Hurricane Milton

Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

Agreed.

Similarly I keep getting videos flash up on my Facebook of "influencers" sharing all the shite they are buying to get ready for the hurricane. Not useful things and food etc but total random tat.

People seem oblivious to how over consumption is a huge part of what is fuelling climate change. And it's so easily avoided.

Our family mainly buy second hand and antique stuff... Much better quality {electronics apart of course}

Latest purchase made 1860 -still fully functional. 164 yrs old.

Plastics and ''tat'' is just going to end up in landfill.

What is worrying is 'built in obscolescence'

Family's old European washing machine lasted 17 years.

You don't get that nowadays with tat made in China.

Well if it said it on tiktok it must be right!

What a horrible thing to repeat. You do realise that it's not actually possible for the entire state (or even 'only' those with the an evacuation order) to leave their homes? Where do you think they would go? And how the hell do you think they would get there?

The roads to to the North of Tampa are currently at a total standstill and there's no fuel. Family that live there have decided to stay which is worrying, but they would rather see out the hurricane in their house/shelter than stuck on the highway with no fuel.

But it is correct, thought I believe it was originally for Hurican Helene.
I saw it on the news broadcast over there, they asked people to write their name and social security numbers somewhere on themselves if they chose not to evacuate so they can be identified.

No one was questioning whether people can evacuate or not, people have different circumstances. But it's bit harsh to call someone out for confirming what they have heard the Florida governors say on the news. Last nights news reports were even more dire.

sharpclawedkitten · 09/10/2024 10:23

Why do people keep saying it isn't getting coverage? It's first item on the BBC website and it was yesterday as well, and it was the first item after the 7am news bulletin on Radio 4. That's just the BBC alone.

How much more coverage do you want in the UK?

When people posted that it wasn't getting a lot of coverage and it was on the back of very little coverage of Helene. That has rapidly changed in the last 24 hours and it is now major news

knitnerd90 · 09/10/2024 10:28

I will say that there's absolutely an issue with continuing to build in some of these really vulnerable areas. The problem is that no one wants to buy residents out. And people don't want to give up oceanfront property.

CatamaranViper · 09/10/2024 10:30

To anyone who is in Florida or has family members or friends over there, genuinely I am so sorry you're going through this.
I started reading about it yesterday and I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like.

I'm keeping a close eye on the news and keeping everything crossed that it loses power before it hits.

@marmadukedoggo, Mar-a-Lago is on Palm Beach, South Ocean Boulevard. At the moment it doesn't look as though it is in the path.. but who knows? 🙈
Last time I book a family holiday to Florida, turning out to be a complete disaster

My heart bleeds for you. Truly. It does.

CatamaranViper · 09/10/2024 10:33

Has anyone seen the tiktoks from OurSimpleHomestead? The couple who are not evacuating because they are trying to protect their farm animals? Heartbreaking

HappierTimesAhead · 09/10/2024 10:35

"There is a a swamp in the backyard of Steve's house, which sits on a slant. He says he's had to use plastic sheets and sandbags to stop water entering his garage.
"If that doesn’t hold up and the storm decides to shift again, if it does get through there’s big concerns for us because there’s alligators back there, if the water gets too high," he says."
From the BBC live reporting. This absolutely blows my mind 😒

I don't have 'Tiktok' but I'm watching USA news and it's true. They did it for Helene - link below

When I read that 6 million people were under evacuation orders, my first thought was "where do 6 million people go?". Thanks for explanations about the shelters etc.

Hope all her Floridan MNs are ok and those with relatives there.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 10:41

I can't find who asked about insurance, but insurance in Florida is horrifically expensive. $20k plus, and if a company won't insure you then the state acts as a last resort insurance

DoIWantTo · 09/10/2024 10:44

@borntobequiet you’ve linked an article stating they’re preparing recovery efforts for after the hurricane has passed, not evacuation efforts to save the people stranded there. Your article just highlights the fact that they’re doing fuck all to help save lives, which makes the US government barbaric and culpable for the loss of their citizens lives

OneRarelySeesABrazierTheseDays · 09/10/2024 10:49

Some typically British posts here; it should be on the news here because some British people may be there!!!!
Omg! The horror!

DoIWantTo · 09/10/2024 10:52

@OneRarelySeesABrazierTheseDays you've not read the thread that well then if you’ve missed the dozens and dozens of posts where people are so scared for the people living in the area and horrified at the lack of care for the people stranded there because they can’t afford to vacate.

Agree

nosmartphone · 09/10/2024 10:58

Genuine question. If I were on holiday and starting seeing the news 3 days ago, I'd have been on a plane out of there asap. Why on earth have people on holiday stayed? I honestly think people don't see the real danger here.

I can understand residents may be genuinely hoping it gets downgraded or swings past missing them, but you're on holiday. Pack your suitcase and go - surely? Go anywhere! Get a motel.

Peridot1 · 09/10/2024 10:59

@ViciousCurrentBun - I remember that storm in Hungary in 2006. We were living there then and had almost decided to go into town to watch the fireworks. Friends had gone to some hills outside town to watch from there and were caught in it with their five year old. Thankfully they were fine but they said it was terrifying.

Because they're after attention ("maybe we'll get on the news!"), because they're ignorant and think it's fine, because they don't care about the rescuers who will be putting their lives at risk to save them when it all goes wrong

EasternStandard · 09/10/2024 11:03

I hope people in the mandatory evacuation area are out already

I was listening to a man say he was concerned about getting stuck in a car as traffic is so bad and some are running out of fuel, so he wasn’t leaving

I assume he was in the voluntary section, I hope so anyway

HappierTimesAhead · 09/10/2024 11:06

I imagine there wasn't a huge amount of flights left to get out and the ones that were left were extortionate.

Also, people on holiday often expect travel providers to do the decision making and planning for them (rightly or wrongly).

Dinoswearunderpants · 09/10/2024 11:08

We were in Orlando two weeks ago when Helena hit. Luckily we were unaffected at Disney but only down the road, there's so much destruction.

I truly feel for these people. Some of them have no choice but to stay. They say to leave but where do you go? Most hotels/motels are booked up. If you have pets, you can't take them there. Plus it all costs money that some people simply do not have.

The US government are only giving $750 to help people yet they spend millions on wars each year. It awful.

$750 for immediate needs (food, clothes etc.). De Santis is ignoring calls from Biden and Harris regarding further aid.

Peridot1 · 09/10/2024 11:08

@itwasnevermine - I don’t think that’s necessarily the case that they want to be on tv or whatever. I’m sure quite a few people did leave. If they could get flights. If they could afford flights. The airlines ramp up prices in cases like this which is obviously disgusting but it happens.

It’s not always as easy as just getting on a flight.

And that’s going to be a massive global issue as more and more of the world becomes uninhabitable. There will be mass migration and fighting for resources. We need drastic action before we reach tipping points after which there is no return.

This kind of thing is only going to get worse.

I was reading somewhere that a flight out of the area (can't remember which airport) had gone from $200 to $800 in the space of a few hours. It could be that families holidaying over there couldn't afford to get a plane out of there.
