We've recently moved into a (dilapidated!) house and I need to take meter readings. Anyone have a clue??

Can someone help me read this meter?!

Wow! Haven't seen one of those in years!

Not 100% sure but I'm going for

3 3 2 7 7

Lifeasweknowitisrandom · 07/10/2024 12:26

33177

LIZS · 07/10/2024 12:32

SushiSheep · 07/10/2024 12:38

Oh shoot. Definitely a 1 there, and not a 2.

Ignore me!

You ignore the numbers on the red dial.

Dfg15 · 07/10/2024 12:39

The number that the needle has gone past is the number you use

twomanyfrogsinabox · 07/10/2024 12:40

33167.2 dials are in opposite directions on alternate dials. The 4th dial is between the 6 and the 7 (closer to 7) to me so is a six confirmed by the next dial being a high number, 7. The red dial is the decimal place that they probably don't want.

FacingTheWall · 07/10/2024 12:40

33177, ours is an old one like that. You use the number it’s gone past.

Edited

You have to pass the number for it to be that number.

Floralnomad · 07/10/2024 12:41

I have one of these and I always read the number it’s gone past so I would read that as 33167 .

It hasn't gone past the 2 so it's a 1

DogInATent · 07/10/2024 12:43

33177, ignore the red dial.
Slightly confusing as the dials alternate between CW and ACW.

Scissor · 07/10/2024 12:52

33167 , same meter as mine and my house is lovely.
Dials alternate.

I was wrong first reading,

It's easier to read these meters backwards - if the last digit is 7 the one before it must be almost up to the next number.

Exactly the 4th dial is past six and before 7 it's going anti-clockwise, it is between 6 and 7.

Yeah could be. I see it that it's on the 7 but it's pretty close so could be just before it.

Bjorkdidit · 07/10/2024 13:29
  1. For it to be 77 the last but one dial would need to be just before 8 not 7, due to the last digit being 7, indicating that the last but one digit is 70% of the way to the next number. Think about how analogue clocks work.
StainlessSeal · 07/10/2024 13:33

Amazing - thank you all so much!

Well having now Googled how to read an old fashioned electricity meter I'm revising my answer!.....

33167

The dials shown on the website were very similar to those here, but also had helpful arrows.

I'm amazed this meter is still in use, it must date back to the 1950s. The meter in my house is about ten years old, and I'm continually getting messages telling me that it must be replaced.

dementedpixie · 07/10/2024 14:21

I also think 33167. If the pointer is between numbers you record the lower number

Floralnomad · 07/10/2024 22:16

@AdaColeman our house was built in 1991/2 and we have that type of electricity meter

WomenInConstruction · 07/10/2024 22:19

Follow the numbers round from 0-9
So clockwise on some anti clockwise on the others...
You take the number it has gone past (not the number it is nearly at) as the reading.

Just confirming 33167.

I love reading these. I used to volunteer for an energy charity and got excited when someone contacted us for help reading one GrinBlush
