as if we are supposed to forget that last week happened while we worry about this week. The area around Asheville has been completely decimated. Almost 300 people over 5 states are dead, with the highest amounts in NC. The 1000 missing has been debunked but this is still an insane amount of unexpected death that just isn't getting as much media interest as one would expect.

GingerMaineCoon · 10/10/2024 01:44

PuddlesPityParty · 09/10/2024 19:03

It’s awful. And 1000s still missing from Helene ☹️😔

No.... Around 300 are still missing. Where did you get 1000s from?

Choux · 10/10/2024 01:46

From CNN
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a Category 3 storm with 120 mph sustained winds and higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Obviously I feel for the people there. That should go without saying!

This is a huge situation that is affecting people in many different ways.

We are all entitled to feel what we feel and I will not be shamed for being concerned about my holiday. If it was your holiday, you would be too, as much as you may pretend you wouldn't be!!

Such virtue signalling... and policing of what is deemed an acceptable concern, get over yourselves!!

So it's ok to worry for the 'kitties' of Florida but not be concerned for a very expensive and much looked forward to family holiday.

And to the poster that said at least we won't get school fines, you don't get fined in our school, it's independent so school fines were never a consideration thank you!

I am worried about my son who is sheltered in place with sand bags all around his house because there is nowhere to go. Not everyone is in an evacuation zone but that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous. Currently there are massive tornados ripping apart the state and the extensive flooding has started. One just hit a mile from his house! Last hurricane there were alligators swimming on his patio at his back door.

We are speaking with him now while we can and already all around him is flooding (he is in Orlando.) The storm is now hitting land and intensifying and soon the power and cell towers will go out and we will have no idea if he is okay after tonight because there will be no way to reach him for maybe days. Thousands will probably die and thousands of other will lose their homes. But yeah, your holiday, let's all bow our heads in sadness for you 🙄

Seriously, just stop posting on here, it is just awful of you to be so self absorbed and tone deaf. We have loved ones who could die and you are moaning about a vacation. Your lack of empathy for others is truly amazing. Shame on you.

WHAT????

Emptyspiral · 10/10/2024 02:22

Scorchio84 · 10/10/2024 02:19

WHAT????

There are alligators in virtually every body of water in Florida, even in the ditches on the side of the road. They normally leave people alone but in times of flooding they will be everywhere. My son had a few swimming around on his patio the last hurricane and it flooded. It is pretty normal there as weird as it sounds. Floridians are used to gater life.

Sparklfairy · 10/10/2024 02:36

CatamaranViper · 09/10/2024 10:33

Has anyone seen the tiktoks from OurSimpleHomestead? The couple who are not evacuating because they are trying to protect their farm animals? Heartbreaking

I have. It's so sad.

I'm astonished how many tiktok lives are going on right now as it makes landfall. No judgement on them not evacuating but some are going right outside or sitting in stupid places for a decent view of the action, trying to make money from 'gifts' instead of making sure they're safe. It's not going to end well.

One idiotic man had to actually be told in the comments to get out of the flood water before he got electrocuted, because he wanted to get closer to powerlines exploding? I mean wtf. Then he was laughing like 'oh you guyyyssss thanks for telling me to stay out of the water' Hmm

Scorchio84 · 10/10/2024 02:37

@Emptyspiral I cannot believe this! Floridians are hardcore!

ViciousCurrentBun · 10/10/2024 02:49

Tornadoes now with confirmed deaths in a place called St Lucie Co. I’m watching Fox Weather on you tube live. So even though my friend was not in the absolute worse place this is a further worry. I feel bad for anyone there but having someone you care about there I’m finding it very difficult.
