Hi,

So I have stupidly messed up with my car insurance. It's renewed and has been taken out of my bank in one go - £518. I have called them but they are not helpful and have explained that even if I cancel and refund, it could take up to 10 days!

This leaves me with £218 until next Thursday. I receive PIP as I am disabled and get this on Thursday 17th ( next week). This is £549. I also get about £150 from a sideline that I do - this will come in next Monday 14th. This means that I have a total of £917 to see me through until the 26th. I have 2 teen dc's a no partner. I will need to do at least 2 full food shops and also pay for fuel (35 per week). I am worrying that it's going to be very tight this month.

OP posts:

I have £325 until the 20th and I feel really rich this month….

OolongTeaDrinker · 07/10/2024 18:14

Is there a typo in your figures OP? over £900 is loads if all bills have come out. You could get Gousto boxes for the next 3 weeks and still have hundreds left over. How much do you usually spend on food shops and where do you shop?

BitOutOfPractice · 07/10/2024 18:17

I am a notorious fritterer and even I think that’s plenty!

I mean yeah, I easily could spend more than £900 in 3 weeks, but I wouldn’t need to 😁

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 07/10/2024 18:20

That’s literally loads 🙈. Is this real or designed to annoy people about PIP?

Exactly. I’d have to fritter consciously to spend that. My real frittering skill is the mindless kind though.

coffeesaveslives · 07/10/2024 18:26

You can't be serious 😂

ladyditaverner · 07/10/2024 18:31

I too feel this may not be in good faith I'm afraid as it's so ridiculous.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 07/10/2024 18:34

Lol, so many of these threads lately.

Howmanyusernames123 · 07/10/2024 18:35

a reaction to another thread where posters are saying 40k (net, as in after tax) salary is very tight and not enough to live on?

my entire budget for the month is £1000. Covers food, petrol, hobbies, anything other than bills and mortgage. And I manage fine.

JC03745 · 07/10/2024 18:36

I'm just here for the OP's update to explain what they really mean!

TheHighPriestess1 · 07/10/2024 18:38

I’ve less than £100 to last until 25/10!

Henleylady · 07/10/2024 18:41

Well my family pay loads in tax - so I would not be moaning on a thread about living off £900 for 19 days unless you have rent and bills to come out too. Is it that you need to have enough in hand for rent/ mortgage and bills on the 1st so can only actually spend x before then- the £900 is a red herring.

PaminaMozart · 07/10/2024 18:46

@cushioned1 - excellent user name..... very fitting!!

Are you the poster who buys duck breast ready meals because you can't be arsed bothered to cook?

What has your family’s tax burden got to do with it? Is it a dig at her getting PIP?
We pay highest rate tax, my disabled son also gets PIP.

FragileWookiee · 07/10/2024 18:52

Bloody hell. 🙄 I've 95quid to last till the 25th. And only meals planned up until next thursday. With 5 kids. You've 900quid! Think you on wind up

SabreIsMyFave · 07/10/2024 18:58

You have nearly a grand to last 19 days? And this is a problem? Are you having a giraffe? 😆

GiantPigeon · 07/10/2024 19:01

KaToby · 07/10/2024 17:34

I have £295 to last me until the 23rd and I’m not worried…
Thats fuel, 2 food shops for me and 3 kids, a couple of birthday presents and anything else that could come up! I never have £900 to last me a month after bills!

Yes same we never have £900 left... We do still have £500 left after most bills already went out on 1st and filled the car full with fuel today, so it's £200 left for remaining bills and 3 weeks family food shop max £100 per week so £300 groceries and that's us no luxuries and that's normal for us.

Have a very small emergency fund if something goes tits up and then it'll be credit card. I'm not trying to benefit bash but I don't understand how working families are worse off financially than benefits. We don't get anything except child benefit and are scraping by every month.

So if op has paid car insurance in full in error, does this mean she normally has close to £1500 sloshing about just for food and fuel in a typical month?

We really live frugally, can't save any money and our only luxury has been increasing our food budget to £100 per week just so we can buy things like meat and treats for kids like a pack of lidl ice cream cones. I know we could cut that back but it's literally the only place we "splurge".

I despair...

The OP gets PIP because being disabled is significantly more expensive than being not disabled. People can work full time and claim PIP. It’s not means tested.

Imbluedalale · 07/10/2024 19:05

So just checked my bank . I have £121.07 left to last me 2 weeks and need to do a food shop next week with that and also get taxis to my appointments which I have 3 of this week . Things are short this month it’s been my daughter’s birthday . I’ve just sent my daughter £80 for this weeks food shop and I spent £150 on taxis last week . I’d love to have £900 to last me!

sunbum · 07/10/2024 19:06

Dont you have an Overdraft if you do go over? Though as others have said, we're a family of 5 and I'd be absolutely fine with that at this point in the month. We'd use up pasta and rice etc from the cupboards and stop takeaways/going out until payday. Seems nornal to me.

Howmanysleepsnow · 07/10/2024 19:10

Family of 6 here, we manage with half that per month for food and fuel for twice as many people so I’m sure you’ll be fine

caringcarer · 07/10/2024 19:14

littlebirdieblu · 07/10/2024 17:28

This is such a strange post, over £900 and you only need to do some food shopping and fill up the car? How much do you eat??

I would have thought £900 for 3 weeks after mortgage/rent paid is plenty. If your DC have lunches at canteen they can make do with a packed lunch for a couple of weeks.

caringcarer · 07/10/2024 19:16

It must be a typo. Do you mean £90 OP?
